- Large-FOV RGBD imaging via structured PSF coding in a bio-inspired monocentric system. [Journal Article]Opt Express. 2026 Oct 05; 34(20):37642-37659.OE
- High-fidelity large-field-of-view (LFOV) 3D sensing, essential for autonomous platforms, is hindered by the coupling of anisotropic off-axis aberrations and the ill-posed nature of monocular depth estimation. To address this fundamental physical bottleneck, we propose the bio-inspired monocentric imaging (BMI) framework, a holistic co-design integrating a monocentric optical topology with a physi…

- Comparison of two automated pupillometry indices in patients with acute brain injury: the prospective multicentre LYNX cohort study. [Multicenter Study]Crit Care. 2026 Sep 28; 30(1).CC
- CONCLUSIONS: NPi and QPi were correlated and both predicted 6-month outcome, but QPi was far more sensitive to anaesthetics, which probably confounds its association with intracranial hypertension. The indices are not interchangeable in sedated critically ill patients.

- Effect of intensive care unit sedation strategy on patient-reported experience: secondary mediation analysis of the A2B randomised controlled trial. [Journal Article]Anaesthesia. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]A
- CONCLUSIONS: Dexmedetomidine compared with propofol sedation strategy may be associated with increased recalled awareness of surroundings, which is considered a favourable indicator of ICU experience. Together with the primary A2B trial results, which showed no effect on ventilation duration, these hypothesis-generating findings in a subgroup of the A2B cohort do not support the use of dexmedetomidine over propofol based on patient-reported experience. Based on our findings, we advocate that a personalised approach to sedation strategies should continue to be used.

- Cerebral malaria (CM) remains a leading contributor to paediatric mortality and long-term neurocognitive sequelae in sub-Saharan Africa, driven by a complex interplay between Plasmodium falciparum sequestration and host endothelial dysfunction. Clinical recovery is typically defined by parasite clearance and neurological improvement; however, the temporal relationship between vascular restoration…

- Translation and comprehensive validation of the Neurological Outcome Scale for Traumatic Brain Injury (NOS-TBI) into Brazilian Portuguese. [Journal Article]Arq Neuropsiquiatr. 2026 Sep; 84(9):1-9.AN
- CONCLUSIONS: The Brazilian Portuguese NOS-TBI is valid, reliable, and can be used in clinical practice and scientific studies. Globally, developing relevant and reliable clinical scales in different languages, such as the NOS-TBI, can facilitate multinational studies in the field.

- Orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode recognition of vortex beams is essential for free-space optical communication; however, it becomes considerably more challenging under slant-path propagation where atmospheric turbulence and optical aberrations jointly distort the beam structure. Here, we propose an improved multi-task residual network, termed DCA-ResNet18, for the simultaneous recognition of t…

- Investigating the effect of buprenorphine on pain in the acute phase of patients with mild traumatic brain injury: a double-blind clinical trial. [Journal Article]Neurol Res. 2026 Oct 06; :1-23. [Online ahead of print]NR
- CONCLUSIONS: Buprenorphine is an effective drug in the relief of pain among men with mild TBI. Nevertheless, the lack of generalization to women due to the exclusive selection of men, who make up most trauma patients (motorcyclists), and the fact that the research is done as a pilot study with a short follow-up period of two weeks, no neuropsychological tests conducted, and only one domain used to test cognitive function prevents us from drawing any conclusions on this matter.

- Reintubation in the ICU: A Prospective Observational Study of Its Impact on Recovery Outcomes and Mortality. [Journal Article]Cureus. 2026 Sep; 18(9):e115813.C
- Background Extubation is an important step in the recovery of critically ill patients, but some patients deteriorate after removal of the endotracheal tube and require reintubation. Extubation failure can prolong intensive care and is associated with poor outcomes. This study examined the factors associated with reintubation and the clinical outcomes of patients who failed planned extubation. Met…

- CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative HOA measurements showed statistically significant though modest associations with changes in uncorrected visual acuities. In some instances, the estimated change improved by including information regarding preoperative refractive error. Validation in larger cohorts is required before clinical implementation.

- A case of acute lithium encephalopathy associated with elevated myelin basic protein levels in cerebrospinal fluid. [Journal Article]PCN Rep. 2026 Dec; 5(4):e70422.PR
- CONCLUSIONS: The elevated CSF MBP level suggests that toxic lithium exposure may induce CNS demyelination. While the clinical symptoms were reversible in this patient, such a mechanism may underpin the prolonged or permanent neurological deficits seen in SILENT.

- Normothermic regional perfusion in controlled donation after circulatory death liver transplantation: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis versus non-NRP and brain-death donors. [Systematic Review]Transpl Int. 2026; 39:17154.TI
- Normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) may mitigate ischemic injury in controlled donation after circulatory death (cDCD) liver transplantation. We updated the most recent meta-analysis (search closed June 2023) by incorporating subsequent evidence and comparing NRP with non-NRP cDCD and with donation after brain death (DBD). We performed a systematic review of five databases and random-effects me…

- Myxoedema coma in a patient with alcohol dependence: a diagnostic pitfall. [Case Reports]BMJ Case Rep. 2026 Oct 05; 19(10).BC
- Myxoedema coma is a rare but life-threatening manifestation of hypothyroidism with high associated mortality. We present the case of a man in his sixties with known hypothyroidism and alcohol dependence who collapsed at home with profound hypothermia, refractory hypoglycaemia, hypoxia and reduced consciousness. Initial findings were easily attributable to excess alcohol; however, clinical feature…

- Beyond TRISS: A Contemporary Expected Mortality Model for Trauma quality review-Trauma Quality Improvement Program, 2017-2024. [Journal Article]J Trauma Acute Care Surg. 2026 Oct 05. [Online ahead of print]JT
- CONCLUSIONS: CEM-Trauma improved risk ranking and average prediction error beyond both historical and coefficient-refit TRISS, whereas contemporary TRISS updating largely corrected overall calibration. These findings distinguish the benefit of recalibration from that of new predictors and model form. External validation is required before benchmarking adoption; the model is not intended for bedside decisions.

- Craniomaxillofacial trauma is a significant public health concern because of its association with severe injuries, long-term morbidity, and mortality. This study evaluated sex-based differences in trauma severity, length of hospital stay, and mortality among patients with craniomaxillofacial (CMF) trauma in Puerto Rico. This retrospective cohort study used electronic medical records from a trauma…

- Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has garnered increasing attention in recent years, not only as a hazardous environmental pollutant but also as the third endogenous gas signaling molecule, alongside nitric oxide and carbon monoxide. At elevated concentrations, it poses serious threats to human health by irritating the respiratory tract and nervous system, with high-level exposure potentially leading to com…
