- Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed): Cholestyramine [BOOK]Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed). National Library of Medicine (US): Bethesda (MD).BOOK
- Cholestyramine is a nonabsorbable resin. Because it does not enter the mother's bloodstream, it will not reach the infant via breastmilk. It is acceptable for use during lactation.
- Refractory Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy in Twin Gestation Managed With Ursodeoxycholic Acid and Adjunctive Cholestyramine: A Case Report. [Case Reports]
- Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a liver disorder which is characterized by pruritus and elevated bile acids during pregnancy and is further coupled with higher maternal and fetal risks. We report a rare case of early-onset, refractory ICP with elevated liver enzymes in a 25-year-old primigravida with a monochorionic diamniotic twin gestation complicated by selective fetal growth re…

- The long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide brodifacoum induces neuropathology in adult New Zealand White rabbits and is reduced by the bile sequestrant cholestyramine. [Journal Article]
- Previous studies showed that exposure to long-acting anticoagulant rodenticides (LAARs) can induce neuropathology in adult rats. In the current study we tested if the potent LAAR brodifacoum similarly promoted neuropathology in adult rabbits which provide a better model of human LAAR poisoning. Adult male New Zealand White rabbits were administered by gavage a single administration of brodifacoum…

- Variation in microbiome and metabolites is associated with advantageous effects of cholestyramine on primary biliary cholangitis with pruritus. [Journal Article]
- Emerging evidence implicates bile acid-intestinal microbiota interactions in the pathogenesis of pruritus associated with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). Cholestyramine, a bile acid sequestrant, is clinically recommended for pruritus alleviation. This study investigates its regulatory effects on gut microbiome composition and metabolite profiles. A prospective cohort of 54 pruritic PBC patient…

- Efficacy and Safety of Adjunctive Bile Acid Sequestrant Therapy for Thyrotoxicosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials. [Systematic Review]Thyroid. 2026 Jan; 36(1):17-24.T
- CONCLUSIONS: Adjunctive bile acid sequestrants with standard hyperthyroidism therapy appear to enhance reductions in serum total T3 and free T4 at the mark of four weeks and were well tolerated. However, due to considerable heterogeneity and low quality of evidence, our results should be interpreted with caution. Larger, high-quality RCTs are needed to strengthen the evidence regarding the efficacy of adjunctive bile acid sequestrant therapy.

- Sex differences in bile acid homeostasis and excretion underlie the disparity in liver cancer incidence between males and females. [Journal Article]
- Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the common liver cancer, exhibits higher incidence in males. Here, we report that mice lacking bile acid (BA) regulators, Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR also termed NR1H4) and Small Heterodimer Partner (SHP also termed NR0B2), recapitulate the sex difference in liver cancer risk. Since few therapeutic options are available, we focused on understanding the intrinsic prot…

- Local Interactions Between Innate Immune Signaling, Microbiota, and Bile Acids Drive the Development of Duodenal Adenomas. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Bile acids and the microbiota are necessary for duodenal adenoma development and are potentially modifiable risk factors in humans at risk of duodenal adenomas. The recruitment of myeloid cells may promote tumor progression via the release of reactive oxygen species.

- Efficacy of binders on sequestering per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances under in vitro ruminal conditions. [Journal Article]J Dairy Sci. 2026 Jan; 109(1):469-481.JD
- The efficacy of 6 binders in sequestering perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) under in vitro ruminal conditions was evaluated. Binders, including bentonite, montmorillonite aluminum pillared clay, chitosan, activated charcoal Norit, and cholestyramine resin (CHM), were tested at a dose of 1.8% (wt/wt; fresh basis). The PFOS (%) binding affinity of binders was calculated in relation to the contro…

- Bile Acid Binding Resins Improve Glucagon Receptor Agonist-Mediated Weight Loss in Diet-Induced Obese Mice. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Together, these studies suggest that BARs enhance the antiobesity effect of GCGR agonism in DIO mice, representing a novel antiobesity strategy.

- Orally administered cholestyramine increases fecal bile acid excretion in healthy dogs. [Journal Article]Am J Vet Res. 2025 Dec 01; 86(12).AJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Cholestyramine increased the total fecal BA excretion in colony dogs and had little to no clinical effect on the DI.

- Management of Type 2 Amiodarone-Induced Thyrotoxicosis With a Combination of Low-Dose Prednisone and Bile Acid Resin to Attain Euthyroid State. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: In patients with type 2 AIT and relative contraindication to high-dose steroids, a combination of moderately low-dose prednisone and bile acid binding resins offers a safe and effective treatment alternative.

- Serum, urinary and fecal concentrations of perfluoroalkyl substances after interventions with cholestyramine/colesevelam and probenecid - cross-over trials in Ronneby, Sweden. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Bile acid sequestrants could be used for accelerating PFAS excretion in highly PFAS exposed individuals. Studies are needed to evaluate the risks, costs and benefits of using it for this purpose.

- Management of bile acid diarrhea in Italy: a survey. [Journal Article]
- Bile acid diarrhea (BAD) is a common, under-investigated cause of chronic diarrhea. We aimed to assess the current management of BAD among a group of Italian physicians. A survey was developed by a task force of experts and distributed via the Internet to Italian physicians members of the main Italian gastroenterological associations. Ninety-four physicians accepted to participate, of whom 44% we…

- To Take or Not to Take: A Case of Cholestyramine Induced Vitamin K Deficiency. [Case Reports]S D Med. 2025 Jul; 78(7):317-318.SD
- Cholestyramine resin combines with bile acids preventing their reabsorption from the small bowel, leading to a reduction in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. While rarely clinically significant, in some cases this can lead to vitamin K related coagulopathy. We present a case of a 57-year-old female with a profound vitamin K deficiency refractory to concomitant oral vitamin K …
