- State of the art imaging for endometriosis and adenomyosis. [Review]Clin Radiol. 2026 Sep 09; :107472. [Online ahead of print]CR
- Endometriosis is a chronic oestrogen-dependent condition characterised by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus. Although benign, the associated chronic inflammation and fibrosis can result in substantial symptomatic burden, including chronic pelvic pain, menorrhagia, dysmenorrhoea and dyspareunia. Adenomyosis, which commonly co-exists with endometriosis, is defined by endome…

- 5-year survival rate and determinants of decreased survival among patients with breast cancer in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis. [Systematic Review]BMJ Glob Health. 2026 Oct 06; 11(10).BG
- CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals a critically low 5-year survival rate of 40.4% for breast cancer in Africa. Poor survival is linked to advanced tumour features, suboptimal treatment and patient-related factors, with comorbidities and illiteracy being the strongest patient-related factors. These results highlight the urgent need for integrated strategies focused on early diagnosis, public education, equitable access to multimodal therapies and systematic management of comorbidities across the continent.

- Raloxifene suppresses chemically-induced oxidative hepatocyte injury in vitro and in vivo by targeting protein disulfide isomerase. [Journal Article]Toxicol Appl Pharmacol. 2026 Oct 06; :118074. [Online ahead of print]TA
- Ferroptosis, often characterized by glutathione depletion-associated oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, contributes importantly to many pathological conditions, including drug-induced liver injury. Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI or PDIA1) has emerged as a pivotal upstream regulator of chemically-triggered ferroptosis and also an important therapeutic target. In this work, we identified ra…

- STING reprogramming by estrogen promotes neutrophil extracellular trap formation and sex-biased resistance to ADC therapy. [Journal Article]Cell. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]Cell
- Sex differences in cancer therapy response remain poorly understood. Using a "phase II-like preclinical trial" across 55 CLDN18.2+ pancreatic cancer patient-derived xenografts, we identify marked female-biased resistance to CLDN18.2-targeted antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) therapy despite equivalent antigen expression. Mechanistically, estrogen signals through GPER1 to upregulate TRAF6, redirecting…

- Stage-resolved attenuation of pharmaceutical mixture risk in a full-scale lagoon-wetland wastewater treatment system. [Journal Article]J Hazard Mater. 2026 Sep 05; 517:143504. [Online ahead of print]JH
- Wastewater treatment performance is commonly evaluated based on contaminant removal, although environmental protection ultimately depends on reducing the cumulative ecological risk imposed by complex pharmaceutical mixtures. Here, we investigated the barrier-specific attenuation of estrogens, antidepressants, and antiretrovirals in a full-scale lagoon treatment system coupled to a pilot-scale con…

- Revisiting the relation between oral contraceptive use and attentional engagement in everyday life: The role of formulation. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(10):e0359652.Plos
- Oral contraceptives (OCs) are composed of artificial estrogen (ethinyl-estradiol) and/or progesterone (progestin), which can attach to receptors in the brain and potentially influence cognition. One prior study suggested that OC use was associated with increased mind-wandering - implying that OC use was associated with detriments to attention. In contrast, two subsequent well-powered conceptual r…

- Sex differences in hepatitis A virus infection in mice. [Journal Article]PLoS Pathog. 2026 Oct; 22(10):e1014660.PP
- Epidemiological studies show that more men are hospitalized for severe hepatitis A than women. However, the extent to which social and behavioral differences versus intrinsic biological mechanisms account for this disparity in disease incidence remains unclear. To better define how sex influences infection outcome, we challenged male and female Ifnar1-/- mice with HAV and quantified virus replica…

- Spatial organization of HPV-associated immune programs across tissue compartments in oropharyngeal cancer. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(10):e0356717.Plos
- CONCLUSIONS: HPV-associated immune transcriptional programs identified in bulk OPC show consistent spatial organization across lymphoid follicular and tumor tissue compartments. The most robust spatial feature was within-patient compartmentalization between LFRs and TTRs, whereas evidence for HPV-associated differences within individual spatial compartments was limited. These findings emphasize the importance of anatomical context when interpreting transcriptional programs in OPC.

- Mammary secretory carcinoma in a female domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus): histopathological and immunohistochemical features. [Case Reports]Vet Res Commun. 2026 Oct 06; 50(6).VR
- Secretory carcinoma of the breast is a rare histological subtype in women and is uncommon in female dogs and cats, with only two cases described in female dogs and one case described in a cat. This report describes the histopathological and immunohistochemical features of secretory carcinoma of the mammary gland in a domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Microscopic evaluation revealed a non-e…

- Association of [18]F-FDG PET/CT Radiomics with Tumor Molecular Features in Breast Cancer. [Journal Article]Mol Imaging Radionucl Ther. 2026 Oct 06; 35(3):166-174.MI
- CONCLUSIONS: In this study, radiomic features derived from [18]F-FDG PET/CT images demonstrated poor or non-discriminatory performance in the assessment of ER, PR and Ki-67 status. Although a preliminary signal of an association was observed for HER-2 status, this finding should be considered hypothesis-generating only due to the low number of HER-2-positive cases in the test subset and the lack of independent external validation. In larger cohorts prospective, multicenter studies are needed to validate this potential association.

- Parabens and estrogen-mediated cancers: unraveling coincidence, co-occurrence, and causality. [Review]NPJ Womens Health. 2026; 4(1):31.NW
- Paraben esters are endocrine disruptors linked to breast cancer, yet their role in other estrogen-mediated cancers remains limited. Preclinical evidence suggests that parabens accumulate in tissues and may promote carcinogenesis, while clinical data indicate widespread exposure. Our re-analysis of cervicovaginal metabolomes revealed elevated paraben metabolites in endometrial and cervical cancer …

- Establishment of pathology-validated immortalized patient-derived ovarian endometriosis epithelial cell line. [Journal Article]Biomed Rep. 2026 Nov; 25(5):133.BR
- Endometriosis is a heterogeneous gynecological disorder for which experimental model development is often limited by diagnostic ambiguity and the restricted lifespan of primary epithelial cultures. Although immortalization strategies enable long-term expansion of patient-derived cells, concerns remain regarding the preservation of disease-specific biological characteristics and the risk of model …

- CONCLUSIONS: Both overall and central adiposity were associated with more severe menopause-related symptoms; however, estradiol mediated only the association between central adiposity and symptom severity. These findings suggest that different adiposity patterns may be associated with menopausal symptoms through distinct biological pathways.

- Pure metaplastic squamous cell carcinomas (MSCC) of the breast are rare. We report the case of a 57-year-old woman who presented with a breast abscess in whom a papillomatous lesion was identified during incision and drainage. The initial biopsy demonstrated hyperplastic squamous epithelium with koilocytic atypia, raising the possibility of condylomata acuminata. Subsequent wide excision revealed…
