- The effects of use of medications on striatal dopamine transporter binding assessed by [[123]I]I-FP-CIT SPECT in patients with Parkinson's disease from the PPMI cohort. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Use of methylphenidate and modafinil in particular is associated with significantly reduced striatal [[123]I]I-FP-CIT binding in PD patients. Medication use should be carefully considered when interpreting DAT SPECT scans. Temporary discontinuation may be considered in selected cases when clinically appropriate.

- Sex Differences in Fatal Poisoning Among Drug Users in France: An Exploratory Analysis of the DRAMES Register. [Journal Article]Womens Health Issues. 2026 Aug 13. [Online ahead of print]WH
- CONCLUSIONS: The observed differences in causes of death between women and men, specifically more polydrug related-deaths (especially with pharmaceuticals), highlight the need to address female-specific concerns. Further studies and resources are needed to develop programs dedicated to women with substance use disorders.

- Physiological and molecular effects of individual and mixtures of drugs of abuse in Crassostrea virginica larvae. [Journal Article]Ecotoxicol Environ Saf. 2026 Aug 13; 323:120662. [Online ahead of print]EE
- Drugs of abuse (DAs) are increasingly detected in surface waters, yet their effects on marine organisms remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the impacts of environmentally relevant concentrations (100 and 1000 ng L[-1]) of cannabinol, codeine, and methamphetamine, individually and in mixtures, on the growth and development of Crassostrea virginica larvae. Eight-day exposures significant…

- Short-term risk of falls among initiators of controlled-release tapentadol versus oxycodone in New South Wales between 2014 and 2020: A population-based retrospective cohort study. [Journal Article]PLoS Med. 2026 Aug; 23(8):e1004950.PM
- CONCLUSIONS: Tapentadol (SR) was associated with a lower risk of falls than oxycodone (CR) up to four weeks after initiation, although absolute differences were small. The reduction in risk may be an important consideration in older patients where the consequences of falls are most severe.

- Teacher-reported kindergarten development among children exposed to prescription opioids during pregnancy. [Journal Article]PLoS One. 2026; 21(8):e0355101.Plos
- CONCLUSIONS: In the matched cohort study, exposure to prescription opioids during pregnancy was associated with a higher risk of developmental vulnerability later in childhood. In the sibling analysis, no differences were observed. These data strongly suggest that families should be offered early and long-term developmental screening and family-centered support.

- Thalamo-accumbal circuit adaptations following extended oxycodone abstinence. [Journal Article]
- Opioid use disorder is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and heightened relapse vulnerability following abstinence, a phenomenon known as incubation of craving. Although preclinical data suggest similar behavioral expression of opioid use between sexes, conclusive evidence on sex differences in craving and relapse across abstinence periods remains lacking. Here, we investigated the effects…

- Direct coupling of commercial coated blades with low-temperature plasma ionization mass spectrometry by micro-solvent aided soft thermal desorption. [Journal Article]
- Coated blades have been widely used with ambient ionization mass spectrometry (AIMS) using electrospray as ionization source. This article explores the coupling of commercial blades, containing hydrophilic-lipophilic balance particles (HLB), with soft ionization by chemical reaction in transfer mass spectrometry using a dedicated thermal desorber as interface. Commercial HLB-blades use polyacrylo…

- Trends and Characteristics of Opioid Use During Pregnancy Between 2010 and 2023: A French Nationwide Drug Utilization Study. [Journal Article]Eur J Pain. 2026 Aug; 30(7):e70333.EJ
- CONCLUSIONS: In France, opioid use in the context of pregnancy is not infrequent and almost exclusively driven by short-term use of weak opioids. It is strongly associated with maternal vulnerability and low-income status. Although overall opioid exposure stabilized since 2016, the continuous rise in tramadol use warrants further monitoring.

- Isolated Allergic Conjunctivitis Induced by an Oral Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID), Confirmed by an Oral Provocation Test: A Case Report. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Jun; 18(6):e111704.C
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a well-known cause of systemic hypersensitivity (urticaria, angioedema, and bronchospasm). Ocular involvement is usually described as merely a component of a systemic reaction. It should be distinguished from the local toxicity of topical ocular NSAIDs. To our knowledge, very few cases of isolated allergic conjunctivitis induced by oral NSAIDs hav…

- CONCLUSIONS: Low-THC oral CBD provides non-inferior pain control to codeine-acetaminophen following PRK with similar recovery outcomes and minimal side effects. Mild sensorium changes may occur in surgically naïve patients taking CBD. CBD may represent a viable opioid-sparing alternative in refractive surgery or acute pain management.

- Computational Insights into the Molecular Synergy of Paracetamol and Codeine. [Journal Article]Life (Basel). 2026 Jul 02; 16(7).L
- Combination analgesic therapy is commonly used to improve pain control, yet conventional molecular docking approaches typically evaluate individual ligands and provide limited insight into potential intermolecular associations between co-administered drugs. In this study, paracetamol, codeine, and their proposed 1:1 and 2:1 non-covalent assemblies were investigated using lipophilicity analysis, m…

- Misuse of over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription-only medicines (POMs) is increasingly recognised as a public health and medicine-safety concern. Although specialist substance misuse services (SMS) increasingly support people affected by OTC/POM misuse, little is known about how SMS staff perceive the characteristics, challenges, and treatment needs of this population. This study explored the ex…

- A scoping review of interventions employed by community pharmacists to reduce or prevent misuse-related harm to consumers of over-the-counter codeine-containing products. [Journal Article]Int J Pharm Pract. 2026 Jul 23. [Online ahead of print]IJ
- CONCLUSIONS: While codeine remains available to purchase, pharmacists hold responsibility for managing the risks posed by these products. Tools should be developed to support pharmacists with screening and assessment of codeine misuse and to aid their discussions with affected individuals. Inter-agency working between pharmacies, primary care, and specialist addictions services should be improved. Pharmacists require more access to addiction-specific training. Real-time monitoring systems to track and quantify codeine misuse within pharmacies should be developed, which would also aid research into the demographics of this population. Further research is required into the efficacy of up-scheduling codeine to a prescription-only medication in reducing codeine misuse.
