- Patient Perspectives in Postlaryngectomy Communication Rehabilitation and Outcomes. [Journal Article]Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2025 Feb; 172(2):580-587.OH
- CONCLUSIONS: Alaryngeal voice users reported higher efficacy of communication in most social contexts compared to aphonic communicators. Among alaryngeal voice users, TEP speech performed better in most social situations compared to an EL. Treatment characteristics including timing of surgery and radiation therapy were not associated with the ability to acquire alaryngeal voice, while the extent of resection and the type of reconstruction did show potential to impact voicing outcomes in patients who desire to pursue alaryngeal voicing techniques.

- Intensive Voice Treatment following Botulinum Neurotoxin Injection for a Speaker with Abductor Laryngeal Dystonia: An Exploratory Case Study. [Journal Article]
- Abductor laryngeal dystonia (ABLD) is a rare neurological voice disorder which results in sporadic opening of the vocal folds during speech. Etiology is unknown, and to date there is no identified effective behavioral treatment for it. It is hypothesized that LSVT LOUD®, which was developed to treat dysphonia secondary to Parkinson's disease, may have application to speakers with ABLD to improve …

- Pharyngeal reconstruction with a modified free alt flap with parastomal fascial wings. [Letter]J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg. 2021 Jun; 74(6):1355-1401.JP
- CONCLUSIONS: Here we report outcomes of pharyngeal reconstruction with a modified single perforator free ALT flap using fascial extensions to line the parastomal gutters. In the event of parastomal dehiscence, the placement of vascularized tissue parastomally may facilitate spontaneous healing and prevent major vessel exposure.

- [Speech Intelligibility and Marital Quality in Couples after Total Laryngectomy - Partners' View]. [Journal Article]Psychother Psychosom Med Psychol. 2019 Feb; 69(2):63-71.PP
- CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate need and importance of logopaedic support also with respect to marital quality. Further, interventions which emphasize the improvement of dyadic communication and enhancement of mutual activities should be stimulated.

- Management of complex pediatric laryngotracheal stenosis with skin graft reconstruction. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: Temporary endoluminal stenting with skin graft lining can reproduce epithelial continuity and provide "biological inhibition" to enhance the wound healing process. When previous reconstructive efforts have failed, use of STSG can be considered in the management of complex pediatric laryngotracheal stenosis.

- Development of a Low-Cost, Noninvasive, Portable Visual Speech Recognition Program. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: We have demonstrated the feasibility of a low-cost, noninvasive, portable VSRP based on Kinect to accurately predict speech from articulation movements in clinically trivial time. This VSRP could be used as a novel communication device for aphonic patients.

- Vocal fold hyalinosis in Urbach-Wiethe disease, a rare cause of hoarseness. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: Laser resection of hyalin plaques in the vocal folds and skin is a feasible treatment for lipoid proteinosis. However, speech may remain severely limited, due to impaired tongue and lip movement.
- The Norwegian Voice Handicap Index (VHI-N) patient scores are dependent on voice-related disease group. [Multicenter Study]
- The aim of this study is to determine to what extent the Voice Handicap Index-Norwegian (VHI-N) is scored depending on specific laryngological disease. In a multi-center study, 126 healthy subjects and 355 patients with different voice-related diseases answered the VHI-N. The VHI-N scores showed high Cronbach's alpha. Analyses of variance were performed with VHI-N dependent and specific voice-rel…

- Impact of syllable stress and phonetic context on the distribution of intermittent aphonia. [Journal Article]Clin Linguist Phon. 2014 Oct; 28(10):757-68.CL
- The occurrence of intermittent aphonia, perceived as sudden interruptions of voicing in connected speech, often reflects high stiffness of the vocal fold mucosa as part of a voice disorder. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the overarching hypothesis that the aphonic instances in voices with intermittent aphonia are not totally randomly appearing, but related to syllable stress and ph…

- Those three clinical cases involved aphonic female patients without any laryngeal disorders for their ENTs. 1) The first one had been out of work since 11/2 year because of her aphonia. She was still suffering from it in spite of a weekly speech therapy session and a monthly psychotherapy appointment. 2) The second patient had been aphonic for 3 weeks. Three different ENTs had renewed her prescri…
- Dystonia with aphonia, slow horizontal saccades, epilepsy and photic myoclonus: a novel syndrome? [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: These cases with caudo-rostrally spreading generalized dystonia with prominent facial and oro-mandibular involvement, severe speech impairment, marked slowing of horizontal saccades, and photic myoclonus likely represent a novel entity.

- Patient perceptions of factors leading to spasmodic dysphonia: a combined clinical experience of 350 patients. [Journal Article]

- Babbling, vegetative function, and language development after cricotracheal resection in aphonic children. [Journal Article]Laryngoscope. 2010 Dec; 120(12):2494-7.L
- CONCLUSIONS: The initial delay in speech acquisition observed following decannulation, along with the presence of a postsurgical canonical stage in all study subjects, supports the hypothesis that babbling is necessary for speech and language development. Furthermore, the presence of babbling is universally evident regardless of the age at which speech develops. Finally, there is no demonstrable correlation between preoperative sign language and rate of speech development.
