- Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed): Ethinyl Estradiol [BOOK]Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed). National Library of Medicine (US): Bethesda (MD).BOOK
- This record contains information specific to ethinyl estradiol used alone. Users with an interest in an oral contraceptive should consult the record entitled, "Contraceptives, Oral, Combined." There is little information available on the use of ethinyl estradiol alone during breastfeeding. Levels in milk appear to be low. Based on studies on oral contraceptives that contain ethinyl estradiol, imm…
- Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed®): Contraceptives, Oral, Combined [BOOK]Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed®). National Institute of Child Health and Human Development: Bethesda (MD).BOOK
- The weight of current evidence seems to indicate that combination oral contraceptives probably do not affect the composition of milk substantially in healthy, well-nourished mothers and do not adversely affect long-term infant growth and development. Combined oral contraceptives might transiently affect growth negatively during the first month after introduction. The magnitude of the effect on la…
- Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed): Desogestrel [BOOK]Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed). National Library of Medicine (US): Bethesda (MD).BOOK
- Desogestrel is only available in the United States in combination oral contraceptive products containing 150 mcg of desogestrel and 30 mcg of ethinyl estradiol. Based on the available evidence, expert opinion holds that nonhormonal methods are preferred during breastfeeding and progestin-only contraceptive are preferred over combined oral contraceptives in breastfeeding women, especially during t…
- Detection and elimination of cyanobacteria from frescoes: the case of the St. Brizio Chapel (Orvieto Cathedral, Italy). [Journal Article]
- A rosy discoloration partly masking the Luca Signorelli frescoes in St. Brizio Chapel (Orvieto Cathedral, Italy) for many years proved to be a biological alteration, so the present research focused on investigating biodeteriogens and selecting an appropriate biocide to treat them. Optical epifluorescence and electronic microscopic observations of the rosy powder revealed a prevalent autofluoresce…

- A randomized prospective trial comparing gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist/recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (rFSH) versus GnRH-agonist/rFSH in women pretreated with oral contraceptives before in vitro fertilization. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: The OC pretreatment in recombinant FSH/GnRH-antagonist protocols provides a patient-friendly regimen and can be optimized for weekday retrievals. No difference was seen in number of 2PN embryos, cryopreserved embryos, embryos transferred, implantation and pregnancy rates between the two stimulation protocols.

- The effect of progestins on vascular endothelial growth factor, oestrogen receptor and progesterone receptor immunoreactivity and endothelial cell density in human endometrium. [Journal Article]
- One common side-effect of contraceptive use is that it often leads to disrupted endometrial bleeding patterns. This may be due to changes in endothelial density and vessel integrity. To investigate whether the level of endometrial immunoreactive vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), oestrogen receptor or progesterone receptor (PR) have any role in this, women were treated with either Mircett…
- [Recurrent bleeding of thalamic cavernous angioma under hormonal treatment. A case report]. [Case Reports]
- A case of recurrent bleeding from a probable left thalamic cavernoma in a 26 year old woman taking hormonal treatment is reported. Four episodes of bleeding were clinically and radiologically documented, prior to her referral to our institution. Interestingly, each episode occurred three weeks after starting hormonal treatment, dydrogesterone, desogestrel ethinylestradiol, chlormadin, nomegestrel…

- Efficacy, cycle control, and side effects of low- and lower-dose oral contraceptives: a randomized trial of 20 micrograms and 35 micrograms estrogen preparations. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- Estrogen content represents a tradeoff between cycle control and side effects, but few direct comparisons of 20 and 30/35 micrograms preparations are available. To address this issue, we conducted a randomized, open-label multicenter clinical trial comparing Alesse (20 micrograms ethinyl estradiol [EE]), Mircette (20 micrograms EE), and Ortho Tri-Cyclen (35 micrograms EE) among 463 OC starters or…

- The effect of etonogestrel on VEGF, oestrogen and progesterone receptor immunoreactivity and endothelial cell number in human endometrium. [Clinical Trial]
- Contraceptive use often leads to disrupted endometrial bleeding patterns in women. In this study, two different contraceptive regimes (Mircette, a monophasic oral contraceptive and Implanon, a long-acting gestagen) were used and their effects on the immunoreactivity of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), oestrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and endothelial cell number were d…

- Treatment of chronic anovulation resistant to clomiphene citrate (CC) by using oral contraceptive ovarian suppression followed by repeat CC treatment. [Clinical Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: Suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis for 2 months with OCs followed by CC treatment results in excellent rates of ovulation and pregnancy in women who had previously failed to ovulate on CC alone. This treatment offers an effective, reasonable, inexpensive, and low-risk alternative before gonadotropin therapy.

- Ovarian activity in women taking an oral contraceptive containing 20 microg ethinyl estradiol and 150 microg desogestrel: effects of low estrogen doses during the hormone-free interval. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: The Mircette regimen, which includes low ethinyl estradiol doses during the hormone-free interval, more effectively suppresses ovarian follicular activity with a low monthly estrogen dose.

- Metabolic and endocrine effects of the desogestrel-containing oral contraceptive Mircette. [Clinical Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: Overall, Mircette treatment was associated with expected effects on the pituitary-ovarian axis, triglycerides, and serum binding proteins; a modest decline in glucose tolerance; and a favorable effect on lipid profiles as a result of increases in total high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol subfraction 2 in the absence of changes in total cholesterol or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

- An open-label, multicenter, noncomparative safety and efficacy study of Mircette, a low-dose estrogen-progestin oral contraceptive. The Mircette Study Group. [Clinical Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: The study confirmed that Mircette is a safe and efficacious oral contraceptive that is well tolerated and acceptable to women who have previously used oral contraceptives, as well as first-time users.
