- A nested case-control study of air pollution and congenital heart defects via circulating proteins. [Journal Article]Nat Commun. 2026 Sep 09; 17(1).NC
- Prenatal air pollution exposure is linked to congenital heart defects (CHD), while the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here we showed that maternal exposure to PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 was significantly associated with increased CHD risk during the periconception period, with NO2 exhibiting the strongest effect. Moreover, a supervised sparse partial least square model identi…

- Spatio-temporal expression of E-cadherin mediates trophoblast lineage transitions during human placentation. [Review]Mol Biol Rep. 2026 Oct 08; 53(1).MB
- Human placentation relies on the precise differentiation of embryo-derived trophoblasts into specialized lineages, a process strictly regulated by the spatio-temporal expression of key genes. Herein, we report that the expression of the transmembrane glycoprotein, known as E-cadherin, fluctuates dynamically across distinct trophoblast subpopulations rather than acting as a static structural tethe…

- Chronic prenatal corticosterone exposure alters postpartum maternal behavior and shapes sex-specific offspring outcomes. [Journal Article]Res Sq. 2026 Aug 14.RS
- Stress during the prenatal period increases the risk in the next generation for negative health outcomes, including cardio-metabolic dysfunction and psychiatric diseases. To standardize prenatal exposure to stress hormone levels, we administered corticosterone (20 mg/kg s.c.) chronically (C-CORT) to pregnant mouse dams daily from gestational day 12-18. We monitored physiological, neural, and beha…

- Spondweni virus infection in pregnant rhesus macaques causes placental pathology without apparent fetal harm. [Journal Article]bioRxiv. 2026 Aug 10.B
- The 2015-2016 Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic revealed the potential of flaviviruses to emerge rapidly, cause severe disease, and affect pregnancy outcomes. In 2016, Spondweni virus (SPOV), the closest known relative of ZIKV, was detected in mosquitoes in Haiti, suggesting it may also have the potential to emerge in the Western Hemisphere. The risks that close relatives of ZIKV pose to pregnant indivi…

- Heterogeneity and ontogeny of mouse thymic macrophages reveal a requirement for Csf1r-expressing myeloid cells during early T cell development. [Journal Article]
- Thymic macrophages (TMs) maintain tissue homeostasis by clearing the large numbers of apoptotic cells generated during T cell development, but how TM heterogeneity relates to their developmental origin and role in thymocyte maturation remains incompletely understood. Using complementary flow-cytometric, single-cell transcriptomic, and genetic approaches, we resolved two major TM populations corre…

- Title: Maternal circulating cytokine and chemokine levels during pregnancy and risk of autism spectrum disorder in offspring: a systematic review and meta-analysis. [Review]Neurosci Biobehav Rev. 2026 Oct 06; :107019. [Online ahead of print]NB
- CONCLUSIONS: Maternal gestational immune profiles may differ in pregnancies later associated with autism, but current evidence does not support a single robust cytokine biomarker. Progress requires larger prospective cohorts with repeated sampling, harmonised assays, pathway-level analyses, and integrated placental-fetal neurodevelopmental phenotyping.

- Associations of Maternal Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome with Offspring Ovarian Activity in Minipuberty. [Journal Article]Fertil Steril. 2026 Oct 05. [Online ahead of print]FS
- CONCLUSIONS: Maternal PMOS was associated with larger ovarian volume and higher AMH levels in infant daughters, indicating that PMOS-related alterations in ovarian morphology and function may be evident already in early life.

- Multi-omic profiling defines subtype-specific extracellular vesicle signatures in early human pregnancy. [Journal Article]Biol Reprod. 2026 Oct 05. [Online ahead of print]BR
- Early human pregnancy (11-15 weeks) is a critical period when placental dysfunction begins but remains clinically undetectable, preventing early intervention for pregnancy complications. This highlights a pressing need for circulating biomarkers that can signal the onset of a complication. Circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) carry bioactive cargo that reflect originating cell activity in rea…

- Ptbp1 Condensates With Phase Separation-Like Features in Cardiomyocyte Nuclei Regulate Splicing of Proliferative Genes in Neonatal Cardiomyocytes. [Journal Article]
- Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide; however, effective clinical therapies that achieve myocardial regeneration are still lacking, underscoring the urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies. In this study, we identified an RNA-binding protein Ptbp1, a key component of RNA metabolism, as a critical regulator of cardiomyocyte proliferation via th…

- Sodium nitrite reduces circulating asymmetric dimethylarginine in a reduced uterine perfusion pressure rat model of preeclampsia. [Journal Article]
- Preeclampsia (PE) is characterized by hypertension, endothelial dysfunction, and reduced nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of endothelial NO synthase, is elevated in PE and contributes to vascular dysfunction. NO may regulate ADMA production. NO formation from nitrite occurs under hypoxic-ischemic conditions. Thus, this study investigat…

- Reappraising the topology of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal blood toward improved prenatal genetic diagnostics. [Review]
- Noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is a pregnancy screening test that analyses cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) in maternal plasma to detect fetal genetic abnormalities during pregnancy. Earlier and safer detection of fetal genetic abnormalities facilitated by NIPT has markedly transformed maternal-fetal medicine. However, NIPT is currently limited to be only a screening test due to fundamental biol…

- Functional analysis of adrenocorticotropic-hormone-producing pituitary cells derived from human pluripotent stem cells in murine and primate models of hypopituitarism. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, no previous study in primates has demonstrated efficacious pituitary cell transplantation, whether derived from fetal pituitary, xenogeneic pituitary, or PSCs. Future priorities include the acquisition of comprehensive non-clinical data to inform design of first-in-human clinical trials; optimisation of transplantation techniques; evaluation of immunosuppressive and adjunctive therapies; and assessment of safety and efficacy parameters. In parallel, the development of scalable manufacturing platforms utilising clinical-grade induced PSCs will be essential to establish the foundation for the eventual clinical application of pituitary cell transplantation therapy.

- Cyclooxygenase-2-driven oxylipin storm: A mechanistic link between prenatal DINP exposure and gestational chronic inflammation. [Journal Article]J Environ Sci (China). 2026 Nov; 169:471-483.JE
- Chronic inflammation during pregnancy is a persistent, often subclinical condition strongly associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Its etiology is multifactorial, with exposure to exogenous environmental stressors emerging as major contributors, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we report gestational chronic inflammation induced by exposure to realistic doses of ph…

- Evidence-based treatment strategies for hypoplastic left heart syndrome: The role of EFNA1/EphA. [Review]
- Cardiovascular health among the US general population remains largely suboptimal. Major contributing factors include diet, physical activity, and sleep, and these influences begin early in life, despite broad access to health information regarding healthy choices and access to medical care. Advances in perinatal care allow earlier detection of both maternal and congenital conditions, enabling int…

- Spatial Logic and Evolutionary Innovation in Human Placentation. [Journal Article]bioRxiv. 2026 Sep 09.B
- Human pregnancy unfolds in a unique mosaic tissue context. Embryonic/fetal placental and maternal uterine cells (decidua basalis) coalesce, forming the basal plate where immune tolerance is coordinated and the utero-placental circulation is initiated. The remaining approximately 70% of the maternal-fetal interface is comprised of the chorionic membranes, an epithelial-like layer of placental cell…
