  • Mitral valve regurgitation and emotional dysregulation secondary to long-standing Graves' thyrotoxicosis. [Journal Article]

  • CONCLUSIONS: Graves' disease is common, with an estimated prevalence of 0.2-2% and multiple associated complications. We present a case of severe mitral regurgitation secondary to poorly controlled Graves' disease for 11 years, highlighting the need for definitive treatment. A 30-year-old female attended hospital with palpitations, agitation and generalised pain. Her past medical history included Graves' disease diagnosed in 2014, with poor compliance and engagement with secondary care and medical treatment. Biochemical investigations and clinical examination confirmed thyrotoxicosis (TSH < 0.05 mIU/L, free T3 > 30.72 pmol/L and free T4 34.7 pmol/L). Carbimazole 40 mg once daily and propranolol 40 mg three times daily were restarted. She later developed worsening dyspnoea, attributed to decompensated heart failure. An echocardiogram showed severe mitral regurgitation secondary to anterior mitral valve prolapse. She also displayed psychiatric abnormalities, including anxiety and anger outbursts. Multiple conversations were thus needed with the patient, her family and the multidisciplinary team regarding treatment options, and an inpatient thyroidectomy was agreed upon. She recovered well postoperatively and is awaiting mitral valve repair. Our case highlights two crucial complications occurring secondary to long-standing uncontrolled Graves' thyrotoxicosis: mitral valve regurgitation with heart failure and neuropsychiatric complications with an impact on capacity for treatment decisions. We emphasise the complex support needed for these vulnerable patients to prevent end-stage complications of Graves' disease.
  • Safety assessment of ambrisentan based on the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System. [Journal Article]
    Medicine (Baltimore). 2026 Oct 02; 105(40):e50893.Dan Y, Xu G, … Hu BM
  • Ambrisentan is an endothelin receptor antagonist broadly used for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. However, multiple adverse events (AEs) were reported with its use, and we intended to evaluate potential ambrisentan-associated AE signals through the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System. Reports from March 2019 to December 2022 were selected for dispropor…
  • An Unexpected Association of a Novel MYOF Variant with Generalized Myopathy and HAE-nl-C1-INH. [Case Reports]
    Iran J Allergy Asthma Immunol. 2026 Aug 12; 25(Sup 11):205-210.Alizadeh Z, Alirezaee A, … Pourpak ZIJ
  • Myoferlin (encoded by MYOF) is a highly expressed protein in myoblasts and endothelial cells; mutations in MYOF are linked to malignancies, skeletal and cardiac myopathy, and hereditary angioedema with normal C1-inhibitor (HAE-nl-C1-INH). We present a 31- year-old female with recurrent severe abdominal angioedema attacks since late childhood. Mucocutaneous angioedema attacks began in early adoles…
  • Craving and the body: Sensations of cue-elicited craving in binge drinking university students. [Journal Article]
    Addiction. 2026 Oct 02. [Online ahead of print]Billaux P, Desmedt O, … Maurage PA
  • CONCLUSIONS: Among binge drinkers, craving does not appear to be exclusively a psychological phenomenon but also encompasses various and strong bodily sensations. Bodily craving for alcohol encompasses both positive sensations resembling those felt when experiencing pleasurable acute alcohol effects (e.g. relaxation/ease in upper parts of the body) but also negative ones close to those reported in alcohol withdrawal (e.g. tremors, perspiration).
  • Genes Do Not Read DSM: Tuberous Sclerosis Complex May Dominate with Multi-Neuropsychiatric Symptoms. [Journal Article]
Harv Rev Psychiatry. 2026 Sep 25. [Online ahead of print]Lü W, Sun L, … Kuang WHR
  • Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem genetic disorder frequently accompanied by epilepsy and TSC-associated neuropsychiatric disorders. Psychiatric-predominant seizure presentations may, however, delay recognition. This clinical challenge describes a 26-year-old woman with recurrent panic-like episodes characterized by dyspnea, choking sensations, palpitations, and derealization, fol…
