- Outcomes of real-ear measurement-based fitting in unilateral hearing aid users: Influence of contralateral hearing. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(9):e0358875.Plos
- CONCLUSIONS: In this retrospective cohort of unilateral hearing-aid users, an REM-based fitting pathway was not associated with statistically significant 3-month audiometric or patient-reported outcome differences compared with manufacturer first-fit followed by routine fine-tuning; this does not establish equivalence or isolate the effect of REM. Contralateral-ear hearing was associated with perceived handicap improvement and may be relevant to outcome interpretation and counseling.

- Audiometric Monitoring and Its Determinants in Patients Undergoing Chemoradiotherapy for Head and Neck Cancer. [Journal Article]Med Sci (Basel). 2026 Sep 20; 14(5).MS
- CONCLUSIONS: Audiometric monitoring was incomplete, rarely obtained before irradiation, and steeply age-patterned, whereas rural residence was not associated with lower uptake; structured, exposure-based referral pathways, triggered by planned cisplatin and clinically relevant cochlear dose and applied irrespective of age, are warranted.

- A Quick Test of Cognitive Speed: Age-Related Cognitive Slowing and Screening Thresholds in Turkish-Speaking Adults. [Journal Article]Brain Behav. 2026 Sep; 16(9):e71767.BB
- CONCLUSIONS: The present findings provide preliminary sample-based reference values for perceptual and cognitive processing speed in typically developing Turkish adults and indicate age-related decline in normal AQT performance. Educational attainment showed a small-to-moderate negative association with naming times (r = -0.23 to -0.34, p < 0.05), suggesting relatively faster performance with higher education. These findings provide preliminary reference values, but require validation in larger, more diverse samples.

- The association between reduced bone mineral density and hearing impairment in postmenopausal women. [Journal Article]Am J Otolaryngol. 2026 Sep 19; 47(6):104938. [Online ahead of print]AJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Reduced bone mineral density is significantly associated with impaired auditory function in postmenopausal women, with hearing thresholds worsening progressively from normal BMD to osteopenia and reaching its greatest severity in osteoporosis, independently of age, BMI and duration of menopause. Although causal inference cannot be drawn from this cross-sectional study, these findings are consistent with the systemic nature of osteoporosis and a possible involvement of the otic capsule and inner ear structures. Prospective, longitudinal studies are warranted to further clarify this association.

- Integrated bimodal and bilateral cochlear implant users: who performs better, and how do they compare with normal hearing listeners on a 'real-life' test battery? [Journal Article]Cochlear Implants Int. 2026 Sep 23; :1-14. [Online ahead of print]CI
- CONCLUSIONS: The limited sample size precluded definitive conclusions regarding speech-in-noise differences between integrated bimodal and bilateral CI users. Bilateral CI users demonstrated significantly better spatial listening perfromace than integrated bimodal users, although outcomes remained significantly poorer than those of normal hearing adults.

- Unilateral Hearing Loss: Listening Ability, Social Participation and Adaptive Strategies to Challenges in the Real World. [Journal Article]Audiol Res. 2026 Sep 07; 16(5).AR
- Background: Unilateral hearing loss (UHL) is associated with speech-in-noise difficulties, impaired spatial hearing, and reduced social participation, yet conventional audiological assessments may not capture these real-world consequences. This study characterised the multidimensional functional impact of UHL using an ecologically oriented test battery and explored whether accessible behavioural …

- Association Between Hyperacusis and Tinnitus: Analysis of Prevalence and Impact on Daily Functioning. [Journal Article]Audiol Res. 2026 Aug 26; 16(5).AR
- Background: Hyperacusis is a common, but often underrecognized comorbidity in patients with chronic subjective tinnitus. Reduced sound tolerance is associated with a greater tinnitus-related burden, impaired communication, reduced social participation, and poorer daily functioning. However, published data regarding its prevalence and clinical impact remain limited and inconsistent. Objectives: To…

- Postural Balance, Hearing Loss, and Cognitive Executive Function in the Elderly: Are They Related? [Journal Article]Audiol Res. 2026 Aug 26; 16(5).AR
- Background: There might be a significant association between hearing loss (HL) and cognitive performance or postural imbalance, but how they relate to each other remains unknown. The aim of this study is to gain an understanding of these relationships. Methods: An observational prospective study with subjects ≥ 55 years old divided into groups: normal hearing (group A), untreated HL > 20 decibel …

- Tinnitus selectively disrupts phoneme level speech perception. [Journal Article]J Acoust Soc Am. 2026 Sep 01; 160(3):2514-2529.JA
- Chronic subjective tinnitus has been linked to impaired speech-in-noise perception, yet its impact on phoneme level processing remains unclear. We assessed phoneme discrimination in 49 normal hearing participants (26 with chronic subjective tinnitus and 23 matched controls), with matched audiometric thresholds and supra-threshold processing, and found no statistically significant differences betw…

- Effects of ear canal temperature gradients on altitude-related resonance shifts and hearing aid output. [Journal Article]J Acoust Soc Am. 2026 Sep 01; 160(3):2504-2513.JA
- Understanding how altitude influences hearing aid performance is increasingly important as more users are exposed to high-altitude environments. A previous computational model predicted substantial output reductions near the first-resonance region but assumed that ear canal temperature followed ambient temperature, potentially overestimating resonance-related effects. The present study incorporat…

- Identifying delays via preschool language scales in children who are deaf/hard-of-hearing and use spoken language. [Journal Article]J Deaf Stud Deaf Educ. 2026 Sep 23. [Online ahead of print]JD
- Standardized language tests guide eligibility for speech-language services in children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) and use spoken language. They must be sensitive enough to detect delays during critical early windows. Clinicians have noted that the Preschool Language Scale-Fifth Edition (PLS-5) may lack sensitivity to spoken language delays in young D/HH children, risking under-identi…

- Hearing loss in HEMS operations: a prospective analysis of audiometric tests for temporary hearing threshold shift of an air rescue helicopter crew during several days of emergency duty. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Hearing sensitivity of HEMS crews substantially declines over the course of a shift. Unprotected medical personnel seems more affected than pilots. Hearing threshold level is greater in left ears than in right ears and most severely affects the ability to hear high-frequency sounds. Helmets alone may not provide adequate hearing protection.
