- A Case of Hemorrhagic Cavernoma of the Lumbar Nerve Root. [Case Reports]NMC Case Rep J. 2026; 13:553-557.NC
- There have been 26 cases of surgically resected intradural extramedullary cavernomas in the lumbar nerve root. Only 4 cases were accompanied by intratumoral hemorrhage. A 63-year-old woman presented with right lower limb paresthesia that had begun 14 and 6 months ago, followed by gradually worsening motor paralysis over the last 2 months. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a homogeneous intradur…

- Ischemic Stroke as the Initial Presentation of an Underlying Neuroinfectious Disease. [Case Reports]Cureus. 2026 Nov; 18(11):e118974.C
- Neuroinfectious cerebral vasculitis is a rare but potentially underrecognized cause of ischemic stroke. Its clinical and neuroimaging features may closely mimic those of common cerebrovascular disorders, posing a diagnostic challenge. We describe two patients who presented with ischemic stroke, one with an atypical presentation and the other with recurrent episodes, in whom advanced neuroimaging …

- Recurrent ocular syphilis in a patient living with HIV: A case report. [Case Reports]J Natl Med Assoc. 2026 Oct 19; 119(1):101133. [Online ahead of print]JN
- A 35-year-old man presented with bilateral visual disturbance and was newly diagnosed with HIV infection. Initial evaluation revealed positive syphilis serology with a VDRL titer of 1:4, and ophthalmologic examination demonstrated bilateral optic disc swelling. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed no definitive evidence of neurosyphilis. The patient was treated with intravenous ceftriaxone, achiev…

- Lower nutrient adequacy despite comparable nutrient density and diet quality in adults with chronic spinal cord injury. [Journal Article]J Spinal Cord Med. 2026 Nov 03; :1-14. [Online ahead of print]JS
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that nutritional vulnerability after SCI may reflect lower reported energy intake more than poorer diet quality. Meeting general-population nutrient targets within a smaller "energy budget" requires a more nutrient-dense diet, even when diet-quality scores appear similar.

- Risk of depression in individuals with syphilis: a population-based, nationwide matched cohort study in Denmark. [Journal Article]Clin Microbiol Infect. 2026 Nov 02. [Online ahead of print]CM
- CONCLUSIONS: Individuals undergoing syphilis testing had an increased risk of depression irrespective of test result, suggesting that the association reflects characteristics of the tested population rather than the syphilis infection itself.

- Norms for a German version of the Phenomenological Control Scale: measuring the capacity for creating and controlling experience. [Journal Article]
- The ability to create experiences which misrepresent reality and thereby meet strategic goals is a stable trait that varies substantially in the general population. The capacity for such phenomenological control can be measured by response to imaginative suggestions for a variety of experiences, e.g. hallucination in various modalities, amnesia, paralysis, or motor actions, which are experienced …

- Recipient Vessel Utilization in Gracilis Free Functional Muscle Transfer for Facial Reanimation: A 12-Year Single-Center Experience. [Journal Article]Microsurgery. 2026 Dec; 46(8).M
- CONCLUSIONS: Facial vessels remain the preferred recipients for gracilis FFMT, with the superficial temporal system providing a suitable alternative. Recipient vessel selection was not associated with significant differences in overall complications, flap survival, or muscle activation. A flexible, anatomy-guided algorithm may facilitate surgical planning when facial vessels are absent or unsuitable.

- Patient-Reported Concerns and Factors Associated With Anesthetic Preference: A Cross-Sectional Study on Why Patients Choose General Over Regional Anesthesia. [Journal Article]
- Background Regional anesthesia (RA) offers established perioperative benefits, yet many patients choose general anesthesia (GA) even when RA is a clinically appropriate option. Understanding patients' specific concerns and other factors associated with anesthetic preference may help improve patient-centered preoperative communication and shared decision-making. Methods This cross-sectional, quest…

- Transient gait instability during the initial phase of the 6-minute walk test in people with stroke: A nonlinear analysis using inertial measurement units. [Journal Article]Gait Posture. 2026 Oct 28; 132:110673. [Online ahead of print]GP
- CONCLUSIONS: PwS showed fatigue-related gait changes during the 6MWT, while mediolateral local dynamic stability transiently declined during the first 60 s before stabilizing. This instability was associated with motor paralysis, suggesting trunk IMU-based sLE-ML may reveal motor control deficits not captured by walking distance or speed.

- One-year quality of life and functional outcomes after robotic diaphragm plication for unilateral paralysis: A retrospective cohort analysis. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: This retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected cohort suggests that robotic-assisted thoracoscopic diaphragm plication is associated with improved long-term quality of life and pulmonary function in patients with symptomatic unilateral diaphragm paralysis.

- Syphilis: clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic update. [Review]Med Clin (Barc). 2026 Oct 27; :107623. [Online ahead of print]MC
- Syphilis remains a major global public health concern due to the sustained increase in incidence observed over recent decades, particularly among high-risk populations. Its broad clinical spectrum and ability to mimic numerous dermatological and systemic diseases continue to make it a relevant diagnostic challenge in dermatological practice. This review summarizes the main epidemiological, microb…

- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in a Patient Treated for Neurosyphilis: A Case Report. [Case Reports]
- CONCLUSIONS: Identifying a treatable mimic does not close the diagnostic process. Combined upper and lower motor neuron signs that continue to progress despite adequate treatment of neurosyphilis should prompt early electrodiagnostic evaluation for ALS, even though the relative contribution of each condition may remain uncertain.

- Eponymous Pupillary and Ocular Sensory Signs of Neurosyphilis: A Historical Review. [Historical Article]
- The objective of this study was to review pupillary and ocular sensory signs historically associated with neurosyphilis, focusing on eponymous findings because they are the most traceable and consistently cited descriptors in the historical neuro-ophthalmic literature. These signs were originally described between 1850 and 1910 by five clinicians whose observations later received eponymous recogn…

- Progressive Bilateral Weakness Followed by Unilateral Facial Palsy in Guillain-Barré Syndrome Temporally Associated With Multiple Vaccinations. [Case Reports]
- Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy in which facial weakness may occur as a cranial neuropathy. Unilateral facial palsy may also prompt a diagnosis of idiopathic Bell's palsy, creating a risk of diagnostic anchoring when broader neurologic symptoms are already present. We report a 32-year-old man with childhood epilepsy who described progressive bilate…
