- Photorin controls the intracellular activation and bacteriotoxic effect of Photorhabdus laumondii protease S during its expression in Escherichia coli. [Journal Article]Arch Biochem Biophys. 2026 Jan; 775:110672.AB
- An important role in the regulation of protease activity in living systems is played by their propeptides and endogenous protein inhibitors. Both are capable of repressing enzyme activity, ensuring it occurs only at the right time and/or in the right place. Therefore, propeptides and inhibitors may appear to perform the same function. However, many proteases have both, but the interplay between t…

- BglaTNB6, a tailocin produced by a plant-associated nonpathogenic bacterium, prevents rice seed-borne bacterial diseases. [Journal Article]
- Rice seed-borne diseases caused by the bacterial pathogens Burkholderia glumae and B. plantarii pose a major threat to rice production worldwide. To manage these diseases in a sustainable manner, a biocontrol strategy is crucial. In this study, we showed that B. gladioli NB6 (NB6), a nonpathogenic bacterium, strongly protects rice from infection caused by the above-mentioned pathogens. NB6 was is…

- Decolorization of azo dyes by a novel aerobic bacterial strain Bacillus cereus strain ROC. [Journal Article]
- Synthetic dyes are widely used as colorant compounds in various industries for different purposes. Among all the dyestuffs, azo dyes constitute the largest and the most used class of dyes. These dyes and their intermediate products are common contaminants of ground water and soil in developing countries. Biological methods have been found to be promising for the treatment and degradation of these…

- Bacteria-Based Synergistic Therapy in the Backdrop of Synthetic Biology. [Review]
- Although the synergistic effect of traditional therapies combined with tumor targeting or immunotherapy can significantly reduce mortality, cancer remains the leading cause of disease related death to date. Limited clinical response rate, drug resistance and off-target effects, to a large extent, impede the ceilings of clinical efficiency. To get out from the dilemmas mentioned, bacterial therapy…

- The Bacteriostatic Activity of 2-Phenylethanol Derivatives Correlates with Membrane Binding Affinity. [Journal Article]
- The hydrophobic tails of aliphatic primary alcohols do insert into the hydrophobic core of a lipid bilayer. Thereby, they disrupt hydrophobic interactions between the lipid molecules, resulting in a decreased lipid order, i.e., an increased membrane fluidity. While aromatic alcohols, such as 2-phenylethanol, also insert into lipid bilayers and disturb the membrane organization, the impact of arom…

- Coordination Complexes to Combat Bacterial Infections: Recent Developments, Current Directions and Future Opportunities. [Review]
- Drug discovery aimed at the efficient eradication of life-threatening bacterial infections, especially in light of the emergence of multi-drug resistance of pathogenic bacteria, has remained a challenge for medicinal chemists over the past several decades. As nutrient acquisition and metabolism at the host-pathogen interface become better elucidated, new drug targets continue to emerge. Metal hom…

- Role of Glutathione in Buffering Excess Intracellular Copper in Streptococcus pyogenes. [Journal Article]
- Copper (Cu) is an essential metal for bacterial physiology but in excess it is bacteriotoxic. To limit Cu levels in the cytoplasm, most bacteria possess a transcriptionally responsive system for Cu export. In the Gram-positive human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus [GAS]), this system is encoded by the copYAZ operon. This study demonstrates that although the site of GAS infe…

- Bioadhesion in the oral cavity and approaches for biofilm management by surface modifications. [Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Despite many promising approaches for modulation of biofilm formation in the oral cavity, the ubiquitous phenomenon of bioadsorption and adhesion pellicle formation in the challenging oral milieu masks surface properties and therewith hampers low-fouling strategies.

- High-Level Production of Bacteriotoxic Phospholipase A1 in Bacterial Host Pseudomonas fluorescens Via ABC Transporter-Mediated Secretion and Inducible Expression. [Journal Article]
- : Bacterial phospholipase A1 (PLA1) is used in various industrial fields because it can catalyze the hydrolysis, esterification, and transesterification of phospholipids to their functional derivatives. It also has a role in the degumming process of crude plant oils. However, bacterial expression of the foreign PLA1-encoding gene was generally hampered because intracellularly expressed PLA1 is in…

- Biomimetic multilayer coatings deliver gentamicin and reduce implant-related osteomyelitis in rats. [Journal Article]
- Implant-related infections like periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) are still a challenging issue in orthopedic surgery. In this study, we present a prophylactic anti-infective approach based on a local delivery of the antibiotic gentamicin. The local delivery is achieved via a nanoscale polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coating that leaves the bulk material properties of the implant unaffected …

- Cytotoxicity Test Based on Human Cells Labeled with Fluorescent Proteins: Fluorimetry, Photography, and Scanning for High-Throughput Assay. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: The fluorescent signal of living cells is detected without disturbing them and adding any reagents, thus allowing to investigate time-dependent cytotoxicity effects on the same sample of cells. A fast, simple and cost-effective assay is suggested for cytotoxicity evaluation based on mammalian cells expressing fluorescent proteins and commonly used laboratory equipment.

- [Laparoscopic pyelolithotomy and its role in modern surgery of nephrolithiasis]. [Journal Article]Urologiia. 2017 Sep; (4):12-17.U
- CONCLUSIONS: We believe that laparoscopic pyelolithotomy supplemented by transabdominal flexible pyelocalycoscopy may be recommended for surgical management of patients with "giant", multiple and infected kidney stones, because the length of their percutaneous removal is beyond the recommended time intervals and it is accompanied by an increased risk of septic complications.
- Mitochondria-targeted antioxidants as highly effective antibiotics. [Journal Article]
- Mitochondria-targeted antioxidants are known to alleviate mitochondrial oxidative damage that is associated with a variety of diseases. Here, we showed that SkQ1, a decyltriphenyl phosphonium cation conjugated to a quinone moiety, exhibited strong antibacterial activity towards Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis, Mycobacterium sp. and Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Photobacterium phosphoreu…

- The Genomic Sequence of the Oral Pathobiont Strain NI1060 Reveals Unique Strategies for Bacterial Competition and Pathogenicity. [Journal Article]
- Strain NI1060 is an oral bacterium responsible for periodontitis in a murine ligature-induced disease model. To better understand its pathogenicity, we have determined the complete sequence of its 2,553,982 bp genome. Although closely related to Pasteurella pneumotropica, a pneumonia-associated rodent commensal based on its 16S rRNA, the NI1060 genomic content suggests that they are different spe…

- Environmental fate and effect assessment of thioridazine and its transformation products formed by photodegradation. [Journal Article]
- An experimental and in silico quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) approach was applied to assess the environmental fate and effects of the antipsychotic drug Thioridazine (THI). The sunlight-driven attenuation of THI was simulated using a Xenon arc lamp. The photodegradation reached the complete primary elimination, whereas 97% of primary elimination and 11% of mineralization was …
