- A biochemical difference between HAI-2 variants causing syndromic and non-syndromic Congenital Sodium Diarrhea. [Journal Article]
- Variants in the SPINT2 gene, encoding HAI-2, cause the syndromic form of autosomal recessive Congenital Sodium Diarrhea (CSD), a life-threatening disease with early-onset persistent diarrhea and stools containing elevated levels of sodium. A newly discovered variant, HAI-2 Y68C, causes a milder non-syndromic CSD-like condition in an isolated case. The present investigation compares biochemical fe…

- Bacillus cereus enterotoxins change epithelial barrier function and ion transport in a Caco-2/HT29-MTX co-culture model, provoking inflammation, apoptosis and membrane damage. [Journal Article]
- Diarrheal disease caused by Bacillus cereus is driven by pore-forming enterotoxins, with hemolysin BL (Hbl) and non-hemolytic enterotoxin (Nhe) as major virulence factors. Toxin structure and mode of action are well described, while especially human intestinal epithelial responses remain incompletely characterized. With the co-culture system of Caco-2 and mucus-producing HT29-MTX cells (9:1), thi…

- Dietary Supplementation of Milk Oligosaccharides Supports Intestinal Barrier Integrity and Enhances Immune Function in Weaned Pigs. [Journal Article]J Nutr. 2026 Oct; 156(10):101790.JN
- CONCLUSIONS: These results suggested that MOs show a significant beneficial effect on weaned pigs in a structure-dependent manner, because 2'-FL and 3'-SL were more effective than GOS, partly by improving nutrient absorption and intestinal barrier function.

- Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP)-Secreting Neuroblastic Tumors in Children Presenting With Chronic Secretory Diarrhea: A Report of Two Cases. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Jul; 18(7):e112564.C
- Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)-secreting neuroblastic tumors are rare pediatric neoplasms that may present with chronic secretory diarrhea prior to tumor detection, posing significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. VIP-induced diarrhea is typically profuse, watery, and refractory to standard management, often resulting in dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, weight loss, and failure t…

- BEST4[+] cells: a potential hub of intestinal ion transport and diarrhea manipulation. [Review]
- BEST4[+] cells are a recently identified, functionally specialized intestinal epithelial cell population characterized through single-cell and spatial transcriptomic analyses in humans, pigs, rats, and other vertebrates. These cells characteristically express BEST4, OTOP2, CA7, and GUCY2C, and exhibit particularly high CFTR expression in the small intestine, supporting their roles in luminal pH s…

- Characterization of Host Protein Prohibitin-2 Interacting With Cryptosporidium parvum Cyclophilin 23. [Journal Article]Transbound Emerg Dis. 2026; 2026(1):e8933271.TE
- Cryptosporidium parvum is a prevalent protozoan pathogen responsible for moderate to severe diarrhea in humans and animals, posing a significant threat to global public health. Host-parasite interactions play a crucial role in the infection process of C. parvum. Cyclophilin 23 (CpCyP23), a secreted protein of C. parvum, is implicated in parasite development and pathogenicity. As a secretory prote…

- Transcriptome, glycome, and mucinome analysis reveal zinc is essential for the composition of mucus in the human goblet cell model HT-29-MTX. [Journal Article]
- Zinc (Zn) deficiency affects approximately 1 billion people worldwide with severe consequences for their health, including increased intestinal infections, inflammation, and diarrhea. Accordingly, the intestinal defense barrier is compromised, leading to epithelial destruction and alteration of mucus. However, the processes and the extent to which Zn deficiency affects mucin synthesis in intestin…

- Recombinant Bacillus subtilis spores expressing cholera toxin B and ovalbumin prevent ovalbumin-specific food allergy in mice by upregulating regulatory T cells and modulating gut microbiome flora. [Journal Article]Front Immunol. 2026; 17:1872151.FI
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that B.s-CotC-CTB-OVA spores may serve as a preventive oral antigen-delivery strategy to promote antigen-specific immune regulation and partially modulate microbiota-associated immune responses in OVA-induced food allergy.

- Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745 protects against small intestinal injury in a model of gliadin-peptide-induced sterile inflammatory enteropathy. [Journal Article]Front Immunol. 2026; 17:1846961.FI
- Inflammation of the small intestine can be caused by infections, immune-mediated disorders (such as celiac disease) and medications, leading to malabsorption, chronic diarrhea, and subclinical alterations including increased gut permeability and systemic inflammation. It has been suggested that probiotics can restore barrier integrity and reduce inflammation. The objective of the present study wa…

- Overcoming Antigenic Drift in PEDV: Broadly Protective Antigen Design and sIgA-Driven Lactogenic Immunity. [Review]Vet Sci. 2026 Jun 30; 13(7).VS
- Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) remains one of the most critical enteric coronaviruses affecting the global swine industry. PEDV causes severe diarrhea, dehydration, and high mortality in neonatal piglets. Despite the widespread use of commercial vaccines, persistent PEDV outbreaks worldwide indicate that current vaccination strategies provide suboptimal protection. Increasing evidence sug…

- Host-Microbiota Interactions in the Regulation of Intestinal Health in Weaned Piglets: Molecular Mechanisms and Nutritional Intervention Strategies. [Review]Animals (Basel). 2026 Jul 08; 16(14).A
- The weaning period represents a critical developmental window during which the intestinal host-microbiota interaction network in piglets undergoes profound remodeling and becomes highly vulnerable to disruption. Abrupt dietary transition, reduced feed intake, environmental stressors, and pathogen exposure can collectively interfere with gut microbial succession, epithelial barrier maturation, muc…

- Feline chronic diarrhea: causes and nutritional management. [Review]
- Chronic diarrhea is a common clinical sign in cats, caused by various underlying conditions. Chronic diarrhea can be classified as either small or large bowel diarrhea based on clinical signs. The mechanisms involved are complex, including osmotic and secretory diarrhea, impaired intestinal barrier function, and dysregulated intestinal motility. Given the complexity of the causes of chronic diarr…

- Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection with diverse clinical manifestations that frequently delay diagnosis because of its nonspecific presentation. Hematologic abnormalities have been described in affected patients; however, severe thrombocytopenia remains an uncommon finding. We present the case of a 50-year-old woman who was admitted with a four-day history of fever up to 39°C, diffuse abdominal …

- A rare cause of congenital diarrhea: a homozygous AGR2 frameshift variant in an infant. [Case Reports]Turk J Pediatr. 2026 Jun 26; 68(3):530-538.TJ
- CONCLUSIONS: This case expands the clinical spectrum of AGR2-related disease by highlighting a predominantly gastrointestinal presentation with severe congenital secretory diarrhea, failure to thrive, electrolyte imbalance, and a possible early respiratory manifestation. Given the rarity of this condition, AGR2 deficiency may be considered in selected infants presenting with severe congenital diarrhea and failure to thrive, particularly in the setting of consanguinity, even in the absence of definite pulmonary involvement.
