- Linking Osmotic Laxative Exposure to Effective Gut Microbial Dynamics: A Treatment-Dependent Lotka-Volterra Analysis. [Journal Article]Math Biosci. 2026 Oct 10; :109821. [Online ahead of print]MB
- Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is an osmotic laxative that induces concentration-dependent shifts in gut microbial composition. In mouse PEG-challenge experiments, Muribaculaceae decline during exposure, whereas Bacteroidaceae remain stable or increase in relative representation. We analyzed these family-level trajectories using an effective two-family competition-immigration model on the sequencing-d…

- Heat-inactivated probiotic-fermented tamarind pulp alleviates constipation by modulating gut tryptophan catabolism and the AhR NLRP3 axis. [Journal Article]J Adv Res. 2026 Oct 09. [Online ahead of print]JA
- CONCLUSIONS: FTP effectively alleviated constipation by improving intestinal function, reducing inflammation, and remodeling the gut microbiota-metabolite axis. Mechanistically, fermentation-driven tryptophan catabolism and quercetin biotransformation converge on the AhR-NLRP3 axis. These findings highlight FTP as a superior nutritional strategy over UFTP.

- Daily consumption of sulfate- and magnesium-rich mineral water enhances bowel function in adults with chronic constipation: a randomized double-blind real-world trial. [Clinical Trial]
- Functional constipation is one of the most common disorders of gut-brain interaction. Adequate hydration is recommended as first-line therapy, yet evidence regarding the efficacy of sulfate- and magnesium-rich mineral water remains limited. Therefore, this study investigated its efficacy and safety in a nationwide decentralized randomized controlled trial.

- One-year outcomes for patients undergoing antegrade continence enema procedures without prior rectal enema therapy: a Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Learning Consortium study. [Journal Article]J Pediatr Surg. 2026 Oct 08; :163528. [Online ahead of print]JP
- CONCLUSIONS: Upfront ACE was associated with low complication rates and successful bowel management at one year, with 90.0% continuing ACE flushes and no discontinuations attributable to failure of bowel management. These outcomes were achieved within established multidisciplinary colorectal programs and may not be reproducible in settings without comparable longitudinal support. Further investigation is needed to assess long-term success and compliance and to identify populations who would benefit most from this approach.

- Biotransformation and metabolite formation of lavender (Lavandula officinalis) flower infusion by human gut microbiota. [Journal Article]J Ethnopharmacol. 2026 Oct 07; 374(Pt 2):122457. [Online ahead of print]JE
- CONCLUSIONS: Lavender flower infusion is extensively transformed by the human gut microbiota, forming metabolites with potential biological relevance. Assuming complete conversion, the estimated coumarin exposure from a 250 mL serving of the infusion would be approximately 1.9-fold higher than the tolerable daily intake for a 60 kg adult. For herniarin, no tolerable daily intake has been established, highlighting the need for further studies on its safety.

- Mapping the genetic landscape of the age at onset and severity of eating disorder symptoms. [Journal Article]Br J Psychiatry. 2026 Oct 07; :1-10. [Online ahead of print]BJ
- CONCLUSIONS: Eating disorder symptoms begin in adulthood as frequently as adolescence, challenging stereotypes and underscoring investment needed in adult services, particularly for males. Although behavioural symptoms and low weight were strongly heritable, age at onset and cognitive symptoms showed limited genetic contribution. Symptom-level PGS analyses highlight distinct biological and developmental pathways. Larger sample sizes and more accurate phenotyping are needed.

- Gut-Brain Axis in Comorbid Constipation and Mood Disorders: Navigating the Efficacy-Tolerability Dilemma Through Emerging Evidence and Future Directions. [Review]
- CONCLUSIONS: Overcoming the dilemma requires mechanism-oriented drug selection, optimized combination regimens, and individualized management. Future efforts should accelerate multi-target drug trials, multi-omics-based precision models, and multidisciplinary team implementation. The evidence base remains limited, with few large randomized controlled trials specifically targeting the comorbid population. Readers should interpret all quantitative estimates with caution, as they derive from heterogeneous study designs.

- Decades Later: Recurrent Gastrointestinal Sequelae in a Patient With Remote Metastatic Osteosarcoma to the Stomach and Colon. [Case Reports]
- Osteosarcoma is a primary malignant bone tumor with a well-established tendency for pulmonary metastasis; however, gastrointestinal (GI) involvement is exceedingly rare. Intra-abdominal metastases may occur years to decades after the initial diagnosis. Hematogenous spread, following pulmonary metastasis, is the presumed mechanism. Due to delayed presentation and atypical manifestations, recogniti…

- Human colon tumor-on-a-chip based on magnetic microcontainers encapsulated cancer spheroids. [Journal Article]Biosens Bioelectron. 2027 Jan 01; 315:119287.BB
- Tumor-on-a-chip platforms are increasingly recognized as promising preclinical tools for developing personalized therapies. However, effectively recapitulating tumor heterogeneity, three-dimensional architecture, and the dynamic in vivo microenvironment remains a significant challenge. Here, we developed magneto-responsive microcontainers for controllable culture of the patient-derived colorectal…

- Traditional Uses, Phytochemistry, and Multi-Target Pharmacological Activities of Senna alexandrina. [Review]
- Senna alexandrina has been widely used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal, dermatological, metabolic, and musculoskeletal disorders. - Adult Onset Hirschsprung's Disease With Overlapping Presentation of Sigmoid Volvulus: Two Case Reports With Literature Review at Tikur Ambessa Specialized Hospital, AAU, Ethiopia. [Journal Article]
- Adult-onset Hirschsprung's disease (HSD) is uncommon and frequently leads to diagnostic difficulty after infancy. It is a congenital illness that causes intestinal obstruction due to a lack of ganglion cells. Approximately 1 in 5000 live newborns have this illness, and 95% of HSD cases are identified in infants. This case report will fill a knowledge gap at a low-resource setting where published …

- Managing infected wounds requires a delicate balance between rapid antimicrobial activity and continued tissue repair. To meet this challenge, we developed a porous carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/alginate hydrogel loaded with Silver nanoparticles and a Pistacia atlantica essential oil rich in α-pinene. The hydrogel displayed remarkable swelling (up to 6362% over 72 h) and changed the essential oil…
