- Drug-Induced Ductopenia in Two Prospective Registries: Favourable Outcomes and Late Recovery Despite Prolonged Cholestasis. [Journal Article]Liver Int. 2026 Nov; 46(11):e70917.LI
- CONCLUSIONS: DID is an uncommon phenotype of DILI, characterized by marked hyperbilirubinemia and a frequent association with hypersensitivity features. Most cases exhibited moderate liver injury and followed a benign, reversible clinical course, with no reports of poor outcome. However, delayed recovery was observed in a subset of patients.

- Sertraline, a commonly used first-line antidepressant for major depressive disorder, is primarily metabolized by the polymorphic cytochrome P450 enzymes CYP2C19 and CYP2B6. This large-scale Chinese cohort study (N = 1070 patients; 1414 serum concentration measurements) evaluated whether incorporating CYP2B6 phenotype provides additional information beyond CYP2C19 phenotype in explaining interindi…

- ObjectiveTo evaluate the effects of Jue tone music therapy on depressive symptoms, sleep quality, activities of daily living, and selected serum biomarkers in patients with post-stroke depression (PSD).MethodsIn this randomized controlled trial, patients with PSD were randomly assigned to a control group or an intervention group. The control group received usual care, including sertraline hydroch…

- Variability in Sertraline Pharmacokinetics in Routine Clinical Practice: Influence of Sex, Age, Body Weight, Smoking, and Co-Medication. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Elderly age may contribute to higher sertraline concentrations; however, its effect appears modest after accounting for clustering. Sex differences are largely explained by body weight, and smoking does not appear to influence pharmacokinetics. Carbamazepine showed a consistent induction pattern, whereas other co-medication findings should be considered exploratory.

- A scoping review of adverse events associated with concomitant beta-adrenoreceptor blockers and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. [Review]Br J Clin Pharmacol. 2026 Oct 07. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- Beta-adrenoreceptor blockers (beta-blockers) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly used medications and often used together, such as for the treatment of anxiety. However, there is no recent review of any potential adverse events related to concomitant use of medicines from each group. This scoping review therefore aimed to provide this narrative synthesis. Key database…

- Differential Effects of Antidepressants on Hypothalamic Serotonin Levels in Rats: An In Vivo Microdialysis Study. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Antidepressant treatment increases hypothalamic serotonin, with clomipramine and sertraline producing the most pronounced effects. Considering that clomipramine and paroxetine combine high serotonergic elevation with notable anticholinergic activity, these drugs may pose a higher risk of voiding difficulties than fluoxetine or sertraline. This study focused on characterizing central serotonergic responses to antidepressant administration as a neurochemical endpoint. The relative risk of voiding difficulty across different antidepressant classes may help guide individualized antidepressant selection. Clinicians should exercise caution when prescribing these agents to elderly patients, individuals with benign prostatic hyperplasia, or those receiving concurrent anticholinergic medications.

- Multiband ALFF in patients with major depressive disorder treated with esketamine and sertraline: A preliminary study. [Journal Article]Brain Res Bull. 2026 Oct 06; 246:112148. [Online ahead of print]BR
- CONCLUSIONS: A 2-week combination treatment regimen of esketamine and sertraline was associated with frequency-specific ALFF changes in prefrontal, sensorimotor, and visual cortical regions in patients with major depressive disorder. No ROI-clinical correlation survived correction for multiple comparisons across the three families of tests; the nominal association between L-IFG ALFF change and suicidal-ideation reduction is exploratory and hypothesis-generating, and requires independent replication before prefrontal ALFF modulation can be considered a candidate marker for monitoring treatment-related neurofunctional changes.

- Stable Overall Volume, Shifting Structure: Nine Years of Paediatric Outpatient Prescribing and Dispensing in Finland, 2017-2025. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Overall paediatric dispensation volume in Finland was broadly stable across 2017-2025, but the underlying structure changed substantially. Antibiotic stewardship gains held, central nervous system medicine use rose continuously, and the channel mix shifted toward private paediatric care for younger children. If access to private care depends on family resources, this shift may widen inequalities in children's access to prescribed medicines, although socioeconomic factors were not assessed here.

- Antidepressant treatment alters both suicide-candidate gene expression levels and mitochondrial bioenergetic function in human microglial HMC3 cell line. [Journal Article]Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry. 2026 Oct 05; 150:111961. [Online ahead of print]PN
- CONCLUSIONS: Sertraline, Amitriptyline, and Trazodone exerted significant decreases in ATP and PGC-1α levels, suggesting an increase in treatment-emergent suicidality risk due to a potential increase in microglial activity, while Paroxetine exerted a protective effect. The most prominent finding was that the antidepressants decreasing ATP and PGC-1α levels, simultaneously, induced suicide-candidate gene expression profiles which are also indicative of an increase in treatment-emergent suicidality risk. Despite a decrease in ATP and PGC-1α levels induced by three antidepressants, ROS levels remained unchanged, suggesting a potential oxidative stress-independent bioenergetic impairment. Collectively, these results suggest a clear correlation between PGC-1α levels and suicide-candidate gene expression profiles regarding the ultimate change in the treatment-emergent suicidality risk.

- Antidepressants are among the most widely prescribed pharmaceuticals worldwide, and compounds such as sertraline and citalopram have been detected in surface waters, raising concerns about their impacts on non-target aquatic organisms. The current study aimed to (i) evaluate immediate behavioral responses to citalopram and sertraline using habitat selection (avoidance and colonization) in zebrafi…

- Treating co-occurring alcohol use disorder and major depressive disorder: A systematic review of combination and multimodal pharmacotherapy. [Review]Am J Addict. 2026 Oct 04. [Online ahead of print]AJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Converging dopaminergic, serotonergic, glutamatergic, opioidergic, and neuroimmune mechanisms support combined pharmacotherapy, but the evidence base remains thin, underpowered, and unreplicated. Available evidence and current integrated-care approaches favor concurrent rather than sequential treatment of AUD and MDD, although the evidence supporting specific pharmacological combinations remains limited.

- Background Pharmacological therapy, particularly the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), plays a central role in managing anxiety spectrum disorders. However, real-world clinical practice can deviate from evidence-based recommendations, leading to challenges such as prolonged benzodiazepine use, polypharmacy, and low rates of generic prescribing. Evaluating these real-world pr…
