- Dynamics of virological suppression and systemic immune-inflammatory response following antiretroviral therapy in pediatric HIV infection. [Journal Article]Front Cell Infect Microbiol. 2026; 16:1918829.FC
- CONCLUSIONS: In this pediatric HIV cohort, SII failed to improve in nearly half of patients despite successful ART, dissociating from both CD4 reconstitution and HIV RNA suppression. These findings suggest SII reflects a residual inflammatory state driven by mechanisms beyond viral replication, including ART class-specific, sex-related, and developmental factors. Routine SII monitoring may identify patients at ongoing inflammatory risk despite virological success; larger prospective studies are needed.

- Population Pharmacokinetics of Dolutegravir in Plasma and Cerebrospinal Fluid in Adults Living With HIV. [Journal Article]CPT Pharmacometrics Syst Pharmacol. 2026 Oct; 15(10):e70345.CP
- Characterizing dolutegravir penetration into the central nervous system is important for optimizing human immunodeficiency virus treatment outcomes, yet population-specific pharmacokinetic data describing cerebrospinal fluid disposition and equilibration kinetics remain lacking. This study characterizes dolutegravir pharmacokinetics in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid to describe the plasma-to-cere…

- Gender and Contraception in Kenya: a Scoping Review. [Review]Reprod Health. 2026 Sep 24; 23(1).RH
- CONCLUSIONS: This review presents a comprehensive account of the influence of gender norms on contraceptive usage patterns, though addressing sociocultural norms is complex. Public health interventions can improve contraceptive counselling by providers, involve males due to their decision-making dominance, and improve service accessibility by integrating HIV, contraceptive and domestic violence services. Wider structural factors surrounding education, employment and subsequent socioeconomic mobility for women will always shape the success of interventions. Further research could identify how this varies by region or demographic. Women's access to contraception is an important health issue. Kenya aims for 62% of reproductive-age women to use contraception and had high rates of contraceptive use compared to other African countries. However, since 2015, contraceptive use fell well below that target, while rates of unsafe abortions and maternal deaths remain high. This review summarises women's beliefs about what society expects and considers acceptable, and their impact on contraceptive use, particularly within Western Kenya. Women's decisions about contraception are affected by the opinions of their partners and others in their social circle (such as friends, family, and healthcare providers). In heterosexual romantic relationships, studies showed that in this context male partners often have more power than women, so their disapproval can cause women to avoid contraception or use it secretly. When people in a woman's social circle have disapproving or negative opinions about contraception, this can have a similar effect. Studies showed that both reproducing and satisfying male intimate partners were conceptualised as important, gendered duties, leading to the avoidance of contraception. Levels of education, financial security and employment led to greater decision-making agency in most studies, associated with greater access to information about contraception including from peers. Involving men in family planning discussions, training healthcare providers to discuss contraception non-judgementally and combining contraceptive services with other healthcare services to improve access could lead to increased contraceptive use.

- Diagnostic performance of a centrifugation-free stool processing kit in conjunction with Xpert®MTB/RIF Ultra for paediatric tuberculosis: a multicentre prospective study in five low and middle-income countries. [Multicenter Study]BMC Infect Dis. 2026 Aug 10; 26(1).BI
- CONCLUSIONS: This is one of the largest studies to evaluate stool as an alternative specimen for diagnosing paediatric TB. Although the WHO's target product profile was not fully met, stool testing with SPK/Ultra represents a viable alternative to invasive sampling methods, especially in subgroups of interest.

- The Potential Impact of Undisclosed Use of HIV Treatment and Prevention Antiretrovirals on Blood Safety. [Review]Transfus Med Rev. 2026 Sep 08; :151045. [Online ahead of print]TM
- The use of antiretroviral (ARV) medications for HIV treatment and prevention is a potential blood safety concern. HIV screening algorithms rely on the predictable appearance of viral RNA, p24 antigen, and anti-HIV antibodies during acute and early infection. However, exposure to ARVs can alter these biomarker dynamics and potentially compromise HIV detection. Evidence indicates that early initiat…

- CONCLUSIONS: HCV remains frequent in our unit, particularly among GBMSM with HIV, GBMSM who use PrEP and those reporting condomless sex, drug use or concomitant STIs. Despite highly effective direct-acting antivirals, transmission within the GBMSM population persists. Enhanced prevention strategies, targeted education on safer sex and harm reduction strategies are essential.

- Psi RNA-specific Binding Promotes HIV-1 Gag Conformational Change Critical for Immature Viral Particle Assembly. [Journal Article]RNA. 2026 Sep 29. [Online ahead of print]RNA
- The immature HIV-1 virion is assembled by the Gag polyprotein using inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6) as an essential assembly co-factor. Gag binds the genomic RNA Psi packaging signal via the nucleocapsid (NC) domain and associates with the plasma membrane via the matrix (MA) domain. Previous studies revealed that Gag exists in both compact (C) and extended (E) conformational states in solution. O…

- Prevalence, Trends, and Associated Factors of HIV, Syphilis, and Anti-Hepatitis C Virus Seropositivity Among Attendees at Voluntary Counseling and Testing Clinics in Zhejiang Province, China, From 2022 to 2024: Retrospective Quantitative Study. [Journal Article]JMIR Public Health Surveill. 2026 Sep 29; 12:e96584.JP
- CONCLUSIONS: From 2022 to 2024 in Zhejiang Province, the HIV and anti-HCV positivity rates among VCT clients at CDC-affiliated clinics declined, while the syphilis positivity rates increased. The coinfection positivity rates for these 3 infections remained at low levels. Individuals reporting homosexual behavior constituted a high-risk group for HIV positivity yet exhibited a lower positivity rate for anti-HCV. Among CDC-affiliated VCT clients, older age, lower educational attainment, and prior HIV testing history were associated with higher infection positivity rates, suggesting that these characteristics might help refine targeting of VCT and prevention efforts within this setting.
