AbstractThe development of type 1 diabetes is, in part, dictated by the failure of regulatory T cells to maintain peripheral tolerance. As such, therapies aimed at correcting the declining function of regulatory T cells have been the subject of intense investigation. In this review, we discuss the potential of regulatory T cells to suppress autoreactive responses and prevent type 1 diabetes induced by viral infection while maintaining protective antiviral immunity.
