- Effectiveness of Chatbots in Mental Health Screening and Assessment: Systematic Review. [Systematic Review]JMIR Ment Health. 2026 Oct 06; 13:e93672.JM
- CONCLUSIONS: Chatbots and AI conversational agents demonstrate clinically relevant performance in mental health screening and assessment. However, safe implementation requires clear clinical protocols, professional supervision, integration with electronic health records, and active mitigation of algorithmic bias. These technologies should complement rather than replace clinical judgment.

- User Experiences With a Social Robot for Cardiometabolic Risk Assessment in a Community Setting in Uppsala, Sweden: Qualitative Semistructured Interview Study. [Journal Article]J Med Internet Res. 2026 Oct 06; 28:e87025.JM
- CONCLUSIONS: This study provides insights into users' perceptions of the usability and acceptance of a social robot for risk assessment in a community context, which can help inform the further development of this technology for health screening in a community context. In the future, the robot could be further developed to conduct risk assessments in multiple languages and offer a broader service to users, such as providing appropriate information related to healthy and active living.

[Journal Article]J Pediatr Psychol. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]JP
- CONCLUSIONS: N-PREP is highly feasible and acceptable, with promising signals of improving emotional regulation and decreasing distress in parents and infants. Findings support further evaluation in a fully powered hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial.

- Cytomegalovirus DNAemia After Pediatric Liver Transplantation: Clinical Characteristics, Risk Factors, and Outcomes. [Journal Article]Pediatr Infect Dis J. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]PI
- CONCLUSIONS: CMV DNAemia was common, but only one-third of episodes required antiviral treatment, and no tissue-invasive disease occurred. Younger recipients and those requiring pretransplant intensive care were at increased risk for clinically significant CMV infection. CMV DNAemia alone should not be considered a surrogate for clinically significant infection, supporting individualized, risk-adapted surveillance and prevention in pediatric liver transplant recipients.

- Predictors of self-rated health in older adults: insights from an anchoring vignettes study. [Journal Article]Eur J Ageing. 2026 Oct 06; 23(1).EJ
- Self-rated health is one of the most used measures of subjective health in research. At the same time, it presents several methodological challenges. Self-rated health requires individuals to translate their complex, multifaceted health experiences into a single response on the self-rated health scale. When different groups interpret and rate their health differently e.g. by gender or birth cohor…

- CONCLUSIONS: Both patient-preference cohorts showed within-group improvement over six months. Preference-based allocation, baseline phenotype differences, incomplete follow-up and the sensitivity of the between-group comparisons to multiplicity and covariate adjustment prevent conclusions about efficacy or superiority. Randomised, controlled studies using standardised headache-day endpoints are required.

- Adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy in high-risk oculoplastic reconstructions requiring graft-based surgery: a retrospective case series. [Journal Article]Int Ophthalmol. 2026 Oct 06; 46(1).IO
- CONCLUSIONS: In a heterogeneous cohort of high-risk oculoplastic reconstructions requiring grafting-including orbital implant exposure repair and complex inflammatory, infectious, or traumatic etiologies-adjunctive HBOT was used as a supportive modality and was associated with acceptable healing outcomes. The longer recovery observed with extended (20-session) HBOT courses likely reflects greater baseline disease severity rather than a reduced treatment effect. Given the retrospective design and clinical heterogeneity, further studies are needed to clarify patient selection criteria and define optimal HBOT protocols in oculoplastic reconstruction.

- A targeted analytical method for seven short- and ultra-short chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) was developed and validated in grain products using LC-MS/MS. The method is simple and robust, with validation results demonstrating acceptable recoveries and reproducibility. The validated method was applied to a variety of grain products commonly consumed in the United States, includin…

- Variability in Bracing Design and Bracing Protocols for the Non-Operative Management of Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease: A Scoping Systematic Review. [Review]Cureus. 2026 Sep; 18(9):e115826.C
- Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) is a self-limiting avascular necrosis of the femoral head in children, with management aimed at preserving hip joint congruency and reducing the risk of long-term degenerative changes. Bracing is a commonly used containment strategy; however, its effectiveness remains controversial owing to variation in brace design, biomechanical principles, and treatment protoc…

- HbA1C Variability as an Independent Predictor of Diabetic Retinopathy: A 10-Year Retrospective Nested Case-Control Study in a Middle Eastern Population. [Journal Article]Cureus. 2026 Sep; 18(9):e116597.C
- Background Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision impairment worldwide and a major microvascular complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Although chronic hyperglycemia is a well-established risk factor, evidence is accumulating that long-term glycemic variability may independently contribute to DR development. Data from Middle Eastern and Gulf Cooperation Council populations rem…

- Minocycline in Acute Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury: A Systematic Review and Exploratory Meta-Analysis of Preclinical and Clinical Evidence. [Review]Arch Acad Emerg Med. 2026; 14(1):e46.AA
- CONCLUSIONS: Current evidence suggests that while minocycline exhibits promising biological activity and an acceptable safety profile in acute traumatic SCI, robust clinical efficacy has not been conclusively demonstrated. Well-designed, adequately powered randomized controlled trials with standardized outcome reporting are required to determine whether these biological effects translate into meaningful functional recovery.

- Clinical evaluation of three deep learning contouring models for head and neck organs at risk and lymph node levels. [Journal Article]Tech Innov Patient Support Radiat Oncol. 2026 Dec; 40:100437.TI
- CONCLUSIONS: All three models produced contours of clinically usable quality apart from Model D on the esophagus and the spinal canal. Models L and C were not statistically different throughout. Model D differed from both on the esophagus and the spinal canal, where it applies a narrower anatomical definition, and was the most accurate model on the remaining five OARs, though that advantage was only partly confirmed when the analysis was restricted to reference contours independent of the models. Model C gave the most predictable lymph node output: the narrowest spread and the only volumes not differing significantly from the expert reference. Deep learning contouring models significantly improve head and neck treatment planning efficiency by providing clinically acceptable accuracy in a fraction of the time required for manual contouring.

- CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed low vaccination rates amongst PLWH in Johannesburg, South Africa, specifically regarding guidelines from the South African HIV Clinicians Society. Increased awareness of the influenza vaccine and direct recommendations from healthcare providers were key factors linked to vaccine uptake.
