  • Small molecules rescue pathogenic POLGA aggregation and restore its functions in a mouse model of PEO. [Journal Article]
EMBO Mol Med. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]Mohammed A, Kaur T, … Sengupta SEM
  • POLGA, the catalytic subunit of the mitochondrial DNA polymerase, is essential for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) replication and maintenance. Mutations in POLGA cause progressive external ophthalmoplegia (PEO), but the underlying pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we show that the mitochondrial E3 ligase MITOL hyperubiquitylates PEO-associated POLGA mutants at lysine 1060, triggering conform…
  • Targeting the Cav1.2-KCa1.1 axis prevents rabies virus internalization and protects against lethal infection. [Journal Article]
    PLoS Pathog. 2026 Oct 06; 22(10):e1014675. [Online ahead of print]Sun Z, Wang J, … Wang JPP
  • Rabies is an almost always fatal disease caused by rabies virus (RABV). Once RABV enters the central nervous system, the mortality rate is almost 100%. Therefore, preventing RABV from entering the nervous system is crucial for the development of anti-RABV therapeutics. Here, we found that the L-type calcium channel Cav1.2 pore-forming subunit (Cav1.2) and potassium calcium-activated channel subfa…
  • Calcium channel blocker-associated pulmonary toxicity: epidemiology, mechanisms, and clinical management. [Review]
Front Pharmacol. 2026; 17:1892392.Jiang Q, Cui WH, … Wang XQFP
  • Calcium channel blockers are first-line medications for the treatment of hypertension, angina pectoris, and arrhythmias, and are generally well-tolerated. However, in recent years, there have been reports indicating that CCBs may cause severe pulmonary toxicity, such as non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema and acute respiratory distress syndrome. This article employs a comprehensive review methodology…
  • Medication-specific risk of atrial fibrillation in patients with coronary artery disease. [Journal Article]
    Biomed Eng Lett. 2026 Sep; 16(5):1333-1343.Kim T, Ryu G, … Shin HBE
  • Cardiovascular medications used in coronary artery disease (CAD) can potentially modulate the risk of incident atrial fibrillation (AF). However, comprehensive data regarding medication-specific AF risk in the CAD population remain limited. This study aimed to identify prevalent medications prescribed to patients with CAD and evaluate their independent associations with AF risk. In this retrospec…

  • Several studies have supported Dr Gideon Koren’s 1993 landmark article, “Medications Which Can Kill a Toddler with One Tablet or Teaspoonful.” Although each study has its own merits, most focus solely on pediatric overdoses, and few provide an exhaustive reference list for real-time evaluation of ingestions in children and adults. The following xenobiotics warrant special attention because of the…
  • A novel CACNA1S variant associated with diltiazem-related worsening of hypokalemic periodic paralysis: a case report. [Case Reports]
    Neurol Sci. 2026 Aug 25; 47(9).Sugiura H, Watanabe K, … Nakamura TNS
  • CONCLUSIONS: The p.(Met1366Arg) variant is located in the S6 segment of CaV1.1, outside the canonical S4 arginine residues implicated in most cases of CACNA1S-related HypoPP; nevertheless, strong intrafamilial segregation evidence supports its pathogenicity. Furthermore, its proximity to the diltiazem-binding site raises the possibility of altered drug-channel interactions. The observed diltiazem-associated worsening of HypoPP may be variant-specific rather than a class effect of LTCCBs. Nevertheless, careful monitoring may be warranted when prescribing these agents to patients with HypoPP.
