A case of severe human cytomegalovirus esophagitis after short-term corticosteroid therapy in a patient with no other apparent cause of immunodeficiency, such as human immunodeficiency virus infection, neoplasia or previous organ transplantation is described. The cytomegalovirus esophagus infection was successfully treated with Ganciclovir.
