  • Serous fluid cytopathology: landmark developments in techniques, terminology & clinical application. [Review]
    Acta Cytol. 2026 Jul 16; :1-42. [Online ahead of print]Chandra A, Heine R, … Cai GAC
  • CONCLUSIONS: The review begins by addressing the value of cytological examination of the fluid samples in conjunction with clinical, radiological and biochemical data interpreted by the treating physician. It then covers the advances in cytopreparatory techniques with special reference to existing and emerging ancillary techniques available to obtain maximal diagnostic, prognostic & therapeutic information for the practice of precision medicine. The concept of mesothelioma as a cytological diagnosis has been made possible in recent years through clinical research and advocacy by experts and this has added value to serous fluid samples especially when this is the only sampling method available for a patient. Advances in the recommended repertoire of immunostains and a standardised approach through the use of diagnostic categories has been made possible by the International system for reporting serous fluid cytopathology. The reporting system has found application to other types of fluid samples, most recently, cerebrospinal fluid cytology which will be included in the forthcoming edition of the terminology system and is introduced in this special issue. The review charts a journey commemorating important landmarks in our current understanding of serous fluids in diagnostic cytopathology.
  • Decoding the CSF Proteomic Signature of Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: A Systematic Review. [Systematic Review]
    Molecules. 2026 Jul 02; 31(13).Kwiecień A, Dudzic M, … Sokół BM
  • Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a potentially reversible neurological disorder characterized by gait disturbance, cognitive impairment, and urinary incontinence; however, its diagnosis and prediction of shunt responsiveness remain challenging. This systematic review aimed to synthesize current evidence on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteomic biomarkers in iNPH and to identify mo…
  • Pathogenic Potential of Pseudoxanthomonas kaohsiungensis Strain IMB-1 Based on Whole-Genome Sequencing. [Journal Article]
    Biology (Basel). 2026 Jun 25; 15(13).Belkova N, Smurova N, … Nemchenko UB
  • Mass spectrometry and high-throughput sequencing have been introduced into clinical bacteriology. We characterized strain IMB-1, previously isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid of a child, as Pseudoxanthomonas kaohsiungensis and analyzed its biological properties, resistance phenotype, and complete genome. The IMB-1 strain displayed amylolytic, weak lipolytic activities, and it exhibited a pheno…
  • Vasoactive intestinal Peptide as a diagnostic or prognostic biomarker in multiple sclerosis: A systematic review. [Review]
Mult Scler Relat Disord. 2026 Jul 05; 113:107377. [Online ahead of print]Cabrera-Martín A, Juarranz Y, … Martínez CMS
  • CONCLUSIONS: Clinical evidence supporting VIP as a biomarker in MS remains limited since most available evidence is cross-sectional and lacks prognostic utility. Substantial heterogeneity, small sample sizes, and moderate-to-high bias preclude firm conclusions. Larger studies, standardized quantification methods, and longitudinal designs are needed to clarify its biomarker value.
  • Anti-MAG-associated neuropathy: a case report and literature review. [Case Reports]
    BMC Neurol. 2026 Jul 11; 26(1).Chang D, Bao X, Li YBN
  • CONCLUSIONS: Low-titer anti-MAG IgM combined with typical clinical, electrophysiological and serological findings can confirm MAG neuropathy. Individualized low-dose rituximab achieves satisfactory efficacy for elderly patients complicated with underlying cerebrovascular disorders in early disease stage. Concurrent new-onset autoimmune hyperthyroidism is a rare clinical coincidence in this disease, requiring long-term follow-up observation.
  • CSF and plasma tau biomarkers in the Down syndrome-Alzheimer's disease continuum. [Journal Article]
    EBioMedicine. 2026 Jul 11; 130:106370. [Online ahead of print]Arranz J, Lantero-Rodríguez J, … Montoliu-Gaya LE
  • CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the complementary roles of CSF and plasma tau biomarkers in tracking disease progression: CSF biomarkers capture early pathological changes, whereas plasma biomarkers more effectively reflect disease progression within symptomatic stages. Furthermore, tau biomarkers might support disease staging and monitor clinical progression in DS-AD, but with the need to adapt biomarker frameworks to this specific population.
