- Differential Patterns of Brain Connectivity Alterations in Patients with Back Pain Chronification versus Recovery: A Resting-State FMRI Study. [Journal Article]J Pain. 2026 Jul 12; :106347. [Online ahead of print]JP
- Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have demonstrated that back pain, particularly chronic back pain, is associated with altered functional brain connectivity, especially in regions involved in the modulation of pain and emotion regulation. Our study investigated dysconnectivity patterns in subacute back pain patients to distinguish those who develop chronic back pain from those who rec…

- Automated Review of Patient Records: Privacy-Preserving Large Language Models for Identifying Incident Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy at Scale. [Journal Article]Ophthalmol Sci. 2026 Aug; 6(8):101265.OS
- CONCLUSIONS: Privacy-preserving agentic LLM approaches can achieve high PPV for acute NAION case identification using unstructured ophthalmology longitudinal electronic health records. These results exceed the performance of using structured ICD codes to identify cases, offering a scalable, efficient method for case identification in retrospective research while maintaining patient confidentiality and local data control. This method has application for enhancing research efficiency and accuracy for studies on NAION risk factors, with potential applicability to other conditions requiring complex diagnostic review.

- Precision meets speed through an FPGA-based natively sparse Ising machine for combinatorial optimization. [Journal Article]Nat Commun. 2026 Jul 11. [Online ahead of print]NC
- Ising machines constitute a framework to solve combinatorial optimization problems efficiently utilizing dynamical interacting systems. Typical approaches simulate the dynamics on digital hardware, which is strongly dependent on matrix-vector operations, and were shown to experience acceleration of several orders of magnitude by parallel processing on FPGAs. However, optimization on single FPGAs …

- Fermentation of plant-based foods: Microbial consortia and their impacts on composition, sensory quality, and health benefits of food products. [Review]Adv Food Nutr Res. 2026; 120:45-108.AF
- Fermented plant-based foods have obtained growing interests for their improved nutrition profile, enhanced flavor and taste, as well as their health-promoting properties. Fermentation using lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts can eliminate antinutritional components and off-flavor compounds present in plant matrices while also generating beneficial metabolites. The interaction between fermentat…

- A scoping review of algorithmic equity, data diversity, and inclusive design in the transformer era of clinical NLP. [Review]J Biomed Inform. 2026 Jul 11; :105077. [Online ahead of print]JB
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the need to move beyond descriptive equity audits toward equity-by-design approaches. We translate the synthesized evidence into an equity-by-design roadmap that embeds fairness, inclusivity, and accountability across the full lifecycle of healthcare NLP systems. We argue that equity must shift from reactive evaluation to proactive design, incorporating participatory governance, fairness-aware training objectives, and continuous monitoring to address Data Diversity Debt and reduce the risk of reproducing health disparities.

- The combined use of natural language processing and electronic health records data to identify historical tolerances of β-lactams and promote clinician confidence in future use. [Journal Article]Health Syst (Basingstoke). 2026; 15(1):42-50.HS
- We used natural language processing (NLP) to improve the utility of clinical decision support (CDS) β-lactam allergy alerts and promote informed allergy evaluation. NLP was performed on a corpus of clinical notes from hospital-based encounters to identify previous tolerance of β-lactam products using a rule-based approach. Historical tolerance of β-lactams was then combined with structured electr…

- Build fair machine learning models to predict adverse outcomes for heart failure patients with preserved ejection fraction and with reduced ejection fraction. [Journal Article]JAMIA Open. 2026 Aug; 9(4):ooag136.JO
- CONCLUSIONS: Subtype-specific, fairness-aware ML models for HFpEF and HFrEF provided interpretable 6-month risk stratification and enabled subgroup fairness assessment. Integrating clinical and SDoH information added modest discrimination gains while strengthening interpretation and fairness assessment. These findings support further validation of explainable, equity-aware HF prediction models.

- Red Blood Cell Deformation in a Microfluidic Sudden Expansion at Supraphysiological Strain Rates. [Journal Article]Biophys J. 2026 Jul 10. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- Red blood cell (RBC) deformability is critical for in vivo tissue oxygenation and has been studied in ideal, canonical flows. In vitro frameworks are needed to study RBC deformation in more complex flows than those studied previously, as complex hemodynamics are common in blood-wetted medical devices and valvular pathologies. In this study, pseudo-3-dimensional RBC deformation and orientation ang…
