  • Is it safe to use surgical instruments with debris from a previous surgery after sterilization? [Journal Article]
    Bone Joint Res. 2026 Oct 01; 15(10):1176-1182.Semeshchenko D, Farinati A, … Lucero CMBJ
  • CONCLUSIONS: Autoclave sterilization was effective in eliminating microorganisms from surgical instruments with retained biological debris. Although no apparent structural deformities of microorganisms were observed by SEM in the mixed biofilms, no bacterial growth was detected after sterilization, supporting the microbiological effectiveness of autoclave sterilization even in the presence of retained biological debris. These findings provide microbiological evidence supporting current sterilization practices, and highlight the need for further studies evaluating alternative sterilization methods such as ethylene oxide or plasma.

  • Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common neurological complication following surgery and anesthesia, particularly in older adults, and is associated with delayed recovery, prolonged hospitalization, and reduced quality of life. Orthopedic and spinal procedures are linked to a relatively high risk of POCD; however, preclinical models that closely reflect the perioperative features of…

  • The definitive reconstruction of a pilon fracture can be technically demanding and requires meticulous preoperative planning. Besides selecting the appropriate surgical approach and implant, particular attention must be paid to the reduction strategy, including the sequence of reconstruction, the required reduction maneuver and the necessary instruments. Successful execution of the surgical plan …
