- Synthesis of Ultrathin High-Entropy Oxides with Phase Controllability. [Journal Article]
- High-entropy oxides (HEOs) with an ultrathin geometric structure are especially expected to exhibit extraordinary performance in different fields. The phase structure is deemed as a key factor in determining the properties of HEOs, rendering their phase control synthesis tempting. However, the disparity in intrinsic phase structures and physicochemical properties of multiple components makes it c…

- Meta-transcriptomic identification of groundnut RNA viruses in western Kenya and the novel detection of groundnut as a host for Cauliflower mosaic virus. [Journal Article]Virology. 2024 May; 593:110011.V
- CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate the power of Next Generation Sequencing in the discovery and identification of novel viruses in groundnuts. The detection of the new viruses indicates the complexity of virus diseases in groundnuts and would require more focus in future studies to establish the effect of the viruses as sole or mixed infections on the crop. The detection of PeMoV with potential origin from Malawi indicates the importance of seed certification and cross-boundary seed health testing.

- F-Doped Carbon Nanoparticles-Based Nucleation Assistance for Fast and Uniform Three-Dimensional Zn Deposition. [Journal Article]
- Aqueous Zn metal-based batteries have considerable potential as energy storage system; however, their application is extremely limited by dendrite development and poor reversibility. In this study, to overcome both challenges, F-doped carbon nanoparticles (FCNPs) are uniformly constructed on substrates (Ti, Zn, Cu, and steel) by a plasma-assisted surface modification, which endows reversible and …

- Genome-wide association studies reveal novel loci for resistance to groundnut rosette disease in the African core groundnut collection. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: We identified markers associated with GRD resistance after screening an Africa-wide core collection across three seasons in Uganda Groundnut is cultivated in several African countries where it is a major source of food, feed and income. One of the major constraints to groundnut production in Africa is groundnut rosette disease (GRD), which is caused by a complex of three agents: groundnut rosette assistor luteovirus, groundnut rosette umbravirus and its satellite RNA. Despite several years of breeding for GRD resistance, the genetics of the disease is not fully understood. The objective of the current study was to use the African core collection to establish the level of genetic variation in their response to GRD, and to map genomic regions responsible for the observed resistance. The African groundnut core genotypes were screened across two GRD hotspot locations in Uganda (Nakabango and Serere) for 3 seasons. The Area Under Disease Progress Curve combined with 7523 high quality SNPs were analyzed to establish marker-trait associations (MTAs). Genome-Wide Association Studies based on Enriched Compressed Mixed Linear Model detected 32 MTAs at Nakabango: 21 on chromosome A04, 10 on B04 and 1 on B08. Two of the significant markers were localised on the exons of a putative TIR-NBS-LRR disease resistance gene on chromosome A04. Our results suggest the likely involvement of major genes in the resistance to GRD but will need to be further validated with more comprehensive phenotypic and genotypic datasets. The markers identified in the current study will be developed into routine assays and validated for future genomics-assisted selection for GRD resistance in groundnut.

- RNA sequence analysis of diseased groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) reveals the full genome of groundnut rosette assistor virus (GRAV). [Journal Article]
- The complete genome sequences for two variant isolates of groundnut rosette assistor virus (GRAV) have been determined from symptomatic groundnut plants in western Kenya. The sequences of the two GRAV isolates (sc7.1 and sc7.2) are 84.2% identical at the nucleotide level and 98.5% identical at the coat protein level. The variants sc7.1 and sc7.2 comprise 5850 and 5879 nucleotides respectively, an…

- Biodegradable MnO2 nanosheet based DNAzyme-recycling amplification towards: Sensitive detection of intracellular MicroRNAs. [Journal Article]
- A new class of intracellular signal amplification approach, integrating biodegradable manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanosheet with target-triggered DNAzyme recycling amplification in one nanosystem, was developed for highly specific and sensitive monitoring of microRNAs (miRNAs) in living cells. Briefly, the MnO2 nanosheets were employed as carrier and quencher for the hairpin-locked-DNAzyme strands (…

- An Insulin-Responsive Sensor in the SIRT1 Disordered Region Binds DBC1 and PACS-2 to Control Enzyme Activity. [Journal Article]
- Current models of SIRT1 enzymatic regulation primarily consider the effects of fluctuating levels of its co-substrate NAD[+], which binds to the stably folded catalytic domain. By contrast, the roles of the sizeable disordered N- and C-terminal regions of SIRT1 are largely unexplored. Here we identify an insulin-responsive sensor in the SIRT1 N-terminal region (NTR), comprising an acidic cluster …

- Critical review of dog detection and the influences of physiology, training, and analytical methodologies. [Review]
- Detection dogs serve a plethora of roles within modern society, and are relied upon to identify threats such as explosives and narcotics. Despite their importance, research and training regarding detection dogs has involved ambiguity. This is partially due to the fact that the assessment of effectiveness regarding detection dogs continues to be entrenched within a traditional, non-scientific unde…

- Groundnut rosette disease (GRD) is the most devastating disease of groundnuts in sub-Saharan Africa. The disease is caused by synergistic interactions between viruses and virus-like pathogens: groundnut rosette assistor virus (GRAV), groundnut rosette virus (GRV) and a satellite RNA (satRNA). The multi-pathogenic nature of GRD requires efficient diagnostic systems for plant breeding and pathology…
