- Association between the uric acid to high‑density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and H‑type hypertension: a cross‑sectional study in Chinese adults. [Journal Article]BMC Cardiovasc Disord. 2026 Aug 05; 26(1).BC
- CONCLUSIONS: UHR is independently associated with HTH and exhibits a positive nonlinear association with the condition, with an inflection point at 0.09.

- Whole-body volatile organic compound profiling reveals metabolic pathway perturbations in a murine polymicrobial sepsis model: a feasibility study. [Journal Article]
- Sepsis rewires host metabolism, and these changes may be readable in the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from the body. Whether whole-body VOC profiles can be mapped onto specific disrupted biochemical pathways has not been tested. In this discovery-phase, single-time-point feasibility study, polymicrobial sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) in C57BL/6 mice (14 CLP,…

- Influence of hemin on biophysical properties of membranes. [Journal Article]J Biol Chem. 2026 Oct 28; :113706. [Online ahead of print]JB
- Hemin released from erythrocytes activates platelets through both receptor-dependent and receptor-independent mechanisms. While lower hemin concentrations predominantly activate the immune receptor tyrosine-based activation motif (ITAM) signaling via glycoprotein VI (GPVI) and C-type lectin-like receptor 2 (CLEC-2), higher concentrations induce pronounced receptor-independent cellular alterations…

- The Influence of Neurotic Disorders and Neurobiological Basis on Eating Behavior in a 21-Year-Old Patient: A Case Study-Diagnostic Difficulties: Is It PANDAS/PANS in Relation to an Elevated ASO Level and the Diagnosis of OCD? [Case Reports]
- Background: Anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders can co-occur with disordered eating behaviors and difficulties in emotional regulation. This article presents the clinical case of a 21-year-old female student whose complex neuropsychiatric profile required the simultaneous consideration of psychological, psychosocial, and somatic factors. The aim of this case report was to examine the coexi…

- Uric acid-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and incident vascular calcification in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a retrospective cohort study. [Journal Article]Front Endocrinol (Lausanne). 2026; 17:1964678.FE
- CONCLUSIONS: Higher UHR was associated with a greater hazard of incident coronary and/or aortic calcification in patients with T2DM. These findings extend previous cross-sectional evidence by providing longitudinal data and warrant further evaluation of UHR as a potential marker of VC risk.

- Gut Microbiota Translocation Drives the Pathogenesis of Fatty Liver Syndrome via Disrupting Hepatic Metabolic Homeostasis in Laying Hens. [Journal Article]J Nutr. 2026 Oct 26; :101902. [Online ahead of print]JN
- CONCLUSIONS: FLS progression in aged laying hens is primarily due to increased gut barrier impairment and bacterial translocation. OA supplementation improved gut barrier integrity and mitigated the occurrence of FLS in hens.

- Beyond Pigmentation: Interplay of Metabolic Profile, Carotid Intima-Media Thickness, and Fatty Liver in Vitiligo: An Age- and Sex-Matched Case-Control Study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Selected subgroups of patients with vitiligo, particularly men with HDL metabolic abnormalities, may exhibit differences in subclinical carotid atherosclerosis. Disease severity and BMI may also contribute to the vascular risk. Although exploratory, these findings warrant further investigation of cardiovascular and hepatic risk profiles in selected patients with vitiligo.

- Independent association of the CHG index with cardiometabolic multimorbidity: real-world evidence from community and clinical datasets. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Higher CHG was independently associated with prevalent CMM in hospitalized and community-dwelling middle-aged and older Chinese adults. Nonlinear associations were observed in both datasets, and no subgroup interaction remained significant after multiple-testing correction. CHG may provide a simple, accessible indicator of cardiometabolic burden, with potential value for risk stratification and population-level identification of individuals with greater cardiometabolic disease burden. Derived from routinely available laboratory measures, CHG may complement established cardiometabolic assessment and support population health and integrated chronic disease management in aging populations.

- Diabetes care goals and diabetic retinopathy in adults at tertiary hospitals, Rwanda: a cross-sectional hospital-based study. [Multicenter Study]
- CONCLUSIONS: Blood pressure monitoring and HbA1c testing were consistently performed; however, foot (19%) and dental (26%) examinations remained critically underperformed across all sites. Achievement of the three diabetes care goals glycaemic, blood pressure, and lipid control was suboptimal in a substantial proportion of patients. Oral therapy was associated with better glycaemic control than insulin alone, while longer disease duration and concomitant hypertension were independently associated with higher odds of diabetic retinopathy. These findings call for targeted systemic interventions, including mandatory integration of ophthalmology, podiatry, and dental screening into routine diabetes protocols at Rwandan tertiary facilities.

- Effects of Deltamethrin and Endosulfan on the Hepatic Markers and Neurobehavioural Alterations in Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica). [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Combined pesticide exposure induces measurable hepatotoxicity, metabolic disruption and neurobehavioural abnormalities in quail at the tested doses. These effects are consistent with DLM-mediated activation of Na+ channels and endosulfan-induced blockade of GABA_A receptors.

- Prevalence and determinants of metabolic abnormalities among adult tuberculosis patients at Gondar Town, Northwest Ethiopia: an institution-based comparative cross-sectional study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This study provides the first institution-based comparative estimate of metabolic abnormality burden among TB patients in Gondar Town, northwest Ethiopia. The overall prevalence of composite metabolic abnormality was 48.46% among TB patients and 43.85% among controls a difference that did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.455). Similarly, between-group differences in the categorical prevalence of individual conditions including hypertension, hyperglycemia, overall dyslipidemia, and central obesity did not reach statistical significance. However, TB patients exhibited statistically significant differences in key continuous biochemical parameters compared to controls including significantly higher mean triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose, and significantly lower mean HDL-cholesterol and BMI. Patients aged 45 years and above, female patients, and heavy alcohol consumers represent high-risk subgroups who should be prioritized for targeted metabolic screening. These findings provide locally grounded evidence to support the integration of lipid profile and fasting blood glucose testing into routine TB treatment follow-up within the Ethiopian national TB program, particularly at referral-level facilities in northwest Ethiopia.

- Leptin Insensitivity in NAFLD Is Produced by Oxidative Stress and Cytokine Overexpression. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Although leptin controls fat metabolism via satiety, results revealed that the overproduction of leptin might be a consequence of oxidative stress and inflammatory response to fat accumulation in the liver. Therefore, measuring leptin along with IL-6 and TNF-α might help to diagnose liver injury.

- Blood lipids as accessible biomarkers for early dementia risk screening: Bridging diagnostic gaps in resource-limited settings. [Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Circulating lipid parameters alone are insufficient as definitive diagnostic biomarkers. However, when interpreted in a population-specific and life-course context, they may contribute to early risk stratification and complement neuropsychological screening, particularly in resource-limited settings where access to advanced neuroimaging and cerebrospinal fluid testing is restricted.
