- Adverse effects of vaping on human health: a brief review of mechanisms and long-term consequences. [Review]Arh Hig Rada Toksikol. 2026 Sep 01; 77(3):153-159.AH
- Vaping, often advertised as a safe alternative to traditional tobacco smoking, has recently been subjected to active scientific research due to its potential adverse effects on human health. This narrative review synthesises selected recent literature to provide a comprehensive view of the systemic risks associated with the use of electronic cigarettes. It lists key chemical components (propylene…

- Building on recently developed ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) instrumentation, this work presents the first chiral and achiral analyses of multicomponent mixtures and real-world samples using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) coupled to soft X-ray IMS. The implementation of ultra-fast polarity switching IMS technology, previously developed for hyphenated gas chromatography (GC), enables a…

- Assessment of circulating xenin as a potential metabolic biomarker in active smokers. [Journal Article]Horm Mol Biol Clin Investig. 2026 Oct 12. [Online ahead of print]HM
- CONCLUSIONS: Serum xenin levels were significantly higher in smokers than in non-smokers, and this difference remained significant across BMI and HOMA-IR subgroups. These findings suggest that circulating xenin may be associated with smoking-related metabolic and neuroendocrine alterations and may have potential as a candidate biomarker. Further prospective studies are needed to validate its clinical relevance.

- White matter signatures of addiction diverge across opioids, cannabis and nicotine and predict impulsive choice in cannabis dependence. [Journal Article]
- White matter (WM) microstructure is implicated in the neurobiology of substance use disorders (SUDs), yet direct comparisons across substance-dependence syndromes remain scarce. It is also unclear whether WM abnormalities relate to impulsive decision-making and substance use severity. We performed a cross-sectional, dual-centre diffusion MRI study and quantified WM microstructure using diffusion …

- Status Of GLP-1 drugs and their application in treating substance use disorders: A systematic review. [Journal Article]Dis Mon. 2026 Oct 09; :102231. [Online ahead of print]DM
- CONCLUSIONS: GLP-1RAs have good potential protective properties against SUD especially in observational research with good safety. However, robust randomized trials are needed to confirm causality and clinical applicability.

- Nicotine Administration Robustly Enhances Fentanyl-Induced Dopamine Transmission Within the Dorsal Lateral Striatum. [Journal Article]eNeuro. 2026 Oct 09. [Online ahead of print]E
- Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a prevalent public health concern in the United States. ∼70% of all drug overdose deaths are attributable to fentanyl, demonstrating a need to identify risk factors underlying the escalation of fentanyl use. Nicotine use is a risk factor associated with increased consumption of opioids across both clinical and preclinical populations. Our prior findings show that nico…

- Attitudes, beliefs, and dependence related to electronic cigarettes among medical students at an eastern Anatolian university: a cross-sectional study. [Journal Article]
- E-cigarette use has risen among young adults, and the attitudes, beliefs, and dependence of future physicians are relevant both to their own health and to their prospective role in patient counselling. This cross-sectional study assessed e-cigarette-related attitudes and beliefs, dependence among current users, and their correlates among medical students at the İnönü University Faculty of Medicin…

- Attitudinal and social factors associated with e-cigarette use among students in formal and non-formal educational settings in Chiang Mai, Thailand. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Social environmental factors, attitudes toward e-cigarettes, perceived risk/benefit of e-cigarettes, and legal awareness were associated with e-cigarette use among young people. These findings may inform evidence-based public health policies and comprehensive prevention strategies aimed at improving risk perception, modifying attitudes toward e-cigarettes, and enhancing knowledge of regulatory frameworks. Future longitudinal intervention studies are needed to evaluate the strategies' effectiveness.

- Diagnosis and Management of Nitazene Dependence in Sydney, Australia: A Case Series. [Case Reports]Drug Alcohol Rev. 2026 Nov; 45(7):e70277.DA
- CONCLUSIONS: This case series describes the diagnosis and management of nitazene dependence in metropolitan Sydney, Australia. Similar to fentanyl dependence in international literature, high doses of buprenorphine were required. Complexities included unintentional nitazene exposure through vaping, initial diagnostic confusion, delay in toxicological testing and treatment retention with local alcohol and other drug services. The management of nitazene dependence was initially complex due to diagnostic, medication and patient factors. All cases were successfully managed with either methadone or buprenorphine in the New South Wales opioid dependence treatment program. This case series describes potential management strategies for future cases of nitazene withdrawal and dependence. Public and clinician awareness is important to ensure early diagnosis and successful management.

- Combination bupropion-zonisamide facilitates rapid reduction in smoke exposure and prevents weight gain during switching to electronic nicotine delivery systems: A randomized clinical trial. [Journal Article]Drug Alcohol Depend. 2026 Oct 08; 288:113386. [Online ahead of print]DA
- CONCLUSIONS: Bupropion plus zonisamide shows promise for smoking reduction and cessation, particularly when medication adherence is maintained. Prevention of post-cessation weight gain may offer additional clinical and public health benefits. Larger trials with longer treatment duration are warranted.
