- Atypical Periocular Dermatophytosis Caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes Species Complex Misdiagnosed as Refractory Bacterial and Viral Infection. [Journal Article]Diagnostics (Basel). 2026 Oct 12; 16(20).D
- A previously healthy 4-year-old boy presented with progressive left eyelid swelling and erythema, without reported animal exposure. Initially diagnosed as impetiginized eczema, the lesion was treated with topical antibiotic and corticosteroid therapy. Due to early clinical worsening, this was subsequently escalated with oral amoxicillin-clavulanate (50 mg/kg/day) and azithromycin (10 mg/kg/day). …

- Herpes Simplex Virus Perinatal Management. [Journal Article]Ir Med J. 2026 Oct 22; 119(9):171.IM
- Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) is a double stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) virus with 2 serotypes, HSV-1 and HSV-2. Neonatal HSV infection is uncommon due to evidence-based interventions for pregnancy, delivery and the newborn. The study assessed whether pregnant women with a history of genital HSV and their infants were managed according to best practice recommendations.
- Concurrent varicella and dengue infection in an adolescent female: diagnostic and clinical challenges in an endemic setting. [Case Reports]IJID Reg. 2026 Dec; 21:101026.IR
- CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights the importance of considering dengue co-infection in patients with apparent varicella who develop persistent fever, abdominal pain, leukopenia, or thrombocytopenia in dengue-endemic settings. Early laboratory confirmation is essential to distinguish overlapping clinical features, guide appropriate management, and prevent missed or delayed diagnoses.

- Progressive Bilateral Weakness Followed by Unilateral Facial Palsy in Guillain-Barré Syndrome Temporally Associated With Multiple Vaccinations. [Case Reports]
- Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy in which facial weakness may occur as a cranial neuropathy. Unilateral facial palsy may also prompt a diagnosis of idiopathic Bell's palsy, creating a risk of diagnostic anchoring when broader neurologic symptoms are already present. We report a 32-year-old man with childhood epilepsy who described progressive bilate…

- Case Report: VV-ECMO rescue of severe pneumonia with polymicrobial mNGS detections and uncertain EBV significance in obesity. [Case Reports]
- Severe pneumonia with multiple microbial detections can make etiologic attribution and rescue decisions difficult. We report a 42-year-old man with obesity (body mass index, 36.3 kg/m[2]) who was admitted with rapidly progressive pneumonia, sepsis, acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, and multiorgan dysfunction [Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, 9]. Despite invasive ventilation, o…

- Acute cerebellitis as a post-infectious complication of primary varicella in an immunocompetent young adult: A case report. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: Post-varicella cerebellitis should be included in the differential diagnosis of adults presenting with acute truncal ataxia following recent primary varicella infection, even when neuroimaging is normal. Cerebrospinal fluid VZV PCR is a valuable diagnostic aid, and early antiviral therapy may be associated with favorable outcomes.

- In-Hospital Outcomes of Acyclovir With or Without Corticosteroid for Herpes Simplex Encephalitis: A Nationwide Retrospective Cohort Study. [Journal Article]Neurol Clin Pract. 2026 Dec; 16(6):e200675.NC
- CONCLUSIONS: Early adjunctive corticosteroid therapy was not associated with lower in-hospital mortality or better functional outcomes in patients with HSV encephalitis. Although our findings do not support the routine use of early adjunctive corticosteroids, further studies evaluating the optimal indications, timing, and duration of corticosteroid administration are needed to clarify its potential role in the management of HSV encephalitis.

- Development of a risk score to predict encephalitis by Herpes Simplex Virus and Varicella Zoster Virus. [Journal Article]
- Encephalitis guidelines recommend repeating a lumbar puncture (LP) 3-7 days after an initial negative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) herpes simplex virus (HSV) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test in patients with high suspicion for HSV or varicella zoster virus (VZV), but this subgroup has not been specified. Retrospective observational study of 602 adults with encephalitis from 2002 to 2023 from two…

- Herpes Simplex Esophagitis Superimposed on Eosinophilic Esophagitis in an Immunocompetent Patient. [Case Reports]
- Herpes simplex esophagitis (HSE) rarely occurs in immunocompetent patients. Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) may predispose to herpes simplex virus superinfection through epithelial barrier disruption. We present an immunocompetent woman with previous EoE managed with dietary modifications without pharmacologic therapy who developed severe odynophagia. Endoscopy showed erosive esophagitis mimicking…

- Case Report: Fatal varicella-zoster virus meningoencephalitis with Froin-like cerebrospinal fluid and hydrocephalus following pembrolizumab-containing chemoimmunotherapy. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights VZV CNS infection as an important diagnostic consideration in ICI-treated patients who develop herpes zoster and neurological symptoms, because infection may mimic or coexist with a neurological irAE. The temporal relationship with pembrolizumab raises, but does not establish, the possibility that PD-1 blockade modified the inflammatory response. Prompt virological testing and adequately dosed antiviral therapy are central to management; the role of adjunctive immunomodulation remains uncertain and should be individualized.

- Pruritus-dominant herpes zoster with concurrent contralateral upper limb pain in a patient with complete spinal cord injury: A case report. [Journal Article]J Spinal Cord Med. 2026 Oct 21; :1-5. [Online ahead of print]JS
- CONCLUSIONS: Focal pruritus warrants skin examination. When HZ is strongly suspected, timely empiric antiviral therapy should not await specialist assessment. The contralateral pain course was noteworthy, but an HZ-related mechanism remained uncertain.

- Modelling herpes simplex virus type 2 and Zika virus replication in mouse vaginal organoids and human vaginal spheroids. [Journal Article]Microbiol Spectr. 2026 Oct 21; :e0156926. [Online ahead of print]MS
- Sexually transmitted viral infections disproportionately affect women and have adverse outcomes on maternal and fetal health. Since they are acquired through the vaginal tract, the vaginal epithelium is an important site to study host-viral interactions. An in vitro model of mouse vaginal epithelial organoids that can be infected by herpes simplex virus was recently established. Here, we used mul…

- Presumed herpes simplex virus keratouveitis in a 2-year-old child: a case report. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: The sequential unilateral epithelial, stromal, endothelial, and anterior uveal involvement favored HSV, but absent aqueous-humor testing and negative post-treatment surface PCR precluded virological confirmation. This case supports longitudinal assessment of persistent unilateral corneal inflammation in young children and surveillance for recurrence, corneal sequelae, and impaired visual development.
