- 2026 Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) Strategy Report: Executive Summary and Key Changes. [Journal Article]Am J Respir Crit Care Med. 2026 Oct 08. [Online ahead of print]AJ
- The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) Strategy Report provides a comprehensive, annually updated evidence-based approach to asthma diagnosis, assessment, treatment, and prevention across the lifespan. Its central approach is personalized, iterative care based on the Assess-Adjust-Review cycle for both symptom control and reduction of future risk (including severe exacerbations, persistent airfl…

- Assessing the Impact of Earlier Initiation of Biologics on Clinical Remission and Other Outcomes in a Global Real-Life Severe Asthma Cohort From CHRONICLE, the International Severe Asthma Registry, and the Optimum Patient Care Research Database. [Journal Article]Chest. 2026 Sep 09. [Online ahead of print]Chest
- CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that earlier initiation of biologics in individuals with SA is associated with better clinical outcomes, suggesting the need to modify approaches to asthma management from a reserve to a preserve approach, that is, not reserving biologics for those with long-standing SA, and instead preserving patient lung function and possibly increasing the likelihood of better clinical outcomes with earlier biologic initiation.

- Association of Easier Biologic Access with Remission and Other Clinical Outcomes in Severe Asthma: A Global Real-World Study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Easier access to biologics for patients with SA, a prerequisite for shorter time-to-initiation, was associated with a greater probability of achieving clinical remission and other favorable asthma outcomes. Initiating biologics earlier in the asthma disease course may help unlock greater therapeutic potential in SA. These findings warrant confirmation in additional studies to further establish the causal relationship between biologic accessibility, timing of initiation, and clinical outcomes in SA.

- Nanoparticles as an efficient strategy to eliminate senescent brain endothelial cells. [Journal Article]J Control Release. 2026 Sep 10; 397:115174.JC
- The blood-brain barrier (BBB) experiences dysfunction during physiological aging, potentially leading to cognitive decline and the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. Recent research highlights brain endothelial cell (BEC) senescence as a key factor contributing to BBB impairment. In this study, polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with a senolytic agent - Navitoclax - were designed to selective…

- Extracellular matrix-associated molecules of senescent cells induce a senescence phenotype in proliferative cells via TGF-β signaling pathway. [Journal Article]Biomaterials. 2026 Oct; 333:124117.B
- Senescent cells accumulate in various tissues as we age and are characterized by growth arrest and a senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). This phenotype involves the release of various factors, such as pro-inflammatory molecules, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and extracellular vesicles (EVs), which can trigger senescence in neighboring cells. However, it remains unclear whether non-s…

- Peak flow meter is a sensitive test for assessing airflow limitation in patients with respiratory symptoms suggestive of asthma in primary health care in Brazil. [Journal Article]
- BACKGROUND: The peak flow meter is considered a complementary tool to spirometry for monitoring obstructive lung diseases. In many countries, spirometry is not easily accessible for diagnosing asthma in primary care. In this context, there has been growing interest in evaluating the role of the peak expiratory flow meter (PEFM) for asthma management, particularly in primary care settings. This st…

- The definition of asthma remission in children: A scoping review by the WAO Paediatric Asthma Committee. [Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Current definitions of asthma remission in paediatric populations are predominantly symptom-based, with limited inclusion of objective physiological measures. Establishing consensus-based definitions for remission tailored to paediatric populations is essential to ensure clinical relevance and alignment with real-world disease patterns.

- Pharmacological clearance of senescent cells reduces inflammation, endothelial damage and cardiac fibrosis in HFpEF. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: ZSF1-Obese rats had increased immune and endothelial senescent cells in their peripheral blood and myocardium, together with exacerbated systemic inflammation and endothelial damage, compared to control ZSF1-Lean rats. Moreover, increased circulating senescent leucocytes were associated with markers of disease severity in patients with HFpEF. Senescent cell clearance decreased circulating B-type natriuretic peptide levels and attenuated inflammation, vascular remodelling, and cardiac fibrosis. Additionally, it improved renal function and reduced pulmonary oedema. Our findings suggest that senotherapeutics may improve the treatment for HFpEF by attenuating systemic effects of the disease whilst reducing cardiac fibrosis and endothelial rarefaction.

- Telemedicine outcome of mechanically ventilated children in Brazilian pediatric intensive care units. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of telemedicine in public PICUs significantly reduced mortality and increased VFD among MV patients. These findings support telemedicine as a viable and promising strategy for enhancing pediatric critical care in public health systems, thereby contributing to improved patient outcomes.

- Baseline characteristics of patients from the Brazilian Severe Asthma Registry: the REBRAG study. [Multicenter Study]
- CONCLUSIONS: Severe asthma in Brazil still results in a high disease burden, with less than half of the patients receiving treatment with biologics and clinical remission being achieved in a subgroup of patients treated with biologics for more than 12 months. Achieving disease control remains a major clinical and health care challenge, requiring further actions from specialists and health care providers, as well as additional studies.

- Response to Biologics Along a Gradient of T2 Involvement in Patients With Severe Asthma: A Data-Driven Biomarker Clustering Approach. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: T2-targeting biologics have utility in the management of asthma with low T2 involvement, but more effective therapies are needed. Further research is warranted to identify specific pathogenic pathways at the lower end of the T2 spectrum that can be effectively targeted by biologics.

- CONCLUSIONS: Empowering the multidisciplinary healthcare team on asthma management at a national level in the PHC centers, while addressing the substantial burden of asthma in Brazil, holds the potential to reduce asthma hospitalization rates in alignment with global health priorities, ultimately reducing direct public health costs.

- Biomarker profile and disease burden associated with intermittent and long-term oral corticosteroid use in patients with severe asthma prior to biologic initiation in real-life (STAR). [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: OCS, whether prescribed intermittently or long term, affect BEC distribution potentially leading to heightened risk of phenotype misclassification and influencing subsequent treatment decisions. FeNO appears to be less susceptible to OCS-induced suppression. Disease burden was high for those in the LTOCS group and was high independent of dose and BEC. Our findings highlight the importance of considering OCS use, even intermittent use, when characterizing SA, and suggests the need for earlier phenotyping and alternative treatment strategies for LTOCS patients with low BEC.
