- Assessment of the DNA lesion specificity of the comet assay in combination with DNA repair inhibitors (Aphidicolin and Hydroxyurea/Cytosine Arabinoside). [Journal Article]Mutagenesis. 2026 Oct 03. [Online ahead of print]M
- The standard alkaline comet assay is a straightforward and cost-effective genotoxicity test commonly used in genetic toxicology to detect strand breaks and alkali-labile sites in DNA. Furthermore, with certain modifications, other altered bases such as oxidised and alkylated bases and cross-links can also be detected. However, it cannot detect bulky DNA adducts, which are a significant DNA lesion…

- Ovarian Reserve in Women of Reproductive Age With Sickle Cell Anaemia: A Scoping Review. [Review]EJHaem. 2026 Oct; 7(5):e70410.E
- CONCLUSIONS: The available evidence indicates that women of reproductive age with SCA, particularly those with HbSS genotype, may demonstrate lower ovarian reserve indices compared to age-matched HbAA controls, though the cross-sectional nature of most studies limits causal inference. These findings highlight the need for early reproductive counselling and further longitudinal research.

- FPN1-8C>G Polymorphism as a potential genetic modifier of iron overload in transfusion-dependent β-Thalassemia major patients receiving HbF augmentation therapy. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: FPN1-8C>G was significantly associated with greater iron burden and altered iron-regulatory biomarkers. It may represent a potential genetic marker of susceptibility to iron overload in transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia major; however, prospective validation is required.

- Masked polycythaemia vera presenting with extensive splanchnic venous thrombosis and mesenteric ischaemia. [Case Reports]BMJ Case Rep. 2026 Sep 30; 19(9).BC
- Splanchnic venous thrombosis (SVT) is a potentially catastrophic manifestation of polycythaemia vera (PV). We report a woman in her 60s with masked PV who had been managed for 5 years with intermittent phlebotomy and aspirin without haematology referral, molecular testing or cytoreductive therapy. Chronic iron deficiency masked erythrocytosis, delaying diagnosis. She presented with extensive thro…

- Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Venous Catheter for Automated Erythrocytapheresis in a Paediatric Population Affected by Sickle Cell Disease. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that aEEX under light sedation with US-guided PVC placement is a safe, well-tolerated and effective alternative to CVC in selected paediatric patients with SCD. This approach may expand access to aEEX reducing reliance on CVC and manual exchange procedures.

- Nuclear proteome analysis suggests spatial and temporal compartmentalization of metabolic enzymes during Trypanosoma cruzi cell cycle. [Journal Article]PLoS Negl Trop Dis. 2026 Sep 28; 20(9):e0013299. [Online ahead of print]PN
- Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas Disease (CD), represents a significant public health concern and serves as a valuable model for investigating the cell cycle in early-diverging eukaryotes. Its unique cellular features, including the absence of chromosome condensation and the coordination of nuclear division with specialized organelles, provide insights into non-canonical regulato…

- Synergistic Effect of Newcastle Disease Virus and Hydroxyurea in Apoptosis of Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells (HepG2). [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: The combination of the common chemotherapeutic agent HU with the nonpathogenic LaSota strain of NDV as virotherapy showed a synergistic effect on HepG2 cells in vitro. The results suggest a possible therapeutic benefit by suppressing cancer cell proliferation, inhibiting growth, and inducing cell death. However, these results are restricted to in vitro tests and may not fully represent the complexity of liver cancer in humans; additional in vivo research is required to assess the approach's safety and clinical applicability. Additionally, this combination might serve as a foundation for further research on multidrug resistance.

- The Unfinished Story of Sickle Cell Nephropathy: A Narrative Review of Knowledge Gaps and Research Imperatives. [Review]
- Sickle cell nephropathy (SCN) is one of the most consequential yet under-recognized complications of sickle cell disease (SCD), contributing significantly to long-term morbidity and premature mortality. Despite its clinical importance, SCN often escapes early detection, in part because standard measures of kidney function can mask disease that is already well established. This narrative review sy…

- Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Special Statement: Checklists for persons with sickle cell disease in pregnancy. [Journal Article]
- This article presents checklists designed to guide clinicians in the comprehensive management of pregnant individuals with sickle cell disease, including prepregnancy, antepartum, delivery, and postpartum care, as well as the specific management of vaso-occlusive crises. The checklists aim to standardize care, enhance documentation and communication, and improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. Im…

- Red blood cell transfusion to treat or prevent complications in sickle cell disease: an overview of Cochrane reviews. [Systematic Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: This overview provides support from two high-quality Cochrane reviews for the use of RBC transfusions in preventing stroke in children and adolescents at high risk of stroke (abnormal TCDs or SCI) and evidence that it may decrease the risk of SCI in children with abnormal TCD velocities. In addition, RBC transfusions may reduce the risk of ACS and painful crisis in this population. This overview highlights the lack of high-quality evidence in adults with SCD and the number of reviews that have no evidence for the use of RBC transfusions across a spectrum of SCD complications. The variable and often incomplete reporting of patient-relevant outcomes in the included trials, such as SCD-related serious adverse events and quality of life, is also concerning.

- Hydroxyurea-Loaded Nanostructured Lipid Carriers for Enhanced In Vitro Cytotoxicity and Drug Delivery. [Journal Article]J Vis Exp. 2026 Sep 22; (235).JV
- Hydroxyurea (HU) is an established anticancer drug used to treat chronic myelogenous leukemia, but its therapeutic efficacy is limited by rapid clearance, variable bioavailability, and dose-related toxicity. This study aimed to improve HU delivery by developing hydroxyurea-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) using different surfactant combinations. Three formulations, including NX-ST (Twe…

- Nitric oxide (NO)-based therapy represents a promising strategy against multidrug-resistant infections owing to its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and minimal propensity to induce resistance. Hydroxyurea (HyU), a clinically approved drug for sickle cell disease, has recently emerged as a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-responsive NO precursor. However, the hydroxamic acid moiety responsible for N…
