- Use of sole-agent ketamine sedation to facilitate laryngoscopy and foreign body removal in acute supraglottic airway obstruction. [Journal Article]Anaesth Rep. 2026 Jul-Dec; 14(2):e70112.AR
- A 78-year-old man presented with stridor and dysphonia after choking at home. He deteriorated, with respiratory distress and an oxygen saturation of 55% despite oxygen via a non-rebreather mask. Flexible nasendoscopy demonstrated a food bolus between the epiglottis and glottis. The team judged apnoea and assisted positive-pressure ventilation before extraction to be hazardous, while deterioration…

- Critical airway obstruction associated with extensive subglottic inflammatory slough and oedema following severe acute respiratory syndrome SARS-CoV-2 infection in a child. [Case Reports]BMJ Case Rep. 2026 Sep 18; 19(9).BC
- SARS-CoV-2 infection in children is typically mild, although COVID-19-associated croup can be severe. We report a patient in middle childhood with impending critical airway obstruction due to severe subglottic oedema and extensive inflammatory slough/crusting following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Subsequent airway assessment in the operating theatre revealed critical subglottic narrowing. During transp…

- Out‑of‑hospital cardiac arrest from foreign body airway obstruction: a population‑based study in Victoria, Australia. [Journal Article]Resuscitation. 2026 Sep 14; :111309. [Online ahead of print]R
- CONCLUSIONS: OHCA due to FBAO is associated with extremely poor survival, particularly in patients aged over 65 years. The findings emphasise the critical importance of prompt bystander intervention and the need for evidence-informed EMS interventions and assessment of futility.

- A Pediatric Case of Esophageal Foreign Body Removal Facilitated by Structured Briefing and Shared Visualization Using a Video Laryngoscope. [Case Reports]
- Foreign body ingestion is a common pediatric emergency, and coins are among the most frequently ingested objects. When a coin becomes lodged at the pharyngoesophageal junction, prompt removal is required to avoid perforation, mucosal injury, and airway compromise. We report the case of a five-year-old boy with a coin impacted in the upper esophagus at the level of the cricopharyngeus, successfull…

- Direct-Vision Removal of an Impacted Esophageal Padlock in a 7-year-Old at a Resource-Limited Facility: A Case Report. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights the importance of pragmatic clinical judgment and adaptive decision making in low-resource settings. When standard endoscopic services are unavailable, carefully selected alternative approaches can save life.

- Bougie facilitated Minnesota tube placement for control of massive gastrointestinal hemorrhage. [Case Reports]Am J Emerg Med. 2026 Aug 05; 110:51-53. [Online ahead of print]AJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Difficult placement of a Minnesota tube may be addressed by placing the coudé tip of a bougie into the distal eyelet and advancing the devices in tandem into proper position. This may be associated with less risk of trauma than the use of stiffened wires as previously described.

- Dental dislodgement during oral and maxillofacial surgery is an uncommon, but potentially serious complication. We report a case of intraoperative tooth loss with asymptomatic supraglottic retention during oral surgery under general anesthesia. A 55-year-old man underwent bilateral maxillary endoscopic sinus surgery (MESS) under general anesthesia. A severely mobile mandibular tooth was missing d…

- Iatrogenic Dental Trauma During Airway Management: A Case Report and Review of Preventive Strategies. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Jun; 18(6):e110325.C
- Dental trauma is a recognized complication of airway management during general anesthesia, particularly in patients with poor dentition. Dislodged teeth pose a significant risk of airway obstruction, aspiration, and subsequent pulmonary complications, with important medico-legal implications. We report the case of a 45-year-old male with multiple loose and missing teeth, scheduled for an uncement…

- Does Use of a Soft Endotracheal Tube Reduce Epistaxis During Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Procedures? [Randomized Controlled Trial]J Oral Maxillofac Surg. 2026 Oct; 84(10):1556-1562.JO
- CONCLUSIONS: Spiral NETs were associated with reduced epistaxis frequency and facilitated NTI compared with RAE tubes.

- The youngest reported oropharyngeal leech infestation: severe anemia without airway obstruction in a 6-month-old Ethiopian infant: a case report. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: In environments with limited resources, this case highlights the importance of preventing such rare but dangerous infestations by improving water sanitation, adhering to safe feeding practices, and quickly suspecting parasitic causes in infants exhibiting unexplained bleeding.

- Determination of Optimal Magill Forceps Hand Position and Laryngoscope Type to Remove a Simulated Foreign Body Airway Obstruction. [Randomized Controlled Trial]West J Emerg Med. 2026 May 18; 27(3):709-714.WJ
- CONCLUSIONS: We found that hand positioning for Magill forceps significantly affected time to foreign body removal. In addition, direct laryngoscopy outperformed hyperangulated video laryngoscopy. Given these findings, training on removal of foreign body airway obstruction with Magill forceps should emphasize optimal hand positioning. Paramedics may also consider the use of direct laryngoscopy over hyperangulated video laryngoscopy in removal of these obstructions. Further research is required to validate these findings.

- Adjunctive Maneuvers for Glottic Entry During Pediatric Nasotracheal Intubation: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study. [Journal Article]J Clin Med. 2026 May 01; 15(9).JC
- Background/Objectives: Pediatric nasotracheal intubation may remain difficult at the stage of glottic alignment and laryngeal entry even after passage through the nasal cavity. We aimed to describe the distribution of adjunctive maneuvers required for glottic entry during pediatric nasotracheal intubation and to explore factors associated with their use. Methods: We conducted a prospective observ…

- Uncommon cause of airway obstruction and hypovolemic shock: pharyngeal leech infestation in a rural Ethiopian child. [Case Reports]
- Leech infestation of the upper airway is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening condition, especially among children living in rural areas with limited access to safe drinking water. Early recognition and intervention are crucial to prevent severe complications such as airway obstruction and profound anemia. We present the case of an 8-year-old boy from rural North Gondar, Ethiopia, who arr…

- Effectiveness of indirect versus direct laryngoscopes for nasotracheal intubation in adults undergoing elective surgery: a systematic review and network meta-analysis. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: In the present NMA to establish a ranking of the effectiveness of intubation devices in patients undergoing nasotracheal intubation, we found that most indirect laryngoscopes likely reduced intubation time, increased first-attempt success rates, and were more effective tracheal intubation devices for nasotracheal intubation compared with direct laryngoscopes The findings of the present a systematic review and NMA support a recommendation for the use of indirect laryngoscopes for nasotracheal intubation (very low certainty of evidence).
