- Upadacitinib and upadacitinib-vedolizumab combination therapy for refractory pediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease. [Journal Article]Intest Res. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]IR
- CONCLUSIONS: Upadacitinib demonstrated acceptable efficacy and safety in patients with highly refractory pediatric-onset IBD. In this small subgroup, UVCT was associated with clinical remission in most patients (4/5), suggesting that it may warrant further investigation as a salvage strategy to avert surgery. Prospective, multicenter studies are needed to define the optimal positioning within pediatric-onset IBD treatment algorithms.

- Global burden of varicella and herpes zoster in women of childbearing age: insights from the global burden of disease study 1990-2021. [Journal Article]Eur J Clin Microbiol Infect Dis. 2026 Oct 06. [Online ahead of print]EJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Overall, from 1990 to 2021, the global burden of varicella and herpes zoster among WCBA increased, with increases in prevalent and incident cases as well as prevalence and incidence worldwide. Although the DALY rate declined in most SDI regions, it generally trended upward in the high-SDI region.

- Adult vaccination in people living with HIV attending a tertiary centre infectious diseases clinic. [Journal Article]South Afr J HIV Med. 2026; 27(1):1819.SA
- CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed low vaccination rates amongst PLWH in Johannesburg, South Africa, specifically regarding guidelines from the South African HIV Clinicians Society. Increased awareness of the influenza vaccine and direct recommendations from healthcare providers were key factors linked to vaccine uptake.

- Exploring the role of infectious pathogens in Alzheimer's disease neuroinflammation. [Review]Front Cell Infect Microbiol. 2026; 16:1919289.FC
- Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder in older adults, characterized by progressive cognitive decline that ultimately leads to severe dementia. The primary pathophysiological hallmarks of AD include the accumulation of amyloid-β plaques, neurofibrillary tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau protein, synaptic dysfunction, and pronounced neuroinflammation. - Occurrence of Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Viral Meningitis and Encephalitis. [Journal Article]J Med Virol. 2026 Oct; 98(10):e71171.JM
- Hearing loss in viral neuroinfections is poorly investigated. The present study aimed to clarify if hearing loss can develop in viral meningitis and encephalitis. An OAE (oto-acoustic emission) was measured in adult patients with viral meningitis and encephalitis on the day of admission and 30-60 days after discharge. Frequencies were categorized as Low (1, 1.5, 2 kHz), Mid (3, 4, 5 kHz), Mid-hig…

- Ruptured intracranial dermoid cyst as an incidental finding: Case report. [Case Reports]Radiol Case Rep. 2026 Dec; 21(12):6271-6276.RC
- Intracranial dermoid cysts are rare, benign congenital lesions originating from ectodermal remnants. Though typically asymptomatic, their rupture, although infrequent, can lead to significant neurological complications, such as chemical meningitis, vasospasm, and hydrocephalus. Imaging with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a crucial role in diagnosis, providing …

- Two Versus One COVID-19 Vaccine Dose After Prior SARS-CoV-2 Infection: A Nationwide Retrospective Cohort Study. [Journal Article]Open Forum Infect Dis. 2026 Oct; 13(10):ofag602.OF
- CONCLUSIONS: Among individuals with prior infection, completion of primary-series vaccination provided modest additional protection against reinfection compared with a single dose. These findings support risk-based dose-optimization strategies in settings with constrained vaccine supply.

- Multiple Sclerosis and Viruses: « Liaisons Dangereuses ». [Review]Rev Med Virol. 2026 Nov; 36(6):e70212.RM
- Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex, multifactorial neurodegenerative disease with an aetiology that is still partially elusive. Several risk factors are associated with MS development including genetic predisposition and various environmental stressors; however, recently, viral infections have gained significant attention as a crucial environmental trigger. Despite the well-established link bet…

- Herpes Zoster as a Trigger of Cardiovascular Events: A Systematic Review of Epidemiological Evidence and Pathophysiological Mechanisms. [Journal Article]Am J Med. 2026 Oct 04. [Online ahead of print]AJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Clinically manifest HZ is associated with a transient increase in vascular risk, most consistently for stroke. The temporal pattern and stronger association after HZO support HZ as a potential acute vascular trigger, while evidence for myocardial infarction and other vascular outcomes remains less robust.

- CDC AIDS Project 72: The Prostitute Study. [Journal Article]
- In the early years of the AIDS epidemic, the occurrence and potential for heterosexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV 1) in the United States were uncertain. To better understand infection among women and the possible role of prostitution in the emerging epidemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention established CDC AIDS Project 72, a multisite study of 1 410 w…

- Deep Herpes in an Adolescent With Severe Atopic Dermatitis and Concurrent Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Bacteremia. [Case Reports]
- Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is a well-recognized complication of atopic dermatitis, most commonly presenting as eczema herpeticum. Deep herpes is a recently described clinicopathologic manifestation of HSV infection, characterized by viral involvement of cutaneous stromal cells with limited or absent epidermal infection, which can make diagnosis challenging when classic histopathologic f…

- Painless Thoracic Herpes Zoster Eruption in an 88-Year-Old Woman With Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease: A Case Report. [Case Reports]
- Herpes zoster (HZ) typically presents with a unilateral vesicular eruption accompanied by neuropathic pain. Although pain is a characteristic feature, painless presentations may occur and can create a diagnostic challenge. We report the case of an 88-year-old woman with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) who developed a unilateral vesicular eruption involving the right thoracic dermatome witho…

- Viral triggers of Guillain-Barré syndrome: implications for laboratory diagnostics. [Review]Biochem Med (Zagreb). 2026 Oct 15; 36(3):030502.BM
- Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a leading cause of acquired acute neuromuscular paralysis and is an immune-mediated disorder of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Accumulating evidence indi-cates that GBS is often preceded by infectious events that trigger autoimmune responses through mechanisms such as molecular mimicry and autoantibody production. Campylobacter jejuni remains the most common…

- The epidemiological impact and effectiveness of herpes zoster vaccination among older and pharmacologically immunocompromised adults: a population-based observational study. [Journal Article]
- Australia used the live attenuated herpes zoster vaccine (ZVL, Zostavax®) for 70-79 year-old adults in its National Immunisation Program from 2016. In November 2023 this was replaced with the recombinant adjuvanted herpes zoster vaccine (RZV, Shingrix) and eligibility expanded to include adults ≥65 years old and immunocompromised adults ≥18 years. We aimed to assess the vaccine program impact and…
