- Blood eosinophils as predictors of asthma exacerbations in adults: converging evidence from mendelian randomization, single-cell transcriptomics, and a two-center longitudinal cohort. [Multicenter Study]Front Immunol. 2026; 17:1927894.FI
- CONCLUSIONS: Peripheral blood eosinophils may play an important role in asthma. They are especially promising as potential clinical predictors of asthma exacerbation. However, the mechanisms underlying their increase are complex. We speculate that three pathways may be involved: bone marrow release, peripheral survival, and peripheral activation. Therefore, both the clinical utility and the specific biological mechanisms of peripheral blood eosinophils still require further validation.

- Effects of acute sleep deprivation on individuals across different APOE genotypes: a randomized controlled trial protocol. [Randomized Controlled Trial]Front Neurol. 2026; 17:1805467.FN
- Sleep is crucial for the clearance of metabolic waste products. Sleep deprivation leads to the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau proteins, which may be mediated by impaired glymphatic clearance, thereby contributing to the hallmark pathologies of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene, particularly the APOE ε4 allele, is a major genetic risk factor for AD and is also clos…

- Dental composite-resin materials and oral-systemic health: clinical toxicology insights. [Review]Front Public Health. 2026; 14:1860620.FP
- CONCLUSIONS: Resin composites pose a measurable, if generally low-level, toxicological risk through monomer elution and, increasingly, MNP release. Adequate operative technique substantially reduces patient exposure. Vulnerable populations, including children, pregnant women, and dental personnel, warrant particular attention. Standardized biomonitoring protocols, updated regulatory thresholds, and dedicated in vivo studies are needed to characterize the long-term oral-systemic health implications of these ubiquitous materials.

- EHA Guidelines on the management of children and adults with hemoglobin SC disease. [Journal Article]Hemasphere. 2026 Oct; 10(10):e70506.H
- HbSC disease is the second most common type of sickle cell disease (SCD) in populations of African origin. Although it is often grouped together with other types of SCD, particularly sickle cell anemia (HbSS), it has unique pathophysiology and a different spectrum of laboratory and clinical features. Compared to HbSS, hemoglobin levels are higher, HbF is lower at less than 5%, and most vaso-occlu…

- Markedly Elevated CA 19-9 in Type I Mirizzi Syndrome in the Absence of Malignancy: A Case Report. [Case Reports]Int Med Case Rep J. 2026; 19:641943.IM
- Mirizzi syndrome (MS) is a rare complication of long-standing cholelithiasis in which an impacted gallstone causes extrinsic compression of the common hepatic duct. Markedly elevated carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) is strongly associated with pancreaticobiliary malignancies, but severe benign biliary obstruction can also cause substantial elevations, presenting a diagnostic challenge. We pres…

- Association Between Blood Transfusion Volume and Adverse Clinical Outcomes in Chronic Liver Disease: A Retrospective Observational Study. [Journal Article]Cureus. 2026 Sep; 18(9):e115857.C
- Background Blood transfusion is frequently required in patients with chronic liver disease, particularly during episodes of gastrointestinal bleeding. However, excessive transfusion may increase portal venous pressure and adversely affect clinical outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the association between transfusion volume and adverse clinical outcomes in patients with chronic liver disease.…

- The role of neurofilament light chain and other fluid biomarkers in cerebellar ataxias. [Review]Brain Commun. 2026; 8(5):fcag313.BC
- The genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity of hereditary ataxias complicates the design of clinical trials since each ataxia progresses at different rates. Consequently, robust biomarkers are urgently needed to monitor therapeutic efficacy and safety of potential therapeutic interventions. Neurofilament light chain has emerged as a leading candidate, serving as a sensitive pharmacodynamic biomarker…

- Brain photobiomodulation therapy for acute sport-related concussion: a randomized, single-blinded, pilot clinical trial (RECOVERY study). [Randomized Controlled Trial]Front Neurol. 2026; 17:1894623.FN
- CONCLUSIONS: No difference in tolerability was detected between the 5 and 10 Hz modalities, although the study was neither designed nor powered to establish equivalence. Both conditions were well tolerated. In the absence of a sham comparator, secondary outcome data are hypothesis-generating and cannot be described in terms of efficacy. However, these data still provide the feasibility and variability estimates required to design an adequately powered, double-blind, sham-controlled trial in an indication that currently lacks disease-modifying treatment.

- ISG Task Force on Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding (UGIB)-Comparison of Risk Scores in Nonvariceal Bleeding-A Prospective Multicenter Study. [Journal Article]JGH Open. 2026 Oct; 10(10):e70463.JO
- CONCLUSIONS: GBS was more accurate and had more desirable clinical characteristics in predicting the need for a transfusion for hospitalized patients than TRS. However, both GBS and TRS have poor to modest predictive capability for 30-day mortality and rebleeding. They do not, then, appear to be useful as screening tools to identify people at risk for those two outcomes in a hospital setting.

- Effect of a family-centered educational intervention on caregiver diabetes knowledge and fasting plasma glucose in older rural women with type 2 diabetes: a quasi-experimental study. [Journal Article]J Diabetes Metab Disord. 2026 Dec; 25(2):281.JD
- CONCLUSIONS: Family-centered education was associated with a significant improvement in diabetes-related knowledge among caregivers of older women with type 2 diabetes. Although FBS decreased within both groups, the absence of a significant between-group difference indicates that an intervention-specific effect on glycemic control could not be established. Family-centered education may therefore be useful for improving caregiver knowledge, while further research using appropriate longitudinal analyses and longer follow-up is needed to determine its effect on glycemic control.

- Sleep restriction induces histoarchitectural and cellular remodeling in the rat distal colon: a peripheral consequence of circadian disruption. [Journal Article]Biochem Biophys Rep. 2026 Dec; 48:102812.BB
- Sleep restriction disrupts circadian organization and represents a behavioral condition with systemic consequences that extend beyond the central nervous system. In this study, we evaluated structural and cellular changes in the distal colon of rats exposed to sustained sleep restriction. Sixteen male Rattus norvegicus were assigned to a control group (n = 8) or a sleep-restricted group (n = 8) a…

- Inflammatory landscape of Gardnerella vaginalis-associated bacterial vaginosis in rats: an integrated multi-omics analysis. [Journal Article]Front Immunol. 2026; 17:1914434.FI
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that the G. vaginalis-associated BV-like phenotype is linked to vaginal microbial alterations, enhanced AA-related metabolism, compartment-specific remodeling of TRP metabolism, and upregulation of proteins related to uterine TLR/NF-κB inflammatory signaling. This microbiome-metabolome-immune network may help explain how G. vaginalis-associated vaginal dysbiosis contributes to BV-like inflammatory changes and may be related to endometrial inflammation.
