- Corticospinal Subfiber Neurite Density Index Detects Upper Motor Neuron Degeneration in Prediagnostic Patients With Sporadic Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. [Journal Article]Eur J Neurol. 2026 Jul; 33(7):e70703.EJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that CST subfibers NDI values are promising neuroimaging markers for detecting in vivo UMN degeneration in prediagnostic ALS. Moreover, combining blood and neuroimaging markers may further improve early diagnostic performance.

- Serous fluid cytopathology: landmark developments in techniques, terminology & clinical application. [Review]Acta Cytol. 2026 Jul 16; :1-42. [Online ahead of print]AC
- CONCLUSIONS: The review begins by addressing the value of cytological examination of the fluid samples in conjunction with clinical, radiological and biochemical data interpreted by the treating physician. It then covers the advances in cytopreparatory techniques with special reference to existing and emerging ancillary techniques available to obtain maximal diagnostic, prognostic & therapeutic information for the practice of precision medicine. The concept of mesothelioma as a cytological diagnosis has been made possible in recent years through clinical research and advocacy by experts and this has added value to serous fluid samples especially when this is the only sampling method available for a patient. Advances in the recommended repertoire of immunostains and a standardised approach through the use of diagnostic categories has been made possible by the International system for reporting serous fluid cytopathology. The reporting system has found application to other types of fluid samples, most recently, cerebrospinal fluid cytology which will be included in the forthcoming edition of the terminology system and is introduced in this special issue. The review charts a journey commemorating important landmarks in our current understanding of serous fluids in diagnostic cytopathology.

- Prevalence of Intraoperative Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence in Spontaneous Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak Patients. [Journal Article]Otol Neurotol. 2026 Jul 15. [Online ahead of print]ON
- CONCLUSIONS: The intraoperative prevalence of SSCD and near-dehiscence (17%) in sCSFL patients was substantially higher than the general population, yet significantly lower than rates predicted by preoperative CT. Obesity, sleep apnea, and intracranial pressure do not predict intraoperative SSCD in this cohort. CT should guide the need for intraoperative confirmation of SSCD in patients with sCSFLs.

- Intraoperative Cytokines and Postcraniotomy Infection in Benign Brain Tumors: An Exploratory Prospective Study. [Journal Article]J Clin Med. 2026 Jul 01; 15(13).JC
- Objective: Intracranial infection is a severe complication that can occur following neurosurgery, and early diagnosis is crucial for improving patient prognosis. In this study, we aimed to investigate, from an exploratory perspective, whether the immune microenvironment of intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is associated with postoperative intracranial infection (PII) in patients undergoing…

- Decoding the CSF Proteomic Signature of Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus: A Systematic Review. [Systematic Review]Molecules. 2026 Jul 02; 31(13).M
- Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a potentially reversible neurological disorder characterized by gait disturbance, cognitive impairment, and urinary incontinence; however, its diagnosis and prediction of shunt responsiveness remain challenging. This systematic review aimed to synthesize current evidence on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteomic biomarkers in iNPH and to identify mo…

- Pathogenic Potential of Pseudoxanthomonas kaohsiungensis Strain IMB-1 Based on Whole-Genome Sequencing. [Journal Article]Biology (Basel). 2026 Jun 25; 15(13).B
- Mass spectrometry and high-throughput sequencing have been introduced into clinical bacteriology. We characterized strain IMB-1, previously isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid of a child, as Pseudoxanthomonas kaohsiungensis and analyzed its biological properties, resistance phenotype, and complete genome. The IMB-1 strain displayed amylolytic, weak lipolytic activities, and it exhibited a pheno…

- Diffusion Tensor Imaging Along the Perivascular Space (DTI-ALPS) as a Neuroimaging Biomarker of Glymphatic Function in Neurodegenerative Diseases: A Systematic Review. [Systematic Review]Int J Mol Sci. 2026 Jun 26; 27(13).IJ
- The glymphatic system has been proposed as a brain-wide pathway that promotes the exchange between cerebrospinal and interstitial fluids and facilitates the clearance of metabolic waste products, including amyloid-β and tau proteins. Diffusion tensor imaging analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) has emerged as a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging technique proposed to indirectly a…

- Vasoactive intestinal Peptide as a diagnostic or prognostic biomarker in multiple sclerosis: A systematic review. [Review]Mult Scler Relat Disord. 2026 Jul 05; 113:107377. [Online ahead of print]MS
- CONCLUSIONS: Clinical evidence supporting VIP as a biomarker in MS remains limited since most available evidence is cross-sectional and lacks prognostic utility. Substantial heterogeneity, small sample sizes, and moderate-to-high bias preclude firm conclusions. Larger studies, standardized quantification methods, and longitudinal designs are needed to clarify its biomarker value.

- The clinical management of patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection initiating combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) may be complicated by immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS), a paradoxical inflammatory response capable of unmasking previously subclinical opportunistic infections. Although classical manifestations of IRIS are well recognized, atypical…

- Two infants, aged 3 and 5 months, were admitted to the neurosurgery ward with febrile meningeal signs and underwent lumbar punctures, which revealed turbid cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with a predominantly neutrophilic pleocytosis, decreased CSF glucose levels, and elevated CSF protein levels. CSF cultures revealed alpha-hemolytic colonies. Identification by time-of-flight mass spectrometry with mat…

- Anti-MAG-associated neuropathy: a case report and literature review. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: Low-titer anti-MAG IgM combined with typical clinical, electrophysiological and serological findings can confirm MAG neuropathy. Individualized low-dose rituximab achieves satisfactory efficacy for elderly patients complicated with underlying cerebrovascular disorders in early disease stage. Concurrent new-onset autoimmune hyperthyroidism is a rare clinical coincidence in this disease, requiring long-term follow-up observation.

- CSF and plasma tau biomarkers in the Down syndrome-Alzheimer's disease continuum. [Journal Article]EBioMedicine. 2026 Jul 11; 130:106370. [Online ahead of print]E
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the complementary roles of CSF and plasma tau biomarkers in tracking disease progression: CSF biomarkers capture early pathological changes, whereas plasma biomarkers more effectively reflect disease progression within symptomatic stages. Furthermore, tau biomarkers might support disease staging and monitor clinical progression in DS-AD, but with the need to adapt biomarker frameworks to this specific population.
