- Cow's milk consumption in childhood and adolescence: a Q&A expert review of current evidence. [Review]
- Cow's milk and its derivatives are a food group of recognized nutritional value during childhood and adolescence, and their consumption is endorsed by the main pediatric societies from 1 year of age. However, studies indicate that a significant portion of Brazilian children and adolescents do not meet the consumption recommendations, compromising the intake of essential nutrients. This expert rev…

- [Time trends in the special dietary needs of preschoolers and schoolchildren: the case of a Brazilian metropolis]. [Journal Article]Cien Saude Colet. 2026; 31(suppl 1):e07432025.CS
- This ecological study analyzed the temporal trend of special dietary needs in children aged 2 to 12 enrolled in the public school system of Belo Horizonte (MG) between 2014 and 2023. Secondary data from medical reports filed at schools, provided by the Municipal Department of Food and Nutritional Security, were used. Variables included year, gender, age, school location and type of dietary restri…

- Stabilization by Crosslinking of β-Galactosidase Immobilized by Adsorption for Application in a Continuous Lactose Removal Process. [Journal Article]Biotechnol Appl Biochem. 2026 Sep 23. [Online ahead of print]BA
- Adsorption is the simplest method of enzyme immobilization, but it often requires additional treatments to improve stability. These treatments, however, may impact enzymatic activity. This study investigated the effect of crosslinking on the stability of β-galactosidase immobilized by adsorption on A-568 resin and its implications for enzymatic activity. The immobilized enzyme was crosslinked wit…

- Calcium, Vitamin D, and Phosphorus Levels and Bone Health in Adults with Lactose Intolerance: A Systematic Review. [Journal Article]Nutr Rev. 2026 Sep 22. [Online ahead of print]NR
- CONCLUSIONS: Given inconsistent evidence across studies, chronically low calcium intake in LI may be associated with, but not definitively causal for, adverse bone outcomes. Our findings support ensuring sufficient calcium intake and highlighting the need for prospective studies.

- CRISPR-Cas9 engineering for high-level β-galactosidase production in Saccharomyces boulardii. [Journal Article]Microbiol Res. 2026 Sep 15; 314:128734. [Online ahead of print]MR
- Saccharomyces boulardii is a clinically validated probiotic yeast widely used to treat gastrointestinal disorders. Its natural probiotic effects, combined with the capacity of surviving the harsh gastrointestinal conditions, makes it an attractive chassis for therapeutic protein delivery. However, its engineering has relied on a limited set of genetic tools and lacks systematic validation, which …

- Genotype-Specific Clinical Response to a Lactose-Free Diet in Adult Patients Evaluated for Lactose Intolerance: Implications for Clinical Assessment. [Journal Article]
- Background: Lactose intolerance is a common gastrointestinal condition with variable clinical expression, often requiring both clinical and genetic evaluation. While genetic testing identifies genetic predisposition to lactase persistence or non-persistence, the relationship between specific LCT genotypes and clinical response to dietary intervention remains incompletely understood. Aim: To asses…

- Lactose sensitivity and malabsorption in functional dyspepsia and functional dyspepsia-irritable bowel syndrome overlap. [Journal Article]Digestion. 2026 Sep 07; :1. [Online ahead of print]D
- CONCLUSIONS: Lactose sensitivity, not malabsorption, was closely associated with symptom burden in patients with functional dyspepsia. Functional dyspepsia-irritable bowel syndrome overlap was linked to amplified burden, underscoring the importance of validated symptom assessment alongside breath testing for diagnostic precision.

- Nutritional characteristics of patients with dry mouth and/or Sjögren disease in a Hungarian cohort. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: As a primary outcome of this study, the nutrition of patients with dry mouth and/or SD generally does not differ from the diet of healthy persons, and it is determined by local traditions and availability. The number of daily meals and the pattern of fluid consumption do not vary significantly because of sicca symptoms or SD. A higher incidence of food allergy was reported in patients with dry mouth and/or SD. Affected patients tend to prefer easily swallowable, non-irritant, softer (rice), or high-water content foods such as tomato and paprika, or cold cuts. Patients with dry mouth and/or SD need conscious dietary advice from their family practitioners, dentists, or specialists to alleviate their symptoms, while trustworthy websites and social media may serve as important sources of health information.

- Polyelectrolyte Microcapsules Enhance the Stability of β-Galactosidase Under Simulated Gastrointestinal Conditions. [Journal Article]
- Oral enzyme replacement therapy for lactase deficiency is limited by the rapid degradation of free β-galactosidase in the gastrointestinal tract. To overcome this, β-galactosidase was encapsulated into polyelectrolyte microcapsules (PMCs) via layer-by-layer assembly using MnCO3 sacrificial templates, with CaCO3-based PMCs as a reference. MnCO3-PMCs achieved 99.4% encapsulation efficiency and reta…
