- Research into key adolescent health domains, like problematic screen-based media use, sleep health, and physical activity, are frequently limited by error-prone self-report-based measures. To improve the measurement of such behaviors, the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ABCD), a diverse longitudinal cohort study of nearly 12,000 U.S. youth (ages 9-10 at Baseline), includes remote se…

- CONCLUSIONS: The addition of metastasis-directed ablation added to first-line systemic therapy did not improve PFS or OS in patients with oligometastatic breast cancer. Ablation should not be routinely used outside of clinical trials, except for palliation.

- Spatial and genetic dynamics of Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich protein2 in sub-Saharan Africa. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(10):e0358132.Plos
- CONCLUSIONS: Our findings imply that the dominant evolutionary pressure in sSA is promoting the parasite's biological fitness and the diversity of Pfhrp2.However, the impact of this genetic diversity on diagnostic performance was not assessed as we could not obtain relevant mRDT test data for each country.

- Final Diagnoses and Outcomes After Paramedic-Suspected ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction. [Journal Article]Ann Emerg Med. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]AE
- CONCLUSIONS: Within this statewide pathway population, paramedic-suspected STEMI identified a diagnostically heterogeneous, high-acuity group, in which approximately 60% of patients with a recorded discharge diagnosis had confirmed STEMI. These findings describe the suspected STEMI pathway population and should not be generalized to all confirmed STEMI or to all chest pain presentations. Emergency medical services and emergency department STEMI systems should preserve rapid access to reperfusion while supporting early diagnostic refinement and risk stratification for serious alternative diagnoses.

- Feasibility of Virtual Reality Immersion in Reducing Pain and Anxiety during External Fixator Care Procedures. [Journal Article]Strategies Trauma Limb Reconstr. 2026 Jan-Apr; 21(1):8-16.ST
- CONCLUSIONS: Virtual reality immersion during fixator care appears feasible and well tolerated in paediatric and adolescent patients. Observed trends suggest potential benefit for anxiety reduction, particularly with early VR exposure; however, larger studies are needed to evaluate clinical efficacy.

- A framework for increasing scanner efficiency: the utility of a 'Short aorta' protocol to increase cardiac MRI capacity at the Yorkshire Heart Centre. [Journal Article]Eur Heart J Imaging Methods Pract. 2026 Aug; 4(3):qyag163.EH
- There are rising demands for cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) worldwide. Thoracic aorta assessment is a common CMR indication. There are many benefits to shorter scan times including improved patient experience, as well as efficiency of a service. This service development project aimed to optimize the current 'aorta' protocol in a large tertiary CMR centre in the United Kingdom (wh…

- DHODH is the key target of the KDM4 inhibitor QC6352 in glioblastoma stem cells. [Journal Article]Nat Chem Biol. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]NC
- Histone lysine demethylase 4 (KDM4) enzymes are frequently overexpressed in cancer and are considered to be promising therapeutic targets. QC6352, which is widely used as a best-in-class KDM4 chemical probe, shows potent antitumor activity across cancer models. Using comprehensive chemical biology approaches in glioblastoma models, we demonstrate that the efficacy of QC6352 and that of its clinic…

- Are associations of childhood body mass index trajectories with early-onset coronary heart disease modified by parental history of cardiovascular disease? [Journal Article]Int J Obes (Lond). 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with the obesity childhood BMI trajectory had a more than 2-fold increased hazard of early-onset CVD, even when accounting for parental CVD. With the rise in early-onset CVD, our findings highlight excess childhood adiposity as an important contributor to the early disease origins and reinforce the importance of addressing the growing obesity burden of childhood obesity.

- Reconsidering risk: implications for violence intervention programmes. [Journal Article]Inj Prev. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]IP
- This commentary critically examines the language of risk in firearm violence prevention research and practice. While federal, state and health system investments have been made to reduce levels of firearm violence, intervention models and broader discourses about gun violence often employ narrow definitions of risk to define the issue. We assess how frameworks used in understanding firearm violen…

- Real-world data-enabled, 2-randomisation, adaptive trial to determine the clinical efficacy and safety of widely used enteral feeds in preterm babies: the COLLABORATE trial - protocol. [Journal Article]BMJ Open. 2026 Oct 06; 16(10):e125163.BO
- Enteral feed type is widely believed to affect brain growth and development directly as well as influencing the risk of necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), a leading cause of death and neuro-impairment in extremely preterm babies. Own mother's milk (OMM) enhances neurodevelopment and reduces NEC. However, most babies born below 29 weeks gestation require some supplementary feeds during their neonata…

- Effect of intensive care unit sedation strategy on patient-reported experience: secondary mediation analysis of the A2B randomised controlled trial. [Journal Article]Anaesthesia. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]A
- CONCLUSIONS: Dexmedetomidine compared with propofol sedation strategy may be associated with increased recalled awareness of surroundings, which is considered a favourable indicator of ICU experience. Together with the primary A2B trial results, which showed no effect on ventilation duration, these hypothesis-generating findings in a subgroup of the A2B cohort do not support the use of dexmedetomidine over propofol based on patient-reported experience. Based on our findings, we advocate that a personalised approach to sedation strategies should continue to be used.

- Janus Kinase Inhibitors for Acute Severe Ulcerative Colitis: Comparing Upadacitinib to Tofacitinib and Rescue to Sequential Salvage therapy. [Journal Article]Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]CG
- CONCLUSIONS: JAK inhibitors were effective for ASUC with a reassuring safety profile. Upadacitinib use resulted in a significantly lower rate of colectomy by week 52, with higher rates of clinical remission, CFCR, and biochemical remission during follow-up. Sequential salvage therapy may represent a viable therapeutic option for patients otherwise facing colectomy.

- Resveratrol protects primary hepatocytes against senescence induced by endogenous toxic metabolites. [Journal Article]Mech Ageing Dev. 2026 Oct 06; :112261. [Online ahead of print]MA
- Liver dysfunction rates increase markedly with ageing causing the plasma concentrations of toxic endogenous metabolites to rise. We demonstrated that brief exposure of HepG2 cells in vitro to a liver-derived toxic metabolite cocktail triggers a distinct state of cellular senescence termed senescence induced by liver toxins (SILT). SILT combines classical features of senescence (loss of proliferat…
