- Type I IFN autoantibodies in three of seven Europeans with life-threatening Usutu virus infection. [Journal Article]J Hum Immun. 2027 Jan 04; 3(1).JH
- We previously reported that two of three patients with severe Usutu virus (USUV) disease carried circulating autoantibodies (auto-Abs) neutralizing type I IFNs (AAN-I-IFN). Here, we studied four additional patients, bringing the total number of European patients with life-threatening USUV infection to seven (Austria, n = 1; France, n = 1; Hungary, n = 4; Italy, n = 1). Three of these patients (al…

- Comparative microbiome analysis of parasitic and necrophagous subspecies of Lucilia cuprina. [Journal Article]
- Blowflies of the genus Lucilia (Insecta: Diptera: Calliphoridae) are important in forensic science, medical research, and agriculture, particularly due to their role as facultative ectoparasites of domesticated sheep. The Australian sheep blowfly, L. cuprina dorsalis, is a primary causative agent of cutaneous myiasis, leading to substantial economic losses to the wool industry. In contrast, the c…

- Global, regional, and national burden of unintentional poisoning, 1990-2023: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023. [Journal Article]Lancet Public Health. 2026 Oct 27. [Online ahead of print]LP
- CONCLUSIONS: Global reductions in GBD-defined unintentional poisoning by carbon monoxide and other means are consistent with decades of regulatory and environmental interventions. These include bans of highly toxic pesticides, improved heating and ventilation systems, emissions controls, and adoption of carbon monoxide alarms. Stark inequalities persist in some regions and in low-SDI settings. Compared with previous GBD publications, this study provides a detailed global assessment of unintentional poisoning by carbon monoxide and other means up to 2023, integrating incidence, DALYs, and comparative case fatality across regions.

- Contribution to the Knowledge of Flesh Flies (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) Attracted to Baits of Decomposing Animal Tissue in Athens, Greece: Ecological Patterns with Potential Forensic Entomology Applications. [Journal Article]
- The current study details the first species list of flesh flies (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), collected using carrion baited traps at three locations within Athens, Greece. The research aims to understand the local flesh fly fauna and discuss their potential use in forensic applications. Employing traps baited with beef liver, fish, and chicken stomach, the present study assessed the efficacy of thes…

- Development of Synthesiomyia nudiseta (Diptera: Muscidae) Under Constant and Fluctuating Temperatures: Implications for Minimum Postmortem Interval Estimation. [Journal Article]
- Synthesiomyia nudiseta (van der Wulp, 1883) is widely distributed across pantropical and subtropical biogeographic regions. Despite its recognized forensic importance, comprehensive developmental data for it remains scarce. This study observed the development of S. nudiseta from egg to adult at six constant temperatures in the range of 20-35 °C, and found that the times required were 732.7 ± 7, 5…

- Elevated Atmospheric CO2 Modifies Symbiont-Associated Dispersal Behavior Under a Standardized Assay in an Aphid Clone. [Journal Article]
- Rising atmospheric CO2 levels may alter behavioral dynamics that mediate species interactions, a largely overlooked dimension of ecosystem functioning. Aphids offer a tractable model for examining these modifications, as their primary protection from natural enemies relies on the alarm pheromone (E)-β-farnesene (Eβf). Facultative aphid endosymbionts like Candidatus Hamiltonella defensa complicate…

- Selection and evaluation of reference genes for RT-qPCR normalization across developmental stages and tissues in Dermestes maculatus (Coleoptera: Dermestidae). [Journal Article]
- Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is widely used for gene expression quantification, and stably expressed reference genes are essential for accurate data normalization. However, validated reference genes are not yet available for the hide beetle, Dermestes maculatus De Geer, 1774 (Coleoptera: Dermestidae), an economically important stored-product pest and a forensically r…

- Mitogenomic Insights Into the Ancient Split and Cryptic Diversity of the Poecilochirus carabi Complex (Acari: Mesostigmata). [Journal Article]
- Phoretic associations with insects are widespread in the Mesostigmata. These temporary symbiotic associations have been important in driving the evolutionary development of this taxon. The phoretic mite genus Poecilochirus, which is considered obligately associated with burying beetles, is of great value in forensic entomology. However, due to the morphological conservatism and the difficulty of …

- Combining ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and DEGs with machine learning for necrophagous insect diapause duration estimation. [Journal Article]Spectrochim Acta A Mol Biomol Spectrosc. 2027 Feb 05; 366:128877.SA
- Forensic entomology plays an important role in estimating the postmortem interval (PMI). However, during cold seasons, necrophagous insects may enter diapause, resulting in developmental arrest. Currently, effective methods for estimating diapause duration are limited, which may compromise the accuracy of PMI estimation based on insect evidence. Here we show that multi-dimensional data fusion of …

- Infrared spectroscopy combined with interpretable machine learning for forensic identification and weathering time estimation of empty blow fly puparia. [Journal Article]Forensic Sci Int. 2026 Sep 29; 390:113149. [Online ahead of print]FS
- In this work, spectral data was used to identify the species and weathering time of blow fly puparia, which helps with the estimation of the minimum post-mortem interval (PMImin) in forensic science. After a preliminary model selection stage, the two best-performing modeling approaches were compared: a classical Logistic Regression (LR) model and a more complex Convolutional Neural Network (CNN).…

- The analysis of post-mortem fluorescent signatures in discarded cell lysate from DNA extractions: a comparative study between pig and human remains. [Journal Article]Analyst. 2026 Oct 27; 151(21):6416-6431.A
- Post-mortem interval (PMI) estimation remains a complex yet crucial task in medico-legal death investigations, as accurate and reliable estimates could establish timelines and contextualize physical evidence. Taphonomic studies often use pig carcasses as human analogues, and while they perform well in some entomology experiments, comparative studies have shown interspecies differences in biomolec…

- CONCLUSIONS: Heart failure is a significant global public health burden, and the impact is likely to increase as populations age. However, most HF etiologies can be prevented by interventions that reduce exposure to modifiable risk factors, such as elevated blood pressure, excessive alcohol consumption, and tobacco use. Etiology- and location-specific estimates can provide necessary information for public health officials to determine how best to prioritize interventions to reduce HF disease burden.

- Unscented and scented LDPE trash bags do not alter blow fly attraction to vertebrate remains. [Journal Article]Forensic Sci Med Pathol. 2026 Sep 30. [Online ahead of print]FS
- Medicolegal forensic entomology allows investigators to estimate the minimum postmortem interval (mPMI) through the predictable attraction of blow flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) to decomposing remains. Because homicide victims are frequently concealed within plastic bags, the behavioral responses of flies to these physical barriers requires formal investigation. Furthermore, the rising prevalence…
