- Babesiosis at ultra-low parasitemia presenting as secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in a patient on B cell-depleting therapy. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights the heterogeneity of babesiosis and its potential to present with minimal parasitemia, yet severe systemic inflammation in immunocompromised hosts. Additionally, this case underscores the importance of maintaining a broad differential in patients on B cell-depleting agents who present with new pancytopenia and systemic inflammatory symptoms. Early utilization of microbial cell-free DNA next-generation sequencing tests may aid in timely diagnosis and treatment.

- Spatiotemporal and tissue-specific dynamics of bacterial communities in adult female Ixodes ricinus during a four-year period. [Journal Article]
- The hard tick Ixodes ricinus serves as vector for life-threatening tick-borne diseases (TBDs) such as Lyme borreliosis, relapsing fever, and tick-borne encephalitis. Due to the ticks` ability to adjust to climate changes, their habitat is expanding quickly across Europe, and the incidences of TBD´s are increasing. Therefore, to better understand and control TBDs it is essential to expand the know…

- Clinical and Genetic Spectrum of ATP1A3-Related Disorders: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study. [Journal Article]
- ATP1A3-related disorders comprise an expanding group of ultra-rare neurologic conditions, classically including rapid-onset dystonia-parkinsonism (RDP), alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC), and cerebellar ataxia, areflexia, pes cavus, optic atrophy, and sensorineural hearing loss (CAPOS) syndrome. However, accumulating reports suggest a broader and overlapping phenotypic spectrum. In this c…

- New perspectives in the treatment of chronic eosinophilic pneumonia in the era of targeted therapies. [Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: All the treatments considered were safe and well tolerated, and their use provided significant benefits in terms of symptom control, despite the limited impact on pulmonary function. Owing to their steroid-sparing effects, these agents are useful in reducing the adverse effects associated with long-term corticosteroid use. Anti-IL-5 biologics represent a promising therapeutic option for patients with relapsing or corticosteroid-dependent CEP. Despite encouraging results, larger prospective studies are needed to better define their role in the long-term management of this disease.

- Concomitant Borreliosis and Invasive Amoebiasis: A Rare Case with Suspected Sexual Acquisition. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: The differential diagnosis of this complex and unusual clinical picture, together with the temporal evolution of the patient's signs and symptoms, led us to hypothesize the presence of concomitant infections. These were most likely borreliosis and a STE disease, the latter ultimately diagnosed as amebiasis with hepatic invasion, allowing appropriate treatment and a favorable clinical outcome.

- Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii genotype III in a dog with recurrent fever and panniculitis coinfected with Babesia odocoilei-like sp. [Case Reports]
- A 2-year-old, spayed female, mixed breed dog presented for evaluation of recurrent febrile episodes over 5 months, intermittently accompanied by the development of SC nodules. Histopathologic examination of the SC lesions was indicative of panniculitis. Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii genotype III DNA was amplified and sequenced from an excised SC nodule. Indirect immunofluorescence antibod…

- Defining strain variation in the maintenance of Borrelia turicatae during hyperparasitism and transovarial transmission in the tick vector. [Journal Article]bioRxiv. 2026 Aug 03.B
- Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) spirochetes are maintained in nature through vector-associated transmission routes primarily in argasid ticks. However, the extent to which strain-level differences influence the maintenance of TBRF spirochetes remains unclear. We evaluated two Borrelia turicatae strains, Bt -SSK1 and Bt -FCB, in Ornithodoros turicata . Both strains were acquired by female ticks,…

- Comparative efficacy of five calcium and phosphorus treatment protocols in puerperal hypocalcemia and relapse prevention. [Randomized Controlled Trial]Vet J. 2026 Oct; 319:106832.VJ
- Intravenous calcium is the standard treatment for milk fever, although adjunctive therapies such as oral calcium or parenteral phosphorus are often used, with unclear additional benefits. This study evaluated whether adjunctive calcium or phosphorus therapies improve clinical and biochemical recovery following intravenous calcium treatment. This prospective study included 41 postpartum cows with …

- Relapse of Steroid-Dependent Nephrotic Syndrome Despite Long-Term Ciclosporin Therapy in an 11-Year-Old Child: A Case Report and Review on the Management of Nephrotic Syndrome in Children. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights several important therapeutic considerations in relapsing childhood nephrotic syndrome: recognition of SDNS as a subgroup of SSNS, accurate prednisolone dosing during relapse, careful assessment of edema and intravascular volume status before diuretic therapy, and individualized use of steroid-sparing agents and antimicrobial prophylaxis. In children receiving prolonged ciclosporin therapy, treatment should be regularly reviewed with blood pressure, renal function, and therapeutic drug monitoring in view of potential calcineurin inhibitor toxicity, and alternative steroid-sparing options such as levamisole may be considered where clinically appropriate.

- Relapsing Salmonella Meningitis in an Infant: A Case Report and Review of the Literature. [Journal Article]
- Accurate diagnosis of bacterial meningitis is critical, particularly in young febrile infants. Although commercially available multiplex PCR assays enable rapid pathogen detection, these typically do not include Salmonella spp. or other Enterobacteriaceae, which may result in missed diagnoses and/or inappropriate treatment duration. We report the case of a 2-month-old female infant with Salmonell…

- An early adolescent boy, born to a consanguineously married couple, with mild baseline developmental delay, presented with fever-triggered acute encephalopathy manifesting as ataxia, tremors and seizures. Neuroimaging revealed multifocal, symmetric involvement of the insular cortex, basal ganglia, temporo-occipital regions and cerebellum with diffusion restriction. Extensive infectious, autoimmun…

- Spotted fever Rickettsia and relapsing fever Borrelia in rodents from southern India. [Journal Article]
- Bacterial zoonoses constitute a significant proportion of emerging infectious diseases. Yet, the diversity and transmission cycles of many zoonotic bacteria remain poorly characterized, particularly in tropical, biodiverse regions where host and vector diversity are high, and the burden of zoonotic disease in human populations is substantial. In this study, we investigated the presence of five pa…

- Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a rare systemic autoinflammatory condition that presents with symptoms such as episodic fevers, a transient rash, inflammatory arthritis, and significant systemic inflammation. Diseases that have a relapsing-remitting clinical course can be challenging to diagnose and treat. We present a case of an 18 year old female with multiple flares over several years re…
