  • Estimation of the global burden of tungiasis in endemic countries using a disability adjusted life-years modelling approach. [Journal Article]
    BMC Glob Public Health. 2026 Aug 31; 4(1).Antonopoulos A, Elson L, … von Samson-Himmelstjerna GBG
  • CONCLUSIONS: Our estimates suggest tungiasis exerts a substantial burden of disease in endemic countries, comparable in absolute terms to that of soil-transmitted helminths and echinococcosis, and greater than that of toxocariasis, fascioliasis. Furthermore, we observe marked regional concentration of disease burden within Sub-Saharan Africa, with the disease burden in this region driven by large at-risk rural, and urban slum-dwelling, populations living within the ecological zone of transmission.
  • Visual cues attract adult Tunga penetrans (Siphonaptera: Tungidae). [Journal Article]
    J Med Entomol. 2026 Jul 01; 63(4).Hyuga A, Ouma P, … Fillinger UJM
  • Tunga penetrans (Linnaeus, 1758) (Siphonaptera: Tungidae) is an ectoparasitic flea whose adult females cause tungiasis by embedding into the host's skin. Environmental, social and financial challenges in tungiasis endemic areas have left this disease neglected and lacking locally available control measures. One possible approach for controlling T. penetrans targets its off-host stages; however, s…
  • Enabling data-driven decision-making for innovative health care and delivery in Africa. [Review]
Npj Health Syst. 2025 Dec 16; 2(1).Agamah FE, Anyanful A, … Thomford NENH
  • The information age, fueled by globalization and technological advancements, has transformed the data landscape, impacting decision-making, management, governance, and policy intervention across various sectors. The health sectors are no exception, experiencing a data explosion driven by ongoing research initiatives and advancements. This transformation necessitates a shift towards evidence-based…
  • Imported Tungiasis in Greece: Secondary Household Transmission and Transient Mixed Liver Enzyme Elevation. [Journal Article]
Trop Med Infect Dis. 2026 Jun 21; 11(6).Fotas T, Giantsis IA, … Christodoulopoulos GTM
  • Tungiasis is a cutaneous ectoparasitosis caused by the penetration of gravid female Tunga penetrans fleas into the epidermis. Although endemic in tropical and subtropical regions, it remains rare in Europe, where most cases are travel-associated and secondary household transmission is seldom documented. This study describes imported tungiasis in Greece and investigates possible secondary househol…
  • Nonvolatile Sequential Logic Enabled by CuInP2S6 van der Waals Ferroelectric Field-Effect Transistors. [Journal Article]
    ACS Nano. 2026 Jun 09; 20(22):16203-16215.Lee H, Kang J, … Zhu WAN
  • Nonvolatile flip-flops and latches have been proposed as key building blocks for improving the reliability and energy efficiency of computing systems operating under aggressive power gating and intermittent power availability. Ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FeFETs) based on van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide a promising approach for nonvolatile sequential logic by enabling dire…
  • Retinal Ganglion Cell Degeneration in Glaucoma: Systematic Review. [Review]
    Bioengineering (Basel). 2026 Apr 28; 13(5).Firoz M, Shome N, … Kooner KSB
  • Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) degeneration underlies glaucomatous optic neuropathy and remains a leading cause of irreversible vision loss worldwide. Although elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the primary modifiable risk factor, RGC death reflects converging mechanisms including mechanical stress, vascular insufficiency, metabolic dysfunction, and neuroinflammation. We conducted a PRISMA-guide…
  • Unleashing potential: assessing Africa's readiness for the data science revolution to impact health. [Review]
    Nat Commun. 2026 Apr 13; 17(1).Panji S, Ras V, … Mulder NNC
  • Data Science can revolutionize biomedical sciences, and ultimately, health. However, this relies on core elements, including computing infrastructure, data science skills, and well-curated contextually relevant data, which are limited in low- and middle-income countries. Many big data biomedical projects that have emerged over the last decade have been instrumental in development of datasets, com…
