  • ACCURACY OF HARD TISSUE PREDICTIONS IN MONO- AND BIMAXILLARY ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY USING 3D VIRTUAL SURGICAL PLANNING. [Journal Article]
J Stomatol Oral Maxillofac Surg. 2026 Oct 09; :103031. [Online ahead of print]Decho SA, Tolksdorf K, … Fischer MJS
  • CONCLUSIONS: Virtual surgery planning demonstrated clinically acceptable accuracy for maxillary positioning in midsagittal plane. However, mandibular vertical repositioning did not meet predefined equivalence criteria in the selected angular parameters. For unbiased postoperative evaluation of mandibular positioning, lateral cephalometric radiographs should be obtained after resolution of early confounding factors and represent a cost-effective, low-radiation alternative to three-dimensional imaging for sagittal and vertical assessment.
  • Characteristics of skeletal Class III subjects with and without obstructive sleep apnea. [Journal Article]
    J Stomatol Oral Maxillofac Surg. 2026 Oct 07; :103026. [Online ahead of print]Karusan J, Rochanavibhata S, … Kongsong WJS
  • CONCLUSIONS: Within skeletal Class III subjects, OSA was associated with male sex and shorter mandibular length, while differences in regional airway morphology were observed in the unadjusted analyses. Integrating clinical and imaging parameters may provide complementary information for identifying skeletal Class III patients at increased risk of OSA.
  • Correlation between maxillary movement and changes in nasolabial and nasofacial angles after Le Fort I osteotomy. [Journal Article]
Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]Koshinuma S, Asada Y, … Takaoka KIJ
  • Nasal aesthetic changes are a key concern in orthognathic surgery. This retrospective cohort study investigated whether the direction and magnitude of maxillary movement independently affect postoperative nasolabial angle (NLA) and nasofacial angle (NFA) following Le Fort I osteotomy in bimaxillary surgery. Forty-four patients (10 men, 34 women; median age 24 years) treated at a single institutio…
  • Association between Maternal Buprenorphine Use and Fetal Head Circumference. [Journal Article]
    South Med J. 2026 Oct 02; 119(10):614-619.Benton B, Snead T, … Olsen MSM
  • CONCLUSIONS: Previous studies have shown decreased head circumference in newborns in association with maternal MAT. This is the first study to provide ultrasound confirmation of decreased head circumference in fetuses exposed to buprenorphine. VLD buprenorphine may be associated with more favorable fetal growth measures compared with a TD. Interventions during pregnancy, including lowest effective dose treatment, may preserve fetal brain growth and improve long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes.
  • The Evolution and Impact of Artificial Intelligence in Orthognathic Surgery: A Bibliometric Analysis. [Review]
    Cureus. 2026 Aug; 18(8):e115442.Naija S, Chaouch AC
  • Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) are reshaping orthognathic surgery and maxillofacial traumatology by supporting diagnostic imaging and three-dimensional virtual surgical planning (VSP). This study provides a bibliometric mapping of the field in order to characterise its thematic structure, trace its temporal evolution, describe international collaborati…
  • Comparison of multivariate linear regression and random forest model in developing mandibular chin prediction reconstruction equation. [Journal Article]
Oral Maxillofac Surg. 2026 Sep 29; 30(1).Soh HY, Yu Y, … Zhang WBOM
  • CONCLUSIONS: Both models demonstrated comparable accuracy in predicting chin width; however, the multivariate regression model achieved lower prediction error compared with machine learning approaches using the same predictors. The interpretability and simplicity of multivariate linear regression may make it more clinically practical for reconstructing midline mandibular defects. A straightforward regression model can provide surgeons with a reliable, accessible tool for preoperative planning in complex mandibular reconstructions, especially where advanced computational resources are limited.
  • Accuracy of 3D radiological skull measurements: reoriented sections and geometric correction versus caliper reference. [Journal Article]
BMC Oral Health. 2026 Sep 25; 26(1).Nahir M, Sahin BBO
  • CONCLUSIONS: Reoriented sections findings and formula-based calculations offer accuracy comparable to caliper measurements, while standard sections results consistently underestimate the reference caliper values. These findings highlight the limitations of standard-section approaches and suggest that alternative methods may improve anatomical assessment in 3D imaging. These techniques may help reduce measurement-related discrepancies in settings requiring precise anatomical assessment. Such precision may be relevant in fields such as orthodontics, orthopedics, and implant planning, where accurate anatomical measurements are important.
