- Real-world analysis of depression-related adverse events associated with the adsorbed anthrax vaccine: integrating pharmacovigilance signals, machine learning risk prediction, and transcriptomic mechanisms. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: AVA was associated with a potential depression-related pharmacovigilance signal, particularly among males and adults, with early post-vaccination onset. These findings support targeted mental health monitoring after AVA, clearer safety communication in anthrax prevention programs, and vigilance when levofloxacin or doxycycline is used for anthrax therapy. As spontaneous reporting cannot establish causality or incidence, controlled epidemiological studies are needed.

- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and several health professional organizations state that vaccines given to a nursing mother do not affect the safety of breastfeeding for mothers or infants and that breastfeeding is not a contraindication to the anthrax vaccine. Breastfed infants should be vaccinated according to the routine recommended schedules.[1-4]
- Effect of Co-administration of the anthrax vaccine adsorbed, adjuvanted with ciprofloxacin or doxycycline on antibiotic pharmacokinetics and the vaccine immunogenicity: A phase 2 drug-vaccine interaction study. [Randomized Controlled Trial]Vaccine. 2026 Feb 15; 73:128135.V
- CONCLUSIONS: CYFENDUS vaccination with or without ciprofloxacin or doxycycline had an acceptable safety profile and co-administration did not affect the relevant PK and immunogenicity parameters.

- CONCLUSIONS: The study met the pre-defined endpoint criteria, demonstrating protective level of immune response and non-inferiority of CYFENDUS to BioThrax vaccination. The CYFENDUS vaccine was well-tolerated in healthy adults.

- Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis causes inhalational anthrax-like disease in rabbits that is treatable with medical countermeasures. [Journal Article]
- Bacillus anthracis is a zoonotic organism that causes the disease anthrax due to the activity of virulence factors harbored on plasmids pXO1 and pXO2. Inhalation of B. anthracis spores results in pneumonic disease that progresses quickly, and often results in lethality in the absence of medical countermeasure (MCM) intervention. Recently, reports have identified Bacillus cereus isolates that poss…

- Anthrax: Transmission, Pathogenesis, Prevention and Treatment. [Review]
- Bacillus anthracis is a deadly pathogen that under unfavourable conditions forms highly resistant spores which enable them to survive for a long period of time. Spores of B. anthracis are transmitted through the contaminated soil or animal products and enter to the host through the skin, lungs or oral route and can cause cutaneous, injection, inhalation and gastrointestinal anthrax, respectively.…

- Enhancing the in vivo efficacy of anthrax vaccine using trimethylchitosan covalently coated chitosomes in a single-step microfluidic synthesis. [Journal Article]Int J Biol Macromol. 2025 Apr; 304(Pt 1):140689.IJ
- Liposomal vaccines have been developed extensively in recent years, and considerable progress has been made in the prevention of infectious diseases. Quaternary chitosan-coated liposomes were used in the present study. Liposomes coated with TMC (namely chitosomes) were synthesized in a single microfluidic step in which liposomes were formed and coated with trimethylchitosan (TMC) via covalent and…

- To enhance the cellular uptake of liposomes, we prepared conventional liposomes with targeting molecules and surface-charged liposomes and evaluated their potential as nano-carriers and vaccine adjuvants by comparing their endocytosis efficiencies using immune cells. Surface-charged liposomes were synthesized via a one-step microfluidic method, which provided a novel, simple, fast, and highly rep…

- Compatible co-administration of BioThrax® vaccine and ciprofloxacin-Results of a randomized open-label drug-vaccine interaction trial. [Journal Article]
- The recommended treatment for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following known/suspected exposure to Bacillus anthracis involves immunization with anthrax vaccine adsorbed (AVA, i.e., BioThrax® vaccine) and a course of antimicrobial therapy. A drug-vaccine interaction clinical trial was conducted to determine whether this combined treatment might modify antimicrobial exposure or vaccine immunogeni…

- United States' regulatory approved pharmacotherapies for nuclear reactor explosions and anthrax-associated bioterrorism. [Review]
- Nuclear reactor incidents and bioterrorism outbreaks are concerning public health disasters. Little is known about US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved agents that can mitigate consequences of these events. We review FDA data supporting regulatory approvals of these agents.

- Role of site-directed mutagenesis and adjuvants in the stability and potency of anthrax protective antigen. [Review]
- Anthrax is a zoonotic infection caused by the gram-positive, aerobic, spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis. Depending on the origin of the infection, serious health problems or mortality is possible. The virulence of B. anthracis is reliant on three pathogenic factors, which are secreted upon infection: protective antigen (PA), lethal factor (LF), and edema factor (EF). Systemic illness res…

- A Novel Toll-Like Receptor 2 Agonist Protects Mice in a Prophylactic Treatment Model Against Challenge With Bacillus anthracis. [Journal Article]
- Current therapies for anthrax include the use of antibiotics (i.e., doxycycline, and ciprofloxacin), an anthrax vaccine (BioThrax) and Bacillus anthracis-specific, monoclonal antibody (mAb) (i.e., Raxibacumab and obiltoxaximab). In this study, we investigated the activity of immunomodulators, which potentiate inflammatory responses through innate immune receptors. The rationale for the use of inn…

- Insufficient Anthrax Lethal Toxin Neutralization Is Associated with Antibody Subclass and Domain Specificity in the Plasma of Anthrax-Vaccinated Individuals. [Journal Article]
- Anthrax vaccine adsorbed (AVA) is a significant line of defense against bioterrorist attack from Bacillus anthracis spores. However, in a subset of individuals, this vaccine may produce a suboptimal quantity of anti-protective antigen (PA), antibodies that are poorly neutralizing, and/or antibody titers that wane over time, necessitating annual boosters. To study individuals with such poor respon…
