- Repurposing FDA approved drugs targeting IL-6 associated signalling for the management of rheumatoid arthritis: an in silico and experimental approach. [Journal Article]
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease that is mediated by pro-inflammatory cytokines, like interleukin-6 (IL-6). IL-6 plays an important role in synovial inflammation and joint degradation. In this study, a combined in silico, in vitro and in vivo approach was used to identify and preliminarily evaluate valganciclovir hydrochloride as potential modulator of IL-6 r…

- Bilateral cytomegalovirus retinitis in the setting of acquired lymphopenia following administration of bendamustine. [Journal Article]Retin Cases Brief Rep. 2026 Sep 23. [Online ahead of print]RC
- CONCLUSIONS: Bendamustine can cause profound lymphopenia with reduced CD4 T-cell levels; risk of herpes virus retinitis is elevated in the setting of such immunosuppression. In HIV-negative patients, there is no specific treatment to raise the CD4 count. Prompt initiation and continued administration of systemic and local antiviral treatment can lead to disease control and preservation of vision while awaiting immune reconstitution.

- Syphilitic Neuroretinitis with Positive Cytomegalovirus Serology in an Immunocompetent Adolescent: A Case Report. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights the importance of comprehensive infectious evaluation in neuroretinitis, even in immunocompetent individuals. Early diagnosis and appropriate targeted antimicrobial therapy are essential to prevent permanent visual loss.

- Maribavir for the Management of a Complex Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Infection After Liver Transplantation: Refractoriness and Intolerance to Standard Therapies in the Intensive Care Unit. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Aug; 18(8):e114566.C
- Managing cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in the post-transplant setting is frequently complicated by severe adverse effects from standard antiviral therapy or viral resistance. We report the cases of two critically ill liver transplant recipients in whom maribavir, a kinase inhibitor approved for refractory/resistant CMV, was used. In the first case, maribavir achieved rapid viral suppression in …

- Budget Impact of Prophylactic Letermovir to Prevent Cytomegalovirus Disease in High-Risk Adult Kidney Transplant Recipients. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This analysis provides evidence on the potential impact of introducing letermovir into the US market. While the acquisition cost of letermovir is higher than that of VGCV, there are estimated cost savings, primarily driven by the prevention of LN events and their associated downstream clinical consequences, suggesting that the savings from LN avoidance outweigh the incremental prophylaxis costs of introducing letermovir. However, the overall budget impact remains minimal and should be interpreted in the context of the evolving evidence base.

- Topical versus oral antiviral therapy for cytomegalovirus anterior uveitis: a multicenter study in Taiwan. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Compared with topical ganciclovir, oral valganciclovir is associated with a lower risk of recurrent and chronic CMV AU. Chronic and recurrent disease are associated with increased risk of glaucoma requiring intervention, and recurrent disease carries an additional risk of corneal decompensation.

- ANZTCT cytomegalovirus practice survey for allogeneic haemopoietic stem cell transplant and cellular therapy recipients in Australia and New Zealand. [Journal Article]Intern Med J. 2026 Sep 10. [Online ahead of print]IM
- CONCLUSIONS: Institutional preferences and medicine funding drives variability in ANZ practice. This leaves potential for healthcare inequity since newer antiviral agents are inconsistently used, contrasting with international guidelines.

- CONCLUSIONS: Valganciclovir 450 mg three times weekly appears safe and effective for CMV prophylaxis in SOT recipients requiring iHD, though it may be associated with an increased risk of thrombocytopenia.

- Early Secondary Graft Failure After Complete Donor Chimerism with Autologous Recovery Following Haploidentical HSCT for Relapsed B-ALL. [Case Reports]
- Secondary graft failure after initial donor engraftment is a rare complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). We report a 47-year-old man with Philadelphia chromosome-negative B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) who underwent haploidentical sibling peripheral blood HSCT after second complete remission. Neutrophil engraftment occurred by Day +14 with platelet…

- Multinational Retrospective Chart Review of Treatment Patterns, Clinical Outcomes, and Healthcare Resource Utilization in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients With Refractory/Resistant Cytomegalovirus Infection or Intolerance to Anti-Cytomegalovirus Therapy. [Multicenter Study]Transplant Proc. 2026 Oct; 58(8):1653-1669.TP
- CONCLUSIONS: In this multinational real-world study of SOT recipients with RRI CMV infection, 21.1% did not achieve viremia clearance and 21.6% experienced recurrence, and a notable portion had unfavorable outcomes, such as adverse events, mortality, and hospitalizations. Results suggest that therapies that achieve and maintain CMV clearance without treatment-limiting toxicities are needed.

- Real-World Effectiveness and Renal Safety of Foscarnet for CMV Reactivation After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation. [Journal Article]
- Background/Objectives: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (allo-HCT) recipients. Letermovir is used to prevent infections, but it is not available in many countries. Ganciclovir and valganciclovir carry a risk of bone marrow suppression. Foscarnet is frequently used as a bone marrow-sparing alternative; h…
