  • Mirtazapine and Slow-Wave Sleep: A Focused Narrative Review of Human Polysomnographic Evidence. [Review]
    Cureus. 2026 Aug; 18(8):e114784.Pham BC
  • Sleep disturbance is a common feature of depressive disorders and may be influenced by antidepressant-associated alterations in sleep architecture. Mirtazapine is a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant with a distinctive pharmacologic profile involving histamine H1 receptor antagonism, alpha-2 adrenergic antagonism, and serotonergic receptor modulation, which may contribute to i…
  • Mirtazapine in Treating Functional Dyspepsia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. [Journal Article]
Gastroenterology Res. 2026 Aug; 19(4):184-189.Nguyen HT, Vaghefi A, … Pitts DGR
  • CONCLUSIONS: Mirtazapine was associated with significantly lower symptom severity compared with control treatment across available RCTs of FD. Increased heterogeneity may reflect differences in dosing, patient selection, and study design. Despite this, sensitivity analyses indicate that the observed effect is robust. Given the limited therapeutic options for refractory FD, mirtazapine may warrant consideration in select patient populations. However, larger and more methodologically uniform trials are needed to better define its role before considering clinical use.

  • Depression is a common comorbidity in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD) and is associated with poorer clinical outcomes. Due to concerns about hepatic metabolism and limited tolerability, the use of traditional antidepressants is often restricted. Mirtazapine is a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant. Driven by its unique rigid tetracyclic scaffold and enantiomeric prope…
