  • Beyond Kratom: Concentrated 7-Hydroxymitragynine and Mitragynine Pseudoindoxyl Products, an MME Potency Assessment. [Journal Article]
    Regul Toxicol Pharmacol. 2026 Oct 06; :106272. [Online ahead of print]Heywood J, Farnham H, … Riordan ART
  • Traditional kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) products consist of botanical leaf derivatives dominated by mitragynine, with minimal 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) or mitragynine pseudoindoxyl content. Kratom-branded products containing concentrated 7-OH and mitragynine pseudoindoxyl have proliferated since 2024 and are pharmacologically distinct from and more potent than mitragynine at the μ-opioid recept…
  • Patient Perspectives on Offers of Buprenorphine in the Emergency Department. [Journal Article]
JAMA Netw Open. 2026 Oct 01; 9(10):e2637671.Jennings LK, Barth K, … Moreland AJN
  • CONCLUSIONS: In this mixed-methods qualitative study of adult ED patients with OUD who were offered buprenorphine, declination was driven less by low treatment readiness than by specific, addressable concerns: precipitated withdrawal, physical dependence, and housing and logistical barriers. Targeted interventions addressing these concerns may increase uptake of this life-saving treatment.
  • Comparing the pain relief effectiveness of intravenous magnesium sulfate and ketorolac versus intravenous morphine and ketorolac for kidney stones. [Journal Article]
J Educ Health Promot. 2026; 15:377.Bagher Sheydaei MF, Baghernezhad AR, … Rezaei FJE
  • CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study demonstrate that intravenous magnesium sulfate, in combination with ketorolac, is as effective as morphine-based regimens in managing acute renal colic pain. Given the current global health policies emphasizing opioid stewardship and the reduction of opioid-related adverse effects, magnesium sulfate emerges as a valuable, low-risk alternative. Its incorporation into emergency pain management protocols may not only reduce opioid dependency and misuse but also align with broader public health goals aimed at promoting safer and more sustainable pain relief strategies. Health policymakers should consider including non-opioid analgesics like magnesium sulfate in national and institutional guidelines for acute pain management, especially in settings where opioid overuse presents a clinical and social challenge.
