- Effect of an auditory static distractor on the perception of an auditory moving target. [Journal Article]J Acoust Soc Am. 2026 Oct 01; 160(4):3003-3019.JA
- It is known that listeners lose the ability to discriminate the direction of motion of a revolving sound (clockwise vs counterclockwise) beyond a critical velocity ["the upper limit (UL)"], likely due to degraded front-back discrimination. Little is known about how this ability is affected by simultaneously present distractor sounds, despite the real-life importance of tracking moving sounds in t…

- Calcium Pyrophosphate Deposition Disease of the Temporomandibular Joint Extending into the External Auditory Canal and the Middle Ear, Coexisting with Otosclerosis: A Case Report. [Case Reports]J Int Adv Otol. 2026 Sep 21; 22(5):1-5.JI
- Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD) is caused by CPP crystals and rarely forms tumors in joints. The authors describe a case of tumoral CPPD in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), extending into the external auditory canal (EAC) and the middle ear. A 71-year-old man was referred to the department with a tentative diagnosis of CPPD in the right TMJ. Computed tomography showed the mass e…

- Ten-Year Experience with Combined Hyperbaric Oxygen and Steroid Therapy for Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Retrospective Cohort of 332 Patients. [Journal Article]J Int Adv Otol. 2026 Oct 12; 22(5):1-6.JI
- CONCLUSIONS: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy combined with systemic corticosteroids was associated with improved audiometric outcomes in patients with ISSNHL, particularly when initiated early. Shorter time to treatment, greater baseline hearing loss, and the presence of tinnitus emerged as independent predictors of hearing recovery. Overall, these findings suggest an association between early HBOT use and improved audiometric outcomes and support its consideration as an adjunctive component of multimodal treatment strategies for ISSNHL.

- Tinnitus outcomes after cochlear implantation in single-sided deafness: an exploratory prospective multicenter study. [Multicenter Study]Front Neurol. 2026; 17:1970581.FN
- Tinnitus is thought to be suppressed through partial reversal of auditory deafferentation via cochlear implantation (CI). By stimulating the deafferented auditory pathway, multiple studies have revealed that tinnitus is significantly suppressed in 66-92% of patients undergoing CI. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of CI as a treatment for tinnitus and to investigate post-CI audiologic out…

- Consumer preferences for hearing health care information and services as described by older adults surveyed in Australia, Canada, England, and the United States. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Our survey results indicate that older adults preferred to seek and receive HHC through traditional medical settings. These data were collected prior to the pandemic and before some of the recent OTC policy changes; nonetheless, they align with more recent findings and capture the attitudes of individuals who are likely still making HHC decisions today. These findings, therefore, provide contextual evidence about older adults' reported preferences against which future studies of hearing healthcare preferences may be compared.

- Multidomain Auditory Differences in Tinnitus With a Clinically Normal Audiogram: Accounting for Extended High-Frequency Hearing. [Journal Article]J Speech Lang Hear Res. 2026 Oct 12; :1-15. [Online ahead of print]JS
- CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with tinnitus and clinically normal conventional audiograms exhibited subtle differences across multiple auditory domains rather than a single isolated deficit. Several of these differences were attenuated after adjustment for EHF, indicating that EHF hearing should be considered when interpreting auditory findings in this population. These findings support the inclusion of EHF assessment as part of the audiological evaluation of individuals with tinnitus.

- Revisiting Dual-Task Paradigms for Listening Effort: Dual-Task Interference in Adults With and Without Hearing Loss. [Journal Article]Am J Audiol. 2026 Oct 12; :1-13. [Online ahead of print]AJ
- CONCLUSIONS: The DTI approach highlights individual DTI patterns, suggesting dynamic resource allocation and task prioritization under competing demands. These findings provide additional insight into the current use of dual-task paradigms for listening effort and support a broader interpretation of their role, including their potential for individualized counseling.

- The impact of hearing loss on tinnitus-related brain reorganization: evidence from multimodal resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. [Journal Article]Quant Imaging Med Surg. 2026 Oct 01; 16(10):814.QI
- CONCLUSIONS: Hearing loss may differentially shape tinnitus-related brain reorganization. Although both subtypes shared common alterations in limbic and visual association regions, TIN + HL appears to be characterized by disruptions in sensory gating and cognitive control circuits, whereas TIN - HL may involve emotion-regulation network alterations and more pronounced auditory network disconnection. These findings provide a neuroimaging basis for subtype-specific treatment.

- Occupational noise effects on hearing thresholds, speech perception, and self-reported hearing abilities in young adult dental hospital personnel. [Journal Article]
- This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the effects of occupational noise exposure on objective auditory function and self-reported hearing difficulties in young adult dental professionals. It included 56 young adults (aged 18-40), divided into the noise-exposed (n=31) and unexposed control group (n=25). Auditory assessments consisted of pure-tone audiometry (250-8000 Hz), word recognition i…

- Automated Question-and-Answer-Based Speech-In-Noise Hearing Test Using a Large Language Model. [Journal Article]Trends Hear. 2026 Jan-Dec; 30:23312165261479670.TH
- A conversational speech-in-noise test administered without human supervision is desirable to reduce the need to attend the clinic. This study aimed to create and evaluate a novel question-and-answer-based speech-in-noise test called 'CHAT', where stimuli were synthesised using text-to-speech (TTS), responses captured using automatic speech recognition (ASR), and responses evaluated using a large …

- A rapid, machine-learning readout of cochlear neural degeneration that transfers from animals to humans. [Journal Article]bioRxiv. 2026 Sep 30.B
- Standard hearing tests miss cochlear neural degeneration (CND), the loss of synapses between inner hair cells and auditory nerve fibers that may underlie unexplained hearing difficulty in roughly one in ten adults. Envelope following responses (EFRs) can index this neural loss noninvasively, but conventional protocols are too slow for clinical use. We tested a dynamic amplitude-modulated (dAM) EF…

- Precision Phenotyping With Audiometric Data and Gene Discovery for Sensorineural Hearing Loss. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: In this genetic association study, precision phenotyping using audiometric PTAs improved genetic discovery for SNHL compared with diagnostic code-based approaches. Higher heritability estimates, identification of genome-wide significant loci, and stronger polygenic risk estimation indicate that quantitative hearing measures better capture genetic architecture, supporting precision medicine in hearing health.

- Hearing Screening Among Underserved US Adults: A Scoping Review of Modalities and Determinants. [Review]Laryngoscope. 2026 Oct 08. [Online ahead of print]L
- CONCLUSIONS: A variety of modalities are being utilized to conduct hearing screening for adult populations. The feasibility of implementation varies by study setting and is supported by facilitators including integration into primary care, encouragement by providers, and patient education. In order to improve the rates of hearing screening among all communities, including those that are underserved, it is important to acknowledge both the barriers and facilitators to screening. Consistent guidelines, a focus on implementation, and partnerships across providers will be most beneficial in this pursuit.
