- Hydrocodone vs Oxycodone and Postoperative Pain and Opioid Use in Joint Arthroplasty. [Randomized Controlled Trial]JAMA Netw Open. 2026 Jul 01; 9(7):e2623079.JN
- CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort study of CYP2D6 NMs undergoing joint arthroplasty, within multimodal analgesia, hydrocodone provided comparable pain control to oxycodone with significantly lower opioid exposure, supporting its use as a viable and possibly preferable analgesic option.

- Assessment of the acceptability of effervescent oxycodone/paracetamol in the management of moderate-to-severe pain: the FirAlgos study. [Journal Article]Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci. 2026 May; 30(5):181-191.ER
- CONCLUSIONS: In real-world clinical practice, the effervescent OXY/PAR formulation provided rapid, clinically meaningful, and sustained pain relief, with parallel improvements in functional outcomes and patient-perceived benefit. Its high acceptability supports its use in patients requiring flexible and easily administrable analgesic options for moderate-to-severe pain.

- Diagnosis of acetaminophen and codeine poisoning in a dog using earwax analysis by headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS/GC-MS). [Case Reports]
- Poisoning of companion animals resulting from exposure to analgesics intended for human use is a frequent and clinically relevant problem in veterinary practice, usually associated with administration without professional supervision. This can induce severe systemic toxicity. Diagnostic confirmation can be particularly challenging in cases presenting with nonspecific clinical signs or when conven…

- Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed): Acetaminophen [BOOK]Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed). National Library of Medicine (US): Bethesda (MD).BOOK
- Acetaminophen is a good choice for analgesia, and fever reduction in nursing mothers. Amounts in milk are much less than doses usually given to infants. Adverse effects in breastfed infants appear to be rare.
- Codeine-induced pancreatitis in a previously Cholecystectomized patient: double the trouble. [Case Reports]Oxf Med Case Reports. 2026 Mar; 2026(3):omag030.OM
- The causality between codeine and acute pancreatitis has not yet been fully deciphered in medical literature. Codeine-induced pancreatitis is a rare entity and the underlying mechanism of action mediated by codeine has not been completely elucidated. One plausible theory is that codeine increases the pressure of the sphincter of Oddi (SOD), which results in spasms and subsequently acute pancreati…

- Comparative analysis of analgesic mechanisms in craniotomy pediatric patients: a scoping review. [Review]
- Due to the invasive nature of craniotomy, effective postoperative pain management is essential in pediatric neurosurgical patients, yet standardized guidelines remain limited. This scoping review evaluated postoperative analgesic strategies in children undergoing craniotomy to identify effective approaches and assess opioid-sparing techniques. Twenty-four studies met inclusion criteria, including…

- Customized pharmacological approach to acute and post-operative dental pain control in Iran: guideline review and adaptation. [Journal Article]BMC Oral Health. 2026 Mar 14; 26(1).BO
- BACKGROUND: Formulating a tailored clinical practice guideline is imperative for each country, necessitated by the refined considerations of medication availability, accessibility, and affordability. Hence, in this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical practice guidelines regarding acute and postoperative dental pain and customize them in prescribing analgesics for Iranian general dentists.…

- Periconceptional Use of Analgesics and Severity of Structural Birth Defects. [Journal Article]Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2026 Jul; 120(1):114-121.CP
- Reports of associations between use of specific analgesic medications and specific structural birth defects are inconsistent and difficult to translate for clinical guidelines and informed decision-making. To overcome this challenge, this study examines associations between use of specific analgesics and severity of structural birth defects, using a novel approach based on survival rates. We reco…

- Analgesic efficacy and adverse effects of paracetamol-codeine combination in third molar surgery: a meta-analytic systematic review. [Systematic Review]Minerva Dent Oral Sci. 2026 Feb; 75(1):36-42.MD
- CONCLUSIONS: Paracetamol + codeine provides effective postoperative analgesia for third molar surgery, especially in patients contraindicated for NSAIDs. Clinicians should consider the increased risk of sedation and gastrointestinal symptoms when prescribing this combination, and educate patients accordingly.

- Opioid Prescribing Patterns of Board-Certified Emergency Physicians Compared With Other Physicians Practicing Emergency Medicine Among Medicare Part-D Beneficiaries Between 2018 and 2020 in the United States. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Board certification in EM was associated with lower opioid prescribing rates. The average TDS of opioids per Medicare beneficiary was lower for board-certified EM physicians compared to non-EM board-certified physicians staffing EDs between 2018 and 2020.

- Probable neuropsychiatric toxicity induced by dihydrocodeine in a peritoneal dialysis patient: a case report and literature review. [Case Reports]
- BACKGROUND: Dihydrocodeine is metabolized by the liver and subsequently excreted by the kidneys following oral administration. Consequently, individuals with renal impairment are susceptible to drug buildup, heightening the likelihood of harmful effects, including central nervous system depression and reversible delirium. - Effect of intraoperative autonomic neural blockade on early postoperative outcomes after laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a double-blind randomized controlled trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that ANB significantly reduces the analgesic requirements and autonomic symptoms after laparoscopic cholecystectomy, even when added to comprehensive multimodal care. These findings support its broader use in minimally invasive surgery (MIS), where autonomic afferent input predominates by targeting the appropriate pathways.

- Association between oxycodone-acetaminophen use and acute kidney injury in patients with lower extremity fractures: A retrospective cohort study. [Journal Article]
- Mortality rates in individuals suffering from acute kidney injury (AKI) are notably high. The association between the administration of oxycodone-acetaminophen and the onset of AKI remains elusive. We explored the connection between the use of oxycodone-acetaminophen and the development of AKI among hospitalized patients with fractures in the lower limbs. We employed the Critical Care Medical Inf…

- Use of Vital Records to Improve Identification of Suicide as Manner of Death for Opioid-Related Fatalities. [Journal Article]
- Background: Accurate classification of intentional death as suicide is essential to target prevention measures appropriately. Unfortunately, manner of death (MOD) for many opioid-related fatalities are unclassified in the United States, and in Maryland, as many as 82% of overdose deaths are classified as undetermined manner. Aims: For opioid-related fatalities in Maryland, leverage death certific…
