- Differential responses of fungal guilds to climatic effects mediated by changes in dominant vegetation. [Journal Article]
- Climate is a major driver of fungal species distributions and community composition, yet disentangling the effects of climate-mediated changes in dominant vegetation from other climatic effects remains a key challenge. To separate climatic effects mediated by dominant vegetation from other climatic effects on soil fungal communities, we analyzed soil fungal communities from eight European altitud…

- Global distribution and biogeography of ericoid mycorrhizal fungi. [Journal Article]
- Ericoid mycorrhizal (ErM) fungi play a crucial role across terrestrial ecosystems, forming mutualistic symbiosis with Ericaceae and contributing to soil organic matter dynamics. However, compared to other fungal groups, their biogeography remains unknown. Here, we combined several analytical approaches to analyze a newly compiled, large-scale dataset comprising 39 163 soil samples and more than 1…

- A root-soil association index reveals life-history strategies of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. [Journal Article]New Phytol. 2026 Sep; 251(5):2932-2947.NP
- Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal taxa differ in their life-history strategies, including their preferential association with intraradical vs extraradical compartments. We introduce the arbuscular mycorrhizal root-soil association index (AMF-RSI), a novel quantitative index describing the relative association of AM fungi with root vs soil compartments, corresponding to the previously proposed rh…

- Seasonality of composition, genomic potential and activity of coniferous forest soil microbiomes. [Journal Article]
- Coniferous forest soils represent a globally important carbon sink, where the microbiome is essential for carbon flux between tree roots, rhizosphere, litter and soil. Soil habitats, such as roots, rhizosphere, bulk soil and litter differ in physicochemical properties and composition of highly specialized microbial communities, whose activity reflects the seasonality of temperature and tree activ…

- From pathogens to partners: temporal and biogeographical patterns in fungal associations of alien trees. [Journal Article]New Phytol. 2026 Jun; 250(5):3381-3395.NP
- Alien trees reshape belowground fungal communities, but the factors governing the balance between mutualists and pathogens remain unclear. We tested whether residence time, mycorrhizal type, and biogeographical origin shape this balance, and whether alien stands differ from native vegetation. We sampled soils beneath 73 alien tree species in 48 chateau parks and native stands. Using ITS2 metabarc…

- Limitations of Common Molecular Markers in Fungal Biodiversity Analysis and the Benefits of Their Synergistic Use. [Journal Article]Mol Ecol Resour. 2026 Apr; 26(3):e70123.ME
- High-throughput sequencing of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) regions is the primary method for estimating fungal diversity from environmental DNA. However, reliance solely on ITS markers is complicated by its high variability in sequence length and the presence of multiple variants within a single genome, which can bias diversity estimates. This study compares the performance of the ITS1 a…

- Experimentally manipulating forest structure to mimic management strategies: effects on deadwood fungal diversity and decomposition. [Journal Article]
- Deadwood fungi are extremely diverse and crucial for carbon turnover in forests. To achieve multifunctional forests, we need to better understand the relationships between diversity, management, and ecosystem processes. We tested the effects of forest structure, i.e. canopy cover and deadwood enrichment, on fungal diversity and mass loss of European beech and Scots pine. We additionally assessed …

- Selective Pressure of Heavy Metals on Soil Microbial Taxa near a Smelting Area. [Journal Article]
- Soil pollution by heavy metals (HMs) poses a major threat to soil quality and human health, with mining and smelting industries identified as key sources. Soils around smelters are often considered polluted hotspots, being generally unsuitable for agricultural activities. Although many studies have identified microbial taxa able to survive in such environments, most have focused on relatively low…

- Transcriptome-guided discovery of novel plant-associated genes in a rhizosphere Pseudomonas. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This study provides new insights into the genetic basis of bacterial adaptation to the plant root environment. By integrating transcriptomic and comparative genomic analyses, we identified numerous genes upregulated during root colonization that are enriched in plant-associated Pseudomonas genomes. Our findings highlight previously overlooked bacterial functions with potential roles in plant-microbe interactions. The functional validation of a protein of the NlpC/P60 family supports its involvement in plant-bacteria interactions and underscores the importance of uncharacterized genes in shaping beneficial associations in the rhizosphere. - A global database of soil microbial phospholipid fatty acids and enzyme activities. [Journal Article]
- Soil microbes drive ecosystem function and play a critical role in how ecosystems respond to global change. Research surrounding soil microbial communities has rapidly increased in recent decades, and substantial data relating to phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) and potential enzyme activity have been collected and analysed. However, studies have mostly been restricted to local and regional scale…

- Fragile foundations: succession patterns of bacterial communities in fine woody debris and soil under long-term microclimate influence. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Deadwood decomposition and nutrient cycling are driven by complex ecological interactions. Microbial community dynamics are influenced by the interplay of FWD decomposition stage, tree species, and microclimatic conditions. Bacterial communities, although less frequently studied in this context, appear more stable over time than previously studied fungi. This stability may help sustain decomposition processes and nutrient turnover under the environmental variability associated with global change.

- Global hotspots of mycorrhizal fungal richness are poorly protected. [Journal Article]
- Mycorrhizal fungi are ecosystem engineers that sustain plant life and help regulate Earth's biogeochemical cycles[1-3]. However, in contrast to plants and animals, the global distribution of mycorrhizal fungal biodiversity is largely unknown, which limits our ability to monitor and protect key underground ecosystems[4,5]. Here we trained machine-learning algorithms on a global dataset of 25,000 g…
