- Early-life infections and life course health and disease in the EU child cohort network. [Journal Article]Eur J Epidemiol. 2026 Aug 20. [Online ahead of print]EJ
- Research into the developmental origins of, and lifecourse influences on, health and disease has a significant gap: infections. Clinical and subclinical infections are nearly universal in early life and can induce structural and functional changes in developing organ systems with life-long consequences. Emerging evidence links common childhood infections-such as Epstein-Barr virus, Cytomegaloviru…

- An Unusual Case of Appendicitis Entrapped Within a Spigelian Hernia. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Aug; 18(8):e114778.C
- Acute appendicitis within a Spigelian hernia is a rare clinical entity that may present with atypical symptoms, resulting in diagnostic delay and complex operative decision-making. Previously reported cases have most commonly presented with localized right lower quadrant pain, abdominal wall masses, incarceration, bowel obstruction, or strangulation. Spigelian hernias occur along the semilunar li…

- Polymeric clip versus endoscopic stapler for securing the base of the appendix during laparoscopic appendectomy: An exploratory randomised controlled trial. [Journal Article]J Minim Access Surg. 2026 Aug 13. [Online ahead of print]JM
- CONCLUSIONS: PCs are a safe, technically simple and cost-effective alternative to staplers for appendiceal stump closure in LA, with comparable outcomes and a short learning curve. Larger multicentre RCTs are warranted.

- Early red blood cell transfusion strategy in septic shock among patients with cancer: the TRANSPORT randomized controlled trial. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: In cancer patients with septic shock, this trial did not demonstrate superiority of liberal over restrictive transfusion strategy. The absence of mortality benefit and the uncertainty surrounding the observed imbalance in adverse events do not support the routine preference of either transfusion strategy over the other.

- Differentiating Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders From Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Reviewing Diagnostic Guidelines. [Review]
- Individuals with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) present a range of neurodevelopmental deficits (e.g., inattention, hyperactivity, and executive dysfunction) which have shown marked overlap with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), making differential diagnosis challenging. While rates of comorbidity are high, evidence has suggested there a…

- Embryological Basis and Genetic Considerations of Right Lumbar Undescended Caecum with Paracaecal Appendix and Aberrant Vascular Supply. [Case Reports]
- The caecum normally descends to the right iliac fossa during embryogenesis. Disruptions in midgut development may result in its atypical positioning. In a male cadaver, the small, conical caecum and paracaecal appendix were in the right lumbar region. The ileocaecal orifice was on the anterior caecal wall, and the appendicular orifice opened on the medial caecal wall inferior to it. The ascending…

- Language instruction of deaf multilingual learners: a survey of teachers. [Journal Article]J Deaf Stud Deaf Educ. 2026 Aug 18. [Online ahead of print]JD
- This study investigates the instructional practices and self-reported confidence of educators working with Deaf Multilingual Learners (DMLs), students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and come from homes where languages other than English or American Sign Language are used. Through a national web-based survey (Appendix A), data were collected from 89 current and former teachers of DMLs, capturing …

- The trials of conservative treatment of acute uncomplicated appendicitis in the paediatric population: A pilot study. [Journal Article]Surgeon. 2026 Aug 17. [Online ahead of print]S
- CONCLUSIONS: Whilst the majority of patients presenting to hospital were treated surgically (81%), a substantial amount were treated conservatively (19%), giving a unique opportunity to review the effectiveness of medical treatment of uncomplicated acute appendicitis. Conservative treatment has proved to be effective in 100% of cases, supporting the feasibility of conservative management in appropriate cases.

- The Potential Role of 99mTc-FAPI SPECT/CT in the Staging of Mucinous Appendiceal Adenocarcinoma. [Journal Article]Clin Nucl Med. 2026 Aug 17. [Online ahead of print]CN
- We present a 55‑year‑old woman with adnexal masses and elevated CEA. Malignancy workup, adnexal biopsy, and intraoperative assessment revealed the appendix as the primary site, with pathology confirming mucinous adenocarcinoma. While mucinous tumors often show limited avidity on 18F‑FDG PET/CT due to low cellularity, this case demonstrates the utility of fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (F…

- Primary Signet Ring Cell Adenocarcinoma of the Appendix Masquerading as Acute Appendicitis: A Diagnostic Pitfall. [Case Reports]Iran J Pathol. 2026 Sep 01; 21(4):616-620.IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: PSRCA of the appendix is an aggressive malignancy often presenting at an advanced stage and mimicking acute appendicitis. Accurate histopathological evaluation is essential, as the diagnosis has important therapeutic implications, including the need for further oncological management beyond appendectomy.

- Management of complicated pediatric appendicitis: Where we've been and where we're going. [Journal Article]Semin Pediatr Surg. 2026 Jul 24; :151686. [Online ahead of print]SP
- Complicated appendicitis, in which the appendix has perforated, is a well-studied pediatric surgical condition. Despite this, practice management varies widely among institutions. Both suspected and confirmed perforation present unique challenges beyond those of acute uncomplicated appendicitis, namely increased healthcare utilization and a higher incidence of postoperative abscess. Debate contin…

- Ultrasonography is particularly useful in children because it can be repeated without ionizing radiation and can be adapted to the clinical question during the examination. A 10-year-old boy with right lower quadrant pain, right leg pain, and a limp was referred with suspected acute appendicitis. A comprehensive diagnostic ultrasound examination of the abdomen demonstrated a normal appendix and a…

[Journal Article]
- In 2023, international consensus recommendations suggested the use of prolonged-infusion beta-lactam antibiotics over short-infusion dosing in severely ill adult patients to improve mortality or clinical cure, although the certainty of evidence was very low. With the availability of several new randomized controlled trials (RCTs), this focused update re-evaluates the efficacy of prolonged versus …
