- Varicella zoster vasculopathy presenting as bilateral subdural haematoma in an infant: case report of a rare case and literature review. [Case Reports]Childs Nerv Syst. 2026 Oct 24; 42(1).CN
- CONCLUSIONS: Bilateral subdural haematoma following VZV infection in infancy is a rare and delayed but life-threatening complication which requires prompt recognition and intervention. It can mimic findings seen following non-accidental injury. Prolonged neurological symptoms following VZV infection should raise the possibility of intracranial complications and needs prompt investigation and management.

- In-Hospital Outcomes of Acyclovir With or Without Corticosteroid for Herpes Simplex Encephalitis: A Nationwide Retrospective Cohort Study. [Journal Article]Neurol Clin Pract. 2026 Dec; 16(6):e200675.NC
- CONCLUSIONS: Early adjunctive corticosteroid therapy was not associated with lower in-hospital mortality or better functional outcomes in patients with HSV encephalitis. Although our findings do not support the routine use of early adjunctive corticosteroids, further studies evaluating the optimal indications, timing, and duration of corticosteroid administration are needed to clarify its potential role in the management of HSV encephalitis.

- The hidden burden of viral meningitis in ethiopia: Etiology and clinical outcomes. [Multicenter Study]PLoS One. 2026; 21(10):e0361291.Plos
- CONCLUSIONS: In this predominantly pediatric study, enteroviruses are the leading cause of viral meningitis in Ethiopia. Most study participants experienced favorable outcomes. Unfavorable outcomes were independently associated with sex, duration from disease onset to hospital visit, and history of antibiotic use before hospital visit. Further identification and characterization of Enteroviruses are warranted.

- FDG Uptake Extending From the Dorsal Root Ganglion to the Sciatic Nerve After Herpes Zoster. [Journal Article]Clin Nucl Med. 2026 Oct 20. [Online ahead of print]CN
- A woman in her 50s receiving paclitaxel, carboplatin, and pembrolizumab for recurrent cervical cancer developed herpes zoster and received antiviral therapy. 18F-FDG PET/CT performed 22 days after zoster onset, when the skin lesions had crusted, demonstrated continuous uptake extending from the left L5 dorsal root ganglion to the sciatic nerve. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of…

- c-FLIP loss links arrest of gene expression to TNFα-dependent antiviral guard immunity. [Journal Article]Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2026 Oct 27; 123(43):e2600336123.PN
- Cells sense infection through dedicated receptors, yet these surveillance pathways are often subverted by pathogen-encoded virulence factors. Guard immunity provides complementary defense by rapidly killing infected cells in response to infection induced stress. However, the symptoms of infection frequently resemble noninfectious stress, raising the question of how they are distinguished. Using q…

- Development of a risk score to predict encephalitis by Herpes Simplex Virus and Varicella Zoster Virus. [Journal Article]
- Encephalitis guidelines recommend repeating a lumbar puncture (LP) 3-7 days after an initial negative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) herpes simplex virus (HSV) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test in patients with high suspicion for HSV or varicella zoster virus (VZV), but this subgroup has not been specified. Retrospective observational study of 602 adults with encephalitis from 2002 to 2023 from two…

- Supervised Reduction Protocol for Management of Herpetic Stromal Keratitis. [Journal Article]Cornea. 2026 Oct 22. [Online ahead of print]C
- CONCLUSIONS: Close follow-up under the SRP allows for detection and treatment of early, often asymptomatic recurrences before they progress to symptomatic or vision-threatening disease. This was a single-site retrospective study of one physician's outcomes; thus, these findings do not establish that SRP is superior to others management approaches. Prospective, multisite comparative effectiveness studies are needed to validate the role of SRP for herpetic SK.

- Herpes Simplex Esophagitis Superimposed on Eosinophilic Esophagitis in an Immunocompetent Patient. [Case Reports]
- Herpes simplex esophagitis (HSE) rarely occurs in immunocompetent patients. Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) may predispose to herpes simplex virus superinfection through epithelial barrier disruption. We present an immunocompetent woman with previous EoE managed with dietary modifications without pharmacologic therapy who developed severe odynophagia. Endoscopy showed erosive esophagitis mimicking…

- Cellular senescence in multiple sclerosis: hallmarks, immunosenescence, and therapeutic implications. [Review]
- Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated neurodegenerative disease where chronological aging predicts the conversion to progressive MS (PMS), a phase defined by compartmentalized inflammation and accelerated neurodegeneration. While current disease modifying therapies (DMTs) are effective for managing the inflammatory aspect of MS, treatments remain inadequate. It is imperative to understand…

- Altered Regional Spontaneous Brain Activity and Default Mode Network Functional Connectivity in Herpes Zoster-Related Pain Patients with High Anxiety. [Journal Article]Brain Topogr. 2026 Oct 23; 39(6).BT
- Pain and psychological disorders are two common symptom clusters in patients with herpes zoster-related pain (HZ-RP). We utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate functional characteristics of the brain in HZ-RP patients with different levels of anxiety. Twenty-five HZ-RP patients with high anxiety (HZ-RP with HA) and 26 HZ-RP patients with low anxiety (HZ-RP with LA) w…

- Exploring spillovers of vaccines: A practical application of the Expanded Impact Inventory. [Journal Article]Eur J Health Econ. 2026 Oct 23. [Online ahead of print]EJ
- Including all relevant costs and effects in economic evaluations can be challenging, especially when spillovers in other individuals or sectors are likely. Previous literature has highlighted that the combination of relevant spillovers is evaluation and context specific. This emphasises the importance of identifying (the evidence on) relevant spillovers systematically. Spillovers are defined here…

- Liver-resident cellular determinants of oncolytic virotherapy in hepatocellular carcinoma: viral susceptibility and spatial immune remodeling. [Review]Front Cell Dev Biol. 2026; 14:1959317.FC
- Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) develops in a chronically injured and immunologically specialized organ that is both the treatment target and a major determinant of viral clearance and toxicity. Oncolytic viruses (OVs) can couple tumor-selective infection with immunogenic lysis, innate sensing, antigen presentation, and adaptive immune recruitment, but the clinical consequences of these processes …

- Case Report: Fatal varicella-zoster virus meningoencephalitis with Froin-like cerebrospinal fluid and hydrocephalus following pembrolizumab-containing chemoimmunotherapy. [Case Reports]Front Pharmacol. 2026; 17:1937378.FP
- CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights VZV CNS infection as an important diagnostic consideration in ICI-treated patients who develop herpes zoster and neurological symptoms, because infection may mimic or coexist with a neurological irAE. The temporal relationship with pembrolizumab raises, but does not establish, the possibility that PD-1 blockade modified the inflammatory response. Prompt virological testing and adequately dosed antiviral therapy are central to management; the role of adjunctive immunomodulation remains uncertain and should be individualized.

- Oncolytic Virus-Engineered Extracellular Vesicles Rewire Glioblastoma Immunity. [Journal Article]J Extracell Vesicles. 2026 Oct; 15(10).JE
- Immunotherapy with oncolytic Herpes simplex virus type 1 (oHSV-1) shows promise for glioblastoma; however, clinical benefit remains uncommon due to tumour- and host-mediated immunosuppression, which limits immune targeting of residual glioblastoma stem-like cells (GSCs). To address this barrier, extracellular vesicles (EVs) harvested from oHSV-1-infected GSCs (EVOV) were evaluated for their immun…
