- Superficial squamous cell carcinoma arising in Laimer's diverticulum: a rare case highlighting the importance of anatomical differentiation. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: We report a rare case of superficial squamous cell carcinoma originating in LD. Careful anatomical assessment is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate surgical management of cervical esophageal diverticula. This case underscores the importance of early surgical excision or regular surveillance when cervical esophageal diverticula are managed nonoperatively.

- Impact of Frailty on Surgical Outcomes in Patients Treated for Cricopharyngeus Muscle Dysfunction. [Journal Article]Laryngoscope. 2026 Sep 20. [Online ahead of print]L
- CONCLUSIONS: Frailty is a significant predictor of postoperative swallowing outcomes following UES surgery. Mean improvement was seen among both groups, but nonfrail patients derived greater benefit. Nonetheless, frailty status should not preclude intervention; incorporating frailty assessment into preoperative evaluation may improve patient selection and expectations for outcomes in CPMD management.

- Evolution of endoluminal treatment of Zenker's diverticulum and complete pharyngo-oesophageal obstruction. [Journal Article]Curr Opin Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2026 Sep 18. [Online ahead of print]CO
- CONCLUSIONS: Minimal access endoluminal 'third space' approaches to the upper oesophageal sphincter and oesophagus provide safe access, enhanced visualization and the ability to manage UES and oesophageal disease in the elderly population where anatomical issues may impede rigid endoscopy and open approaches contribute enhanced risk of complications. Z-POEM and POETRE can be successfully applied to treat Zenker diverticuli, cricopharyngeal dysfunction and complete hypopharyngeal-oesophageal obstruction. Third space endoscopy promotes increased collaboration between clinicians and subspecialities for the benefit of patients.

- Zenker's diverticulum endoscopic treatment: less is more. [Journal Article]Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2026 Sep; 118(9):495-497.RE
- Zenker's diverticulum is a posterolateral pulsion diverticulum arising at Killian's triangle secondary to impaired relaxation of the cricopharyngeal muscle (CPM). Although its prevalence in the general population is estimated at 0.01-0.11 %, it predominantly affects elderly, comorbid patients in whom dysphagia, regurgitation, and aspiration risk translate into a disproportionate burden on quality…

- Differentiating Persistent and Recurrent Dysphagia in Zenker Diverticulum: A POuCH Study. [Journal Article]Laryngoscope. 2026 Sep 04. [Online ahead of print]L
- CONCLUSIONS: Patients with recurrent dysphagia are less common than persistent dysphagia, and there are no clear markers to predict surgical responders from persistent dysphagia (e.g., non-responders), however all non-responders occurred in the first 12 months after surgery.

- Horner's Syndrome: An Unusual Complication of Transcervical Zenker's Diverticulectomy. [Journal Article]
- Horner's syndrome is a clinical entity encountered by head and neck surgeons in patients with penetrating neck injury, post-neck dissections, and cervical sympathetic chain schwannomas. However, Horner's syndrome after transcervical resection of Zenker's diverticulum has not been previously described in the published literature. A patient who had failed two previous attempts at endoscopic repair …

- Peroral endoscopic myotomy versus flexible endoscopic septotomy for Zenker's diverticulum: a cost-effectiveness analysis. [Journal Article]Gastrointest Endosc. 2026 Jul 28. [Online ahead of print]GE
- CONCLUSIONS: Over a 12-month time horizon, FES appears to be the economically preferred strategy for the treatment of ZD. Although Z-POEM is clinically effective, its higher upfront costs limit short-term economic value. However, when longer-term outcomes are incorporated, Z-POEM may become cost-effective over a 24-month horizon, driven by improved durability and lower recurrence compared with FES.

- Unintentional Weight Loss Does Not Predict Poor Outcomes in Zenker Diverticulum. [Multicenter Study]Laryngoscope. 2026 Nov; 136(11):4889-4895.L
- CONCLUSIONS: Unintentional weight loss is common with ZD. Patients with worse dysphagia are more likely to have more weight loss. Weight loss does not increase with the size of the diverticulum or length of symptoms. Surgery has a similar safety profile with greater improvement in dysphagia in patients reporting weight loss.

- Third-space endoscopy: Current techniques, clinical applications, and future directions. [Review]
- Third-space endoscopy refers to a set of endoscopic techniques that allow access to the submucosal space or "third space" between the mucosa and muscularis propria, enabling therapeutic intervention while preserving mucosal integrity. The unifying concept across all third-space endoscopy procedures is the creation of a submucosal tunnel with a mucosal flap acting as a safety valve, allowing separ…

- Zenker's diverticulum in the era of third-space endoscopy: innovations, challenges, and adverse event management. [Review]IGIE. 2026 Jun; 5(2):241-248.IGIE
- Endoscopic management of Zenker's diverticulum has rapidly evolved with the emergence of innovative therapeutic endoscopic approaches and the integration of novel devices. These techniques offer unprecedented precision and safety, although rare, adverse events can become catastrophic if not promptly recognized and managed. This narrative review explores recent innovations in third-space technique…
