- A Problem-Solving Therapy With Apple Watch Support for College Students With Alcohol Use Disorder Symptoms: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: Our study findings indicate that the PST-APPLE intervention is feasible, acceptable, and hypothesis generating among college students with AUD. While findings are promising, this pilot study was not powered for definitive efficacy testing. A fully powered randomized controlled trial is needed to confirm these effects. Future studies could adapt PST-APPLE to other wrist-worn electronic devices/watches that capture physiological data (eg, Fitbit, Samsung Galaxy Watch) to increase reach and scalability, particularly among younger adults and digitally literate populations.

- Effectiveness of a nurse-led telephonic brief intervention to reduce risky alcohol use among women in primary care in Brazil: a randomized controlled trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: A nurse-delivered telephonic BI produced meaningful short- to medium-term reductions in risky and harmful alcohol use among women in the primary-care setting. The attenuation of effects beyond 6 months suggests that a single brief intervention may be insufficient to sustain behavioral change over the long term and supports the evaluation of booster sessions or other low-intensity follow-up strategies. As a low-cost and scalable approach that can be integrated into routine primary care, telephonic BI may expand access to alcohol-related preventive care for women, particularly in resource-constrained settings.

- Psychopathy Facets Differentially Predict Drug- and Alcohol-Related Problems Following Violent Injury. [Journal Article]
- Psychopathy is a multidimensional personality construct associated with substantial personal, familial, and societal burden. Among the various forms of psychopathology that co-occur with psychopathy, substance misuse represents one of its most prominent comorbidities. Despite growing interest in the psychopathy-substance misuse association, most facet-level studies have been cross-sectional or ha…

- Psychosocial health and hazardous alcohol use among 50- to 70-year-olds: A cross-sectional latent profile analysis in south-east Melbourne, Australia. [Journal Article]Addiction. 2026 Sep 23. [Online ahead of print]A
- CONCLUSIONS: Latent profiles of psychosocial health appear to be statistically significantly associated with differences in alcohol consumption among adults aged 50-70 years in Victoria, Australia. The profile 'socially connected, poor mental health' has the highest probability of hazardous alcohol consumption, while 'low social connection and good mental health' has the lowest.

- Relationship stress at workplace was associated with problem drinking patterns: a nationwide Internet-based prospective cohort study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Among nine work-related stresses categories, high relationship stress at the workplace in male and female and high physical demand in male was associated with an increased risk of developing problem drinking.

- Identifying Hazardous Alcohol Use in Primary Care: Concordance Between Phosphatidylethanol and Self-Reports. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: An alcohol biomarker and self-reported measures capture overlapping but distinct aspects of alcohol use in primary care. For primary care clinicians, PEth should be interpreted alongside self-reported measures rather than used as a standalone test. Combining assessment methods may improve identification of alcohol-related risk and support more individualized, context-sensitive clinical conversations.

- The reducing effect of visuospatial cognitive load on alcohol craving in problematic drinkers. [Journal Article]
- Alcohol use disorder is a significant global health concern, and craving serves as a central mechanism sustaining problematic drinking and a critical, cognitively accessible intervention target. This study examined whether visuospatial working memory depletion could reduce alcohol craving and attentional bias in problematic drinkers by disrupting the elaboration of intrusive alcohol-related thoug…

- Gaps in Receipt of Alcohol Treatment Services Among Adults with Hepatic Steatosis. [Journal Article]Am J Med. 2026 Sep 17. [Online ahead of print]AJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Among adults with steatotic liver disease reporting mild-moderate or hazardous levels of alcohol use, less than 1 in 7 received any form of alcohol treatment; yet such treatment was impactful among those who accessed it. Greater awareness and implementation of routine alcohol screening with timely linkage to alcohol treatment services is urgently needed for patients with chronic liver disease.

- Initiation of substance use-related treatments in surgical patients with risky alcohol use. [Journal Article]J Clin Anesth. 2026 Sep 17; 115:112324. [Online ahead of print]JC
- CONCLUSIONS: Although surgical patients with high or severe risk alcohol use were more likely to receive perioperative treatment or referrals than moderate-risk peers, overall rates of treatment initiation remained low. Addressing perioperative alcohol use in surgical patients requires concerted prioritization across clinical practices, health systems, and healthcare payors.

- Job stressors and the incidence of alcohol-related outcomes: prospective findings from the national French ESPS survey. [Journal Article]Alcohol Alcohol. 2026 Jul 20; 61(5).AA
- CONCLUSIONS: Job stressors, particularly those related to employment uncertainty, predicted the incidence of alcohol-related outcomes, especially binge drinking. Job stressors, including persistent exposures, may warrant more attention for preventing alcohol-related outcomes.

- Association of under-reporting of alcohol use with HIV viral non-suppression and an all-cause mortality risk score among people with HIV on antiretroviral therapy. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that under-reporting of high-risk alcohol use is common among PWH and suggest that under-reporting of alcohol use may mask other health issues, as reflected by increased mortality index scores. Low-cost methods to improve alcohol use are needed.

- Maternal gut and vaginal microbiota, alcohol use during pregnancy, and infant fetal alcohol spectrum disorder diagnosis in a South African cohort. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This is the first human study to investigate the maternal gut and vaginal microbiota in relation to alcohol use during pregnancy and infant FASD outcomes. Our findings suggest that alcohol use is associated with disruption of the maternal gut microbiota, with potential implications for FASD development in exposed infants. Further investigation of alcohol-associated maternal microbial disturbances may inform microbiota-targeted strategies to improve maternal and infant health linked to alcohol use.
