- Development and Validation of a Simultaneous RP-HPLC Method for the Estimation of Ferrous Fumarate and Ascorbic Acid for Pharmaceutical Quality Control. [Journal Article]
- Our aim was to develop an accurate, precise, and reliable RP-HPLC method for estimating ferrous fumarate and ascorbic acid in pro-liposomes. The aim was to make the analytical method simple, environmentally friendly, and accurate. To measure ferrous fumarate (FF) and ascorbic acid (AA), an isocratic method was used in an HPLC, with 220 and 245 nm detection, using phosphate buffer (pH 3.0) and met…

- Cost analysis of returned medicines at the outpatient pharmacy of a Malaysian state hospital. [Journal Article]Med J Malaysia. 2026 Sep; 81(5):639-643.MJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Returned medicines lead to significant financial losses from both medication wastage and disposal for public providers. Shorter refill durations, medication adherence support, deprescribing and controls on highvalue ABC group A items could reduce wastage.
- Preclinical perspectives on common iron fortificants and their bioavailability in rat models: a systematic review and meta-analysis. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: The meta-analysis results suggest that both NaFeEDTA and ferrous fumarate are effective in improving Hb concentration.

- Vitamin D Supplementation Enhances Hematologic Recovery in Vitamin D-Deficient Adults with Iron Deficiency Anemia. [Journal Article]J Nutr. 2026 Sep 15; :101832. [Online ahead of print]JN
- CONCLUSIONS: VD deficiency was associated with a reduced hematologic response to iron-containing micronutrient supplementation for IDA. In participants with VD deficiency, adjunctive VD supplementation in combination with the iron-containing micronutrient supplement significantly enhanced hematologic recovery compared with the iron-containing micronutrient supplement alone. These findings suggest that optimizing VD status may improve treatment outcomes in IDA.

- Polysaccharide iron complex ingestions reported to a regional poison centre: a retrospective review 2011-2023. [Journal Article]Clin Toxicol (Phila). 2026 Jul 21; :1-9. [Online ahead of print]CT
- CONCLUSIONS: Polysaccharide iron complex appears to have low toxicity, suggesting that poison centres may consider modifying recommendations to reflect the lower toxicity potential for polysaccharide iron complex ingestions.

- Iron Complexes With Proteins, Carbohydrates, and Maillard Products in Dairy Systems: Implication for Fortification, Bioavailability, and Product Functionality. [Review]
- The global prevalence of iron (Fe) deficiency anemia (IDA) continues to pose major public health challenges, necessitating the development of effective fortification strategies. Dairy-based systems are promising vehicles for Fe fortification and delivery due to their widespread consumption and nutritional value, although their complex matrix presents significant challenges for maintaining Fe bioa…

- Clinical Trial: Predicting Response to Iron Therapy in Patients With Active Inflammatory Bowel Disease Using Hepcidin and Functional Iron Indices: A Multicentre Randomised Trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: Baseline hepcidin supports route selection for iron therapy: higher levels favour IV iron, while lower levels indicate likely oral response. Ferritin-based indices, notably transferrin/log10(ferritin), offer pragmatic alternatives where hepcidin testing is unavailable.

- Bioavailability of Sodium Iron Ethylenediaminetetraacetate, Ferrous Fumarate, and Ferrous Sulfate in Corn Flour Using Different INFOGEST Digestion and Caco-2 Cell Model Methods. [Journal Article]Curr Dev Nutr. 2026 May; 10(5):107686.CD
- CONCLUSIONS: The Caco-2 cell model with Glahn's dual-chamber system and INFOGEST digesta was the best treatment and chamber system. NaFeEDTA had significantly higher bioavailability than FeSO4, but not ferrous fumarate. The combination of NaFeEDTA and FeSO4 at a 2:11 weight ratio was the most promising iron treatment ratio.

- Effects of Quintuply-Fortified Salt on the Micronutrient Status of Children 12 to 59 Months of Age in Punjab, India: Results from a Randomized, Community-Based, Household Trial. [Randomized Controlled Trial]
- CONCLUSIONS: Preschool children consuming QFS for 12 mo demonstrated greater improvements in vitamin B-12 and folate status compared with children consuming IS. QFS may be a useful vehicle to address micronutrient deficiencies, especially vitamin B-12 and folate, in this population.

- Formulation and characterization of agar-chia gum coated niosomes for controlled ferrous fumarate release. [Journal Article]Food Chem. 2026 Jun 30; 515:149182.FC
- Iron deficiency remains a global nutritional challenge, requiring stable and efficient delivery systems for fortification. This study aimed to develop a novel carrier by encapsulating ferrous fumarate-loaded niosomes within a hydrogel matrix composed of agar and chia seed gum (CSG). The niosomes exhibited a uniformity (PDI < 0.22) and negative surface charge (<-23 mV), ensuring electrostatic stab…

- Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed): Iron Salts [BOOK]Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed). National Library of Medicine (US): Bethesda (MD).BOOK
- Iron is a normal component in human milk. Daily oral iron intake from prenatal vitamins or other multimineral supplements does not affect milk iron levels. Higher daily oral iron dosing has a minimal effect on milk iron levels and is not expected to cause harm to the breastfed infant if needed to treat the mother’s anemia, but it is not an adequate substitute for direct infant iron supplementatio…
- Beyond Iron Solubility: Particle Size as a Determinant of Cell Survival and Iron-Induced COX-2 Expression in Human Intestinal Cells. [Journal Article]
- Background: Oral iron supplementation or food fortification is essential for managing or preventing iron deficiency but often causes gastrointestinal side effects. While solubility has traditionally been considered a requirement for iron uptake via the DMT1 transporter, recent evidence shows that insoluble iron can also be absorbed through endocytosis, raising questions about particle size and ep…

- Oral iron preparations: gastrointestinal adverse events and medication adherence in female patients with iron deficiency anemia. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Gastrointestinal AEs are not a key factor affecting medication adherence. Reducing patients' medication concerns, improving the doctor-patient relationship and reinforcing counseling to avoid premature medication withdrawal due to elevated hemoglobin levels are beneficial to enhancing medication adherence in female IDA patients.
