- Motion-Preserving Salvage for Failed Total Ankle Arthroplasty or Talar AVN: Outcomes of Combined Total Ankle Arthroplasty with Custom 3D-Printed Total Talus Replacement. [Journal Article]Foot Ankle Int. 2026 Sep 10; :10711007261471856. [Online ahead of print]FA
- CONCLUSIONS: TAA-TTR represents a viable motion-preserving procedure in this challenging population. Although patients achieved relatively rapid functional recovery and transition to regular footwear, rigorous selection remains key. This approach demonstrates a manageable complication rate while addressing tibiotalar and subtalar pathology simultaneously.

- Nationwide evaluation of late diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip and avascular necrosis after treatment: Insights from the JPOA registry. [Journal Article]J Orthop Sci. 2026 Aug 28. [Online ahead of print]JO
- CONCLUSIONS: The late diagnosis of DDH remains prevalent in Japan. Strengthening the implementation of the recommended screening/referral criteria may reduce delayed diagnoses. AVN was independently associated with the reduction method, underscoring the importance of early detection and appropriate treatment selection to minimize complications.

- Artificial Intelligence Applications in MRI for the Diagnosis and Management of Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head: A Comprehensive Review. [Review]
- Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a progressive and potentially disabling condition caused by compromised blood supply to the femoral head, leading to bone necrosis and collapse. Early diagnosis is essential to enable joint-preserving interventions and improve patient outcomes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is currently considered the most sensitive modality for early detection, wher…

- How Do Occupational Balance, Activity Performance, and Quality of Life Differ in Avascular Necrosis? [Journal Article]Occup Ther Health Care. 2026 Aug 14; :1-18. [Online ahead of print]OT
- Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a musculoskeletal condition characterized by pain, mobility limitations, and functional decline, that may restrict daily participation. This cross-sectional study investigated occupational balance, activity performance and satisfaction, and quality of life in 32 individuals with AVN and 31 healthy controls. Participants completed the Occupational Balance Questionnaire,…

- Effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on human musculoskeletal pathologies in clinical studies: a systematic review. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: HBOT may have a role as an adjunctive therapy for musculoskeletal pathologies, especially AVN and BME, where the most consistent evidence was observed, while its benefit in ligament injuries, muscle recovery, and tendon pathology remains inconclusive and requires higher-quality trials to substantiate.

- Idiopathic Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head in an Older Adult: A Case Report. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Jul; 18(7):e112084.C
- Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head is a rare but serious cause of hip pain, often presenting with non-specific symptoms that can be mistaken for more common musculoskeletal conditions. We report the case of a 65-year-old Asian male, a retired taxi driver without traditional AVN risk factors, who presented with a three-month history of progressive right hip pain - characterized as a dull…

- [Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head after Hodgkin Lymphoma Treatment: Analysis of Risk Factors and Mid-Term Outcomes after Total Hip Replacement]. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: THR is a causal treatment of symptomatic AVN FH following cHL treatment. Age ≥ 50 years, MC subtype cHL, and AVN FH stages 3 and 4 were associated with a higher risk of THR. The mean MHHS was fully comparable with THRs for other indications. Higher calcification rates had no impact on the clinical outcome.

- Impact of COVID-19 on the Development of Femoral Head Avascular Necrosis: A Systematic Review. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Femoral head AVN is an emerging post-COVID complication with variable timing and presentation. Corticosteroid exposure remains the principal risk factor; whether COVID-19 contributes independently of corticosteroids is unproven, and current evidence supports an association rather than a causal relationship. Awareness of this potential complication is warranted, although the role of early MRI screening remains to be established in prospective studies.

- Expert Consensus on Vascular Assessment and Treatment Strategies for Adult Femoral Neck Fractures. [Journal Article]Ann Plast Surg. 2026 Aug 01; 97(2):246-255.AP
- This article presents an expert consensus on vascular assessment and management strategies for adult femoral neck fractures, based on a narrative review of current evidence and the collective clinical experience of a multidisciplinary panel of orthopaedic and reconstructive surgeons. To assist clinicians in accurately evaluating the vascular status of the femoral head and formulating individualiz…

- The experience of stemmed pyrocarbon shoulder hemiarthroplasty in New Zealand : ten years of registry data. [Journal Article]Bone Joint J. 2026 Jun 01; 108-B(6):787-792.BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The use of PyCHA is increasing in New Zealand. It is typically used in younger patients with OA. It has good clinical outcomes and low revision rates at mid-term follow-up. Further study is needed to assess the ideal indications for this procedure and the long-term clinical outcomes and revision rates.

- CONCLUSIONS: The cartilage fenestration approach combined with artificial bone implantation is a safe and effective minimally invasive treatment for CHCFE in children, offering thorough tumor clearance, significant functional improvement, and low rates of recurrence and AVN. However, lateral involvement of the femoral head indicates a relatively poor prognosis, requiring more meticulous surgical planning and postoperative rehabilitation to optimize outcomes.

- BACKGROUND Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a disabling musculoskeletal complication of sickle cell disease (SCD), resulting from recurrent vaso-occlusive episodes and chronic microvascular ischemia. Although weight-bearing joints such as the femoral head are most commonly affected, humeral head involvement can lead to significant pain and functional limitation. Management of AVN in SCD remains challe…

- Open reduction and internal fixation vs acute total hip arthroplasty for geriatric acetabular fractures: A multicenter matched cohort study. [Multicenter Study]Injury. 2026 Jun; 57(6):113265.I
- CONCLUSIONS: In this study, ORIF was associated with higher early mortality and systemic complications, whereas acute THA was associated with higher implant-related complications. Despite these differing complication profiles, cumulative reoperation rates were similar through long-term follow-up. Progressive PTOA and conversion to THA remain important sequelae after ORIF.

- Outcomes and classification of total talus replacements. [Multicenter Study]
- CONCLUSIONS: TTR can be used for patients with destruction of the talus to relieve pain and to improve both function and activity. Patients having surgery for an elective indication appear to improve more than those whose replacement follows trauma. Constrained implants produced similar results to fully articulating implants. It is a technically difficult procedure and as the numbers which are undertaken increases, standardized terminology must be used in further prospective follow-up.
